(Well, really we can only swear up and down that one station has gotten it, but, come on.)

Thanks to HU reader Kevin for the tip and to HU reader Kevin’s DJ friend for the image.

UPDATE (6/22): Billy Corgan performs “The Celestials” and “One Diamond, One Heart” after being interviewed on KROQ-FM’s ‘Kevin and Bean Show.’

Earlier this week, I was fortunate to see the Smashing Pumpkins perform at Terminal 5 and it was truly a fantastic show. I plan on doing a write-up over the weekend, but I first wanted to share a couple of links, including a set of my photos and the fantastic live audience recording that HU contributor pzane made for NYCTaper.

Download the recording and stream both “Geek USA” and “Muzzle” here, and check out the photographs here!

And we’re saying they’ve had enough practice.

After almost ten months away from the stage, the band—and yes, it is the same band—will play for around 2,000 souls tonight at the Wiltern, an 80-year-old theatre found on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. We’re putting together a list of Twitter users who may be there, and we’ll have a post later tonight as things start happening.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ official Facebook page offered a sneak peek into the band’s archives tonight by posting a picture of an “about to be transferred” 4-track casette tape from the “Gish/Siamese era.”  According to the post, over 60 such tapes have already been transferred, presumably for the purpose of identifying material to be released over the next couple of years.

The tracklist on the tape, written in Billy Corgan’s distinctive handwriting, consists of… (more…)

The Mike Reina-fronted band takes a public stage for the first time tonight at the Echo in Los Angeles. Jimmy Chamberlin’s drums are there, as are some people with Twitter accounts.

L.A. music-news site The Scenestar reports that Skysaw will go on at 10pm PT, the second of four bands on the bill.

UPDATE: HU reader Seb uploaded two pictures, and below is a partial video of the band performing “Tightrope Situation.”

After a month away from the stage, the Smashing Pumpkins got back to it on Thursday in Argentina.  Some fan discussion of a radio stream of the concert can be found on the SmashingPumpkins.com message board. Fresh additions to the band’s setlist included “By Starlight,” “Heavy Metal Machine” (full mp3), and an electric take on “To Sheila” (partial video).

UPDATE: Here’s a video of “By Starlight.”

It figures that the big ‘news’ from an MTV-sponsored concert would be about the interruption of music, specifically “Disarm.” Many more pictures from the band’s Mexico City gig here.

This is the most obvious opportunity for a “provide your own caption” comments thread in HU history.  Go for it.

Photos from last Friday’s ceremony to induct Rush into the Hollywood Walk of Fame are now up on Daylife.com, courtesy Reuters. Billy Corgan was on hand to deliver a giddy introduction for the 2,412th star to line the Boulevard, and he humorously admits that “Cherub Rock” is torn straight from the pages of his Rush-addled youth.

Check out the video below and head on over to Daylife for more photos!

The Smashing Pumpkins producer (seated, left) tweeted this Kristin Burns-taken picture tonight, demystifying an earlier hint that he is working on a song this week with the pop star and novice boxer.

Billy Corgan (standing, back, center, holding guitar) looks on.

Last night Kerry Brown tweeted this picture of an instrument Billy Corgan is playing on the second song being recorded for Teargarden by Kaleidyscope:

Also, readers are telling me that multiple videos Brown has tweeted have more music from “Astral Planes” (the videos don’t play for me, for some reason), strongly suggesting that it and not “The Trip” will be the first song released. MonteLDS says that close examination of his Visalia concert video has revealed multiple fangirl licks of Dave Navarro’s hand, which may explain some of the confusion. :P”

Above: A view that almost no one had (photo by Jason Simpson; many more here)

How small is the Muddy Waters coffeehouse?  I took this picture standing about three feet from one wall, and there are what, 3-4 people between me and the counter against the other wall?  During the somewhat-quiet first part of the show, while Billy Corgan’s acoustic guitar was leading Spirits in the Sky, I had to suppress a few giggles over what was going to transpire once the electric guitars would be brought on and the stomping riff of “The Trip” would kick in.  They’re going to bring the rock into THIS place?  Are the walls going to come down?!

And, uhm, more or less, thankfully sans falling plaster.  This was a hot, packed in, raucous, FUN show, and every bit the kind of hard-to-convey-in-words, I-was-there experience you expect to stay with you for a long time. A few details (beyond the irrelevant setlist) worth sharing: It was nigh impossible for most people there to see anything, as the ‘stage’ level was even with or a few inches lower than where the crowd stood; I was maybe 15 feet back and the only thing I could see consistently was Billy’s head, with occasional glimpses of Dave Navarro’s Misfits t-shirt and guitar. The outdoors (probably 30 degrees cooler than inside) served as backstage during an intermission and afterwards, when band members kindly chatted away with most anyone and everyone (hi Mike!). And there will be 60 lucky people at a bookstore in Long Beach tonight!

Though it’s still early in California, there are plenty of photos up already of last night’s show at Muddy Waters.  At left, we have a shot from Carl Pocket, who got up close and personal with Billy Corgan and Spirits in the Sky in his photostream.

Flickr user Infincible brings us some great shots too, both in color and black and white.  Below, Linda Strawberry and Billy Corgan jam it out to a packed house.

UPDATE: Hat tip to @GermanPumpkins for this link to the Flickr stream of RobCardenaz and another set of 41 photos from the show!

If my 1,300-word liveblog last night wasn’t enough for you, a few readers have tipped us off to the local Fresno-based news coverage of the Billy Corgan / Spirits in the Sky gig last night on ABC 30’s “Action News.”  Check out the footage here, including a brief interview with Corgan, the show promoter, and several excited fans.

The local Visalia Times-Delta paper also pulled through for us again with a show wrap-up (despite mistakenly calling Corgan the “former Smashing Pumpkins frontman”) and a very nice gallery of photos from the event from photographer Ron Holman.

The Santa Barbara Independent is already promoting tonight’s show, four hours to the south — and can you blame them?

Me, well, I’m still giggling about the shout-out we got here at HipstersUnited.com from Dave Navarro himself on last night’s 103.1 show.  Podcast evidence forthcoming.

UPDATE: Billy Corgan wrote into SP.com with a few thoughts about last night’s show, including a story about Dave Navarro getting licked by one excited woman DURING A GUITAR SOLO.  Hilarious.

UPDATE, pt2: For those of you asking for last night’s setlist, check it out here.  It appeared in the comments late last night, but was pretty quickly buried.

photo-line.jpgWell, folks, it’s time for the highly-anticipated Billy Corgan and Spirits in the Sky tour to begin.  I’ve just been informed by HU blogger Jason that we’re about a half hour out from the show’s start at 9pm PST.  He and HU reader Sebastian sent the photo at right of the growing line outside.

As some of you have been gathering from the pre-show Twitter feeds, the band was in soundcheck earlier rehearsing plenty of new material, and it really is true (pinch me?!) that stripey-socked Dave Navarro is playing with them tonight.  I’m gonna have to get used to that one for the week.

Purple-dyed Linda Strawberry, longtime friend and drummer Kerry Brown, new-kid-on-the-block Mike Byrne, bassist Mark Tulin, and I’m assuming violinist Ysanne Spevack and flautist Kevin Dippold (does that add up to nine?) are in tow.  Okay, I missed keyboardist Mark Weitz. (Phew.)

photo2.jpgJason and Seb have already started to send me updates, so let me catch up with my 20 new emails and commence the liveblog:

8:51pm PST – Show should start in about ten minutes. Apparently they let the tapers in early to set up their varying equipment.  Picture from inside the venue here.

9:05pm PST – Awaiting first word from inside the venue, but just noticed that Dave Navarro will be calling in tonight to a radio show to give a recap of the Spirits in the Sky gig.  Tweet here.

9:06pm PST – Here are the details about that upcoming radio show: Dark Matter with Todd Newman on indie1031.com 10pm-12am PST. Call in at 877-900-1031.

9:07pm PST – First word from Jason.  They’re playing a cover of The Seeds – “Can’t Seem to Make You Mine.”  Check out the video below [via Sky Sunlight Saxon].

The Billy Corgan-led band Spirits in the Sky warmed up for their tour tonight at a private party somewhere in the Los Angeles area.  Dave Navarro and other Spirits associates have tweeted some low-quality pictures from the scene.

Below: It’s blurry, but do I see “Superchrist” violinist Ysanne Spevack in the background?

UPDATE: Yes, I do.

UPDATE: And it’s Kevin Dippold on the flute.
