That truly is the question. Billy keeps touting how there hasn't been this much excitement and buzz from outsiders that have heard the new music since MCIS. If that is the case, should we been expecting a song that will satiate the fan base AND deliver the goods as a crossover hit to the mainstream a la '1979'? I'm not asking if we will get a song that SOUNDS like that one. I'm just saying if the rest of the album is 'pretty good' to 'OK' (which I more or less agree that is pretty much what the ones we've heard live have been) then it does no good to compare it in any way to the older albums. So far the only song that has the potential to be a small hit in my opinion is 'My Love is Winter' and I can't see that one even eclipsing a song like 'That's the Way (My Love Is) in popularity (what little it had mainstream-wise), let alone 'Disarm' or '1979'.
I'm sure there will be great songs on the album. I'm just not so certain anyone will give a damn. Present company excluded. That's why it's a bit frustrating that WE have to wait while they prep it for release for the people who won't care. Oh myyyyyy.
Like I said, I hope I'm wrong. I WANT to be wrong.

I concur....

Looking at the Oceania tracklisting, there are, what, 8 songs we haven't heard performed yet? (I'm not totally clear on whether it has 13 or 14 tracks, seems like there was some confusion about that). I guess we're kinda holding our breath in regard to what the quality level of the remaining songs will be. I can't help but wonder if (some of) the album's "gems" are being completely held off as a surprise....or if the strongest songs are the ones that BC already elected to play live for that recent tour.

My opinion of the songs we've heard so far is that they range from "pretty good" to "OK"...I haven't heard anything I totally hate, and I also haven't heard anything that completely blows me away...a few of them I feel are much stronger than the other stuff that's come out since around ~2009. Certainly the studio versions will sound different. I guess the real suspense here is wondering if there are any fireworks/big guns that will be SP classics, on the album.

1. Quasar
2. Stella P and the People Mover
3. Panopticon
4. The Celestials
5. Violet Rays
6. My Love is Winter
7. One Diamond, One Heart
8. Pinwheels
9. Oceania
10. Pale Horse
11. The Chimera
12. Glissandra
13. Inkless
14. Wildflower

I'm looking forward to the new album as much as anyone and I have high hopes as to the quality of it. I cannot wait to hear it/hold it in my hands. That said (and I hate saying this, I do not have high hopes in terms of the Pumpkins ever being at all culturally relevant again. This album being delayed so they can get their major label ducks in a row is such backwards thinking. TbK has barely made an impact on non-fans and it has, up until this point, been FREE. How they believe the major label push will help is beyond me. It really worked out well for them with Zeitgeist, eh?? The fans bought it (some multiple times) mostly out of loyalty. The gen pop mocked it for being a cash-in. Not saying I agree with that, I don't, but it's hard to argue the point reasonably to the uninitiated.
I hope to eat my words here in a few months time, but it's hard to accept at this point that this delay will pay out for them much more than having released it in the same manner as the rest of the album (free w lmt ed packages of the album for those interested).

@stanley It'd be even more of a drawn out process the more successful they thought it could be.

At this point though I'm wondering if maybe they are going to release it independently after all? If a release date is "imminent"--which I take to mean the announcement of said date, not the date itself, which will likely be no earlier than May-- you'd think we would have heard about them signing a deal.

The whole thing is baffling in any case because what we've heard of the songs and the nature of the album, it certainly doesn't sound like the kind of music that is going to sell boatloads.

I guess if it gets the band back in the good graces of critics that could lead to sales from those who require a seal of approval on their music...
