Billy certainly is a little older and has put on a couple pounds.

I gotta say that I am very confused about what Billy means by saying that he only sees the current incarnation of the Smashing Pumpkins lasting another 4-5 years and then he wants to “morph the intention” or whatever. I can’t really conceive of what he would even do. Just have a Smashing Pumpkins television show or something?

Anyone have any ideas what he means by this? He’s brought it up several times now. I know in one interview he talked about him just writing songs and having other people tour on the songs.

Cool interview.

@Susan, I wouldn’t look too much into it. I bet it’s more like a way to keep himself motivated or something.

My guess is it’s a defense mechanism. He’s used to relationships (band, personal, romantic, familial) not working out and, even though he hopes his relationship with the current band keeps on as it is, he is keenly aware that all things change (*wink*) and is setting himself up for that change, if and when it happens. That or it would be some sort of media change, like an experiment in the way the music is released a la TbK. Knowing Billy though… it’s anybody’s guess and they’re prolly all wrong.

4-5 yrs from now Billy uploads all Smashing Pumpkins data to Skynet, hits “Make Cyborg Pumpkin Superband” and off he goes, inadvertently starting the war against the machines!

I dunno, really. It sounds like the same old philosophy he’s always had with the band. One album sounds like this. The next album sounds nothing like that. The album after that? Ah fuck it, let’s throw them a bone but really do something completely different, too.

At least that’s what I hope he means. I really hope he doesn’t mean it becomes a wrestling tag-team where the ideas of Billy Corgan are translated to characters that just happen to wrestle other dudes in their skivvies.

That would be fucking weird.

The comment in regards to an iteration of the band without him as a prominent member was brought up in the context of the conversation, like “What does Smashing Pumpkins mean? Could there be a future where I just pen songs and other people record them and go on tour?” He also mentioned the same thing a few years back where he said that he saw a possible future where he just composed music and other people recorded it in studio (like the Monkees I believe was the context of the conversation, but don’t quote me). Personally, this isn’t something I see as amounting to much. Remember a few years ago when he said it was “time to put the ghost of Billy to rest” and become William Patrick Corgan? Moreover, when the interviewer pushes the comment, Billy begins to discuss his public image. So it may have something to do with that? The actual presentation of the band? Who knows.

sounds like a massive pile of bullshite to me..

just concentrate on making music perhaps? if he dunt want the band in 5 years jus sack it off

9. BitterT - 8:33 am // Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Maybe the band morphs into something where they play music from Zwan and billy solo material as well as new music and old SP tunes

10. Steven - 11:07 am // Tuesday, September 11, 2012

I don’t think Billy even knows what will be in 5 years. I would guess he’s just frustrated with how some things are now and he’s trying to figure out how to make those things better. The result of which would be some kind of change, but he can’t really know what that is this far out. Things are moving so fast – there’s no way anyone can really predict what the landscape will look like so far in advance, and so how do you predict how you’ll react to that landscape?

i think @BiiterT might be right. he mentioned it a while ago, a band/show performing just song he has written regardless of what band/ project released them back in the day. it would be kind of cool, but i think on the other hand that since 2007 he fought so hard to establish the idientity of smashing pumpkins as a band and have the right to call whatever his up to nowadays that name, he should stick to his guns. i just dont imagine another farewell show and William Patrick Corgan and His Band kicking off next year.

why did you wink?

13. Eric B - 7:09 pm // Tuesday, September 11, 2012

I think Billy Corgan should keep the Smashing Pumpkins name and release a three cd set based on the Machina mystery. Maybe with three cds he could go into more detail and tell the rest of the story. Don’t do the whole cover band on tour thing Queen already did that he should def do something he’s never done before.

14. gsmamz - 8:41 pm // Tuesday, September 11, 2012

What’s a CD?

15. Eric B - 9:55 pm // Tuesday, September 11, 2012

What’s a cd? I’ll tell you what a cd is Its one of those round thingys that has like a pic on one side and its really shiny and stuff on the other. The Aliens gave us the tech to make em for real dude.

16. gsmamz - 12:53 am // Wednesday, September 12, 2012

I have a friend who knows someone who has a “CD burner” on their computer. They were saying that they can make their own CDs with it, like they can make a copy of one and it sounds exactly like the original

17. Kiernana - 10:08 am // Wednesday, September 12, 2012

The wink was an allusion to the intentionally bad pun I made directly preceding it.
