The Smashing Pumpkins have expanded their North American tour in support of Oceania to a second country with the addition of six shows in Canada during the month of October. Tickets are already on sale for two shows in Mexico on September 22 and 23. There is a week-long gap between the second Mexican date and the start of the Canadian shows on October 2 in Winnipeg. The Pumpkins will follow the Winnipeg gig with shows in Calgary on the 4th, Edmonton on the 5th, and Vancouver on the 7th. After Vancouver, there is a gap of over two weeks before the band hits Toronto on the 25th of October and Montreal on the 28th. We are still awaiting U.S. tour dates that will presumably fill in some of the gaps between current bookings; the rumored Halloween show in Brooklyn would slot in nicely after Montreal.

According to today’s Winnipeg Free Press, the band intends to sell VIP passes to the show, “which may include a premium ticket, a three-song backstage performance and interview session with the band, an autographed tour poster, a copy of Oceania and some special merch.” Details of the VIP passes are supposed to be available at SmashingPumpkins.com, but as yet I don’t see this information posted.

These dates comprise the band’s first visit to Canada since 2008, and the first stops in Winnipeg, Calgary, and Edmonton since the reformation of the band. In order to accommodate the band’s complex Oceania stage show, they are visiting large venues, primarily NHL hockey arenas. For all the details of the tour, check out SPFC.org

Tickets for the first five Canadian shows go on sale Friday at 10am at Ticketmaster.ca, with a presale promised tomorrow at 10am. The Montreal show will be vended via Evenko.ca.

where would one find these vip passes you mention

3. shaniqua - 1:35 pm // Monday, August 20, 2012

these venue choices are ridiculous. enjoy 3/5 empty hockey arenas, bill & co!

4. Is he one? - 1:39 pm // Monday, August 20, 2012

There is a way to set the Bell Center up as a theater. Like 7000-8000 persons. It will be perfect that way with the visual and all.

5. kurtis lando - 1:58 pm // Monday, August 20, 2012

i’d prefer a 3/5 fill arenas. that way i don’t have any drunk sweaty knobs rubbing against yelling wooo play bullet! over and over and over.

6. Lel - 2:03 pm // Monday, August 20, 2012

Wow, these are the same venues that Justin Bieber plays. Pretty ambitious. Hopefully, they’ll do a good job of promoting this and not end up having to cancel any dates.

7. dustrock - 2:28 pm // Monday, August 20, 2012

yeah, SP at Rexall in 1996 was incredible and sold out….now? It will be weird.

I’m kinda debating getting a VIP pass depending on the cost but I’ll probably just see if I can get decent floor tickets. Even if Jimmy was still in the band I’d be more excited to do the backstage, meet-the-band thing. Now I’m wondering whether or not I actually would want to meet Billy in person. :)

8. dustrock - 2:33 pm // Monday, August 20, 2012

Wow, tickets are $65-$95? I think this is more expensive than Pearl Jam was and that show was sold out.

9. skullivan - 8:18 pm // Monday, August 20, 2012

The Barclay Center where they’re rumored to be playing in Brooklyn has essentially the same capacity as Madison Square Garden. Bieber’s playing there 2 weeks later…

10. Matt - 11:48 pm // Monday, August 20, 2012

why does everyone know so much about where and when Justin Bieber is playing?

11. skullivan - 11:21 am // Tuesday, August 21, 2012

@Matt Because he is the future of music.

12. jim - 11:47 am // Tuesday, August 21, 2012

20. Is he one? - 10:09 am // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

The configuration for the Bell Center seems totally realistic! It should welcome 6000 to 8000 persons, which is really fine.

Just got my floor tickets, 59$ each. Very reasonnable. I am so thrilled!!!!!

Hell yes!!!!

21. danny fitzburg - 10:31 am // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

whatever happened to corgan’s tea shack? remember when that was the only reportable sp news on hu.

22. Kiernana - 10:59 am // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Yikes, $65-95? It just got a bit harder for me to see them with any of my friends, who aren’t all THAT into the band.

23. 17 - 11:01 am // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

@Is he one : 59$ + 19 $ … still a very decent price. Is it your first time seeing the pumpkins in mtl?

24. Is he one? - 12:01 pm // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

@17 no, third time in Montréal, twice in 2000 and once in 2007. The price is totally reasonnable IMO.

I hope they keep playing XYU until then! :)

25. EW - 1:11 pm // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Can anybody confirm if open taping/LMA uploads will be allowed for the VIP performances?

26. susan - 2:19 pm // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

@EW

I just asked @SmashingPumpkin about it.

27. axelease - 3:58 pm // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Anyone know anything about an opening band for the Canadian dates? Will there be one, and if so, who? I don’t really care so much, just trying to figure out when SP might realistically take the stage, as unfortunately I’m going to have to arrive a little bit late for the show (Toronto).

28. susan - 4:00 pm // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

According to the Crestfallen webmaster, in a post at the Smashing Pumpkins oboard, it hasn’t been determined if there will be open taping allowed at the VIP performances.

29. Just_Erick - 7:57 pm // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Susan, if history has showed us, taping will most likely not be allowed but somehow someone will sneak it in.

If there are VIP tickets available for the New York show (rumored) then I will for sure go considering I am moving from California to New Jersey in two weeks. It seems fitting to splurge on my new home–the east coat.

30. susan - 8:54 pm // Wednesday, August 22, 2012

@Just_Erick

I tend to agree with you. Particularly if they are going to debut any kind of new music, as they did with the public soundchecks in 2010, I would guess they would not allow recording. But maybe they won’t do new songs. We’ll see.

31. EW (Rip van Winkle of the In-tar-webs) - 12:39 am // Thursday, August 23, 2012

@susan: thanks for asking the right folks :> (and wow, the o-board still exists?!)

@Just_Erick: yeah, I’m hoping the 2010 soundcheck situation can be avoided.
This time around, folks are paying money (a lot, even) for the extra performance, so I’m hoping they’ll be allowed to record this experience.

32. NotMonteLDS - 6:34 am // Thursday, August 23, 2012

NEVER HAS TO DO WITH HU

33. Joe@joe.com - 6:39 am // Thursday, August 23, 2012

“hey wanna hear me play 3 songs in a pissed off mood? 400 dollars please.”

now THATS fucking selling out.

34. ford - 8:05 am // Thursday, August 23, 2012

not sure about the other venues, but the acc (toronto) tends to be against taping.
