Posted by jjb in news, pisces iscariot, releases.
trackback

The reissued Pisces Iscariot is on sale today, and its liner notes purport to resolve definitively such often-asked minor questions as “What is the first word of the first song on this album?” and “Who is pictured on the cover?” Excitement abounds; feel free to share yours in the comments.

amazing picture!! our readers are the best. <3

2. snowy - 11:58 am // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Haven’t gotten mine yet, but some people seem to be saying the vocals on “Plume” were re-recorded, with different lyrics. Any truth to this?

3. CdT - 11:58 am // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Anyone else from Canada get their pre-order in early and their copy hasn’t arrived yet? :( :(

4. geranisbesterGeran - 12:16 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Plume is a different mix and vocal take.

5. silvermayo - 12:20 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Really stunned by the Remix of Glynis. Shocking changes throughout. Not sure if I like it as much as the original, but 2 versions vs 1 never hurts. :)

6. strangewind - 1:00 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

SP fans scare me

7. axelease - 1:01 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

@CdT got mine here in Canada today. Ordered a few weeks ago via Amazon though, not SP site. I’d be happy to support the SP site, but $49 for the box set is a bit much when Amazon.ca is only asking $28. I’m super impressed that Amazon delivered on release date!

Box set looks great. I can’t wait to spend some time pouring over its contents. Looks great alongside the SD and Gish boxes. Also makes me excited for MCIS and the rest of the reissues.

8. axelease - 1:06 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Re smell, my copy has the fragrance of new leather shoes, much like the Gish and SD boxes.

9. James Alexander - 1:07 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Has anyone who pre-ordered it through the sp website received their copy yet?

10. Frank O - 1:07 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

It was so cool to see the original demo tape on the dvd. it was really red! how cool! The dvd is freaking great and it makes you feel like you knew the band way back when. Its interesting to see their progression from 1988, then through the rest of the box set dvds. and especially to present.

11. Spumkins33 - 1:13 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I ordered mine through SP.com/Top Spin last week. On release day, I don’t have it :(

That, kind of sucks.

12. chris - 1:20 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I probably won’t have a chance to pick one up until tomorrow at the earliest, so I must live vicariously through you all. Is Venus in Furs from 3/16/89? What else is really unexpected besides Glynis?

13. Joe@joe.com - 1:21 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Plume is a different vocal take – which is cool, but it isn’t labelled as such, which i kind of dislike. Nitpicking I guess.

This really is a great release, between the bside disc (to a bside disc) and the live DVD. Some of it is so obscure (heh) that I honestly doubt I’ll listen to it again. That being said, it very much lives up to expectations and desires for this era of SP

14. Justin - 2:07 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

This is confusing. Is there 3 released versions of Plume now?

The original PI 1993 version, the Gish deluxe version featured the 2011 mix of Plume, and now we have an alternate vocal take / remaster PI 2012 version.

I haven’t given it too close a listen, but is the PI ’93 / ’12 version of Starla the same, or is the PI ’12 Starla the same as the Gish 2011 mix?

15. JCelsius - 2:07 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Has anywhere said where the vocals for this version of Plume come from?

16. susan - 2:17 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Shopping tip for anyone that may be heading out after work, Best Buy appears not to have this in stock – we couldn’t find it at our local Best Buy and others are reporting the same on the oboard. However, our local record store had it in stock! XD

17. Darren page - 2:21 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Absolutely love PI but this remaster (disc 1) is a little disappointing in sound quality only. Frail has audible clicks at the start, Plume is a different mix, Pissant sounds very “digital” and Blue has some sort of glitch near the end. I love the album but I think I prefer the original mastering. Beautiful boxset though.

18. JSouth - 2:21 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I pre-ordered the Box Set and the Vinyl on the last day of pre-orders, and for some reason I got it last Friday. Today I just got an email that the box set is available for the cd box set, but when I downloaded it, there was just the mix tape.

Anyways, box set is awesome, and the vinyl is absolutely amazing.

You know what’s going to be interesting to see is when MCIS get’s re-released how much resale value is going to take a hit. I really hope they keep the same track-order as the original.

19. apm - 2:39 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Can someone who has it explain the story behind has those repeated My Eternity and Jennifer Ever takes on the DVD?

20. Glen - 2:43 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I got mine on Saturday the 14th. Beautiful boxset, loving Blissed and the 2012 Glynis – but I didn’t get the digital download of the demo tape. Did everyone else?

21. DArren page - 2:47 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I take it back about Frail and Bedazzled – the original also has those audio clicks at the start

22. offthebeatentrailpdx - 2:51 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

The repeated takes of the songs are because they screwed up every take before they complete the songs. They weren’t that tight in those days it seemed.
The box set rules. I think it’s funny they used a different take (sounds like a scratch vocal) for “Glynis”. Either Billy is somewhat embarrassed by the original vocal (with its falsetto…) or he used a different take to avoid some sort of royalty / rights issue with Arista, who put out No Alternative.
I got all my stuff early and the download worked just fine.

23. merp - 3:08 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Got a copy of the LP and the Deluxe CD/DVD at Grimey’s in Nashville. They had them for really great prices. Only $19 for the LP and $37 for the Deluxe. Suck it Amazon/Top Spin! :P

Is is just me, or does James sound like Fred Schneider on the live version of “She” on the cassette demo?

24. Soltmen - 3:09 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

received my box set and vinyl on Friday 13th, yes, that’s Friday the 13th. for the sticklers on dates. Ordered through SP

25. dave - 3:33 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

do the liner notes make any mention of the alien face on the cover? (if you put the cover next to a mirror with the top side against the mirror you see the stereotypical ‘alien’ head. Or the band photo that when held up to the light only shows billy in a spotlight?

26. apm - 3:52 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

A “bug” in the Digital Download, A Girl Named Sandoz doesn’t have a number in front of it, which messes up the sorting. :)

Yes, James’ “vocals” are rather funny on She. Fred Schneider’s not far off, though I’m sure James didn’t think so at the time. Youthful exuberance.

27. CdT - 3:55 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I wonder how much money the ex-Pumpkins are making from the reissues. I’d imagine Iha gets some kind of writing royalty for ‘Blew Away’, but are the others making anything at all?

28. werideatdusk - 4:30 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

amazon still hasnt shipped mine… just cancelled my order, going to the mom-and-pop record store to get it. woo hoo accidental goodness

29. Phillip - 4:40 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I preordered the box set from sp.com and received it early on the 12th. I also reordered the vinyl in a separate packaged still have not got it.

30. axelease - 4:59 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Curious to know from those who buy the vinyl if the record is transparent orange/yellow like the original?

31. M&M - 5:12 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Amazon a no go for today, here’s hoping for tomorrow!

32. Spumkins33 - 5:48 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Glynis vocals don’t sound different. We are missing the “Hello” at the beginning, though :(

I ordered the vinyl and didn’t get it. I imagine it’s black – which is the pictures I saw from the preorder, but that may have just been stock “record”. I don’t think you can have 180g transparent vinyl…

I REALLY hope SP does more colored vinyl, though. I finally completed my Siamese Singles (w/ box!) today.

33. Kiernana - 6:15 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Can’t wait to get…and smell… mine.

34. Halo - 6:27 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Fucking Amazon didn’t ship out my copy yet. So, what is the first word of the first song on this album? Is it hungry or hold me? And who is pictured on the cover?

35. The Great Pumpkin - 6:32 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

I always thought the picture on the cover was an out-of-focus picture of James.

36. Just_Erick - 6:40 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

No one has it on my end. Not my mom and pops nor Bestbuy… Rasputin is my final hope :(

37. SPForever247 - 6:47 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

@Glen I was able to download the 6 songs that were on the cassette today since I pre-ordered through SP.com. I played them for my husband today and he didn’t believe me when I told him that was BC singing ;)

After being disappointed that I had to wait 2 weeks for my Gish and Siamese Dream reissues last time around even with a pre-order, I decided to give SP.com and TopSpin one more chance to get my pre-order to me on time. Got it in the mail today! Just started going through everything, very excited!

38. colquittbrett - 6:51 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Yeah! Me too! Always thought it was Billy, actually. But no! It’s the wifey. Crazy revelation after such a span of time. I love liner notes!

I’m beginning to wonder if something got confused with Plume. It seems like this alternate version was meant for the Gish reissue and got switched at birth. Or something. Brain is fried after driving to two separate Best Buys and not finding it. Finally found it at FYE. I have never in my many years thought I would be thankful for FYE, but alas, here we are.

Probably won’t watch the DVD for a good while, but I really dig the bonus disc. Another version of Jesus Loves His Babies? TWO! TWO! Cinder Open is kinda gorgeous. I haven’t gotten all the way through it yet. Stopped at Blissed. I still can’t believe I didn’t skip straight away to Purr Snickety just to see if it sounds better. By June sounds lovely. Still weird to see that as By June and not BYE June. I don’t even know if that’s the way it’s always been or not. But it’s always been that way in my head.

39. shaniqua - 7:50 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

pi model is almost as hot as the sd one. almost

40. James Alexander - 7:58 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Kind of disapointed I didn’t get mine today. Ordered Gish and SD from the sp.com website weeks before they came out and I was one of the people that didn’t receive their copies for well over a week after release. Figured i’d give sp.com one more chance to support the band and pre order through them. Placed my order on July 4th and didn’t receive my copy early like some people, didn’t even receive it on release date. Hell, my tracking still shows it sitting in kentucky for the past 2 days.

I pre-ordered the PI vinyl from bestbuy and that looks like it will be delivered tomorow (18th).

41. dan angell - 8:00 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

spare a thought 4 me – i still don’t have my flipping Oceania bundle yet. amateurs.
the Pisces set looks great though – i will probably get it at some point

42. susan - 8:10 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Billy says in the liner notes that it’s his ex-wife on the cover.

43. colquittbrett - 9:54 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Also, don’t know if this is news or not, but it was to me.

Pissant – “for those keeping score the drums were recorded through the mayo guitar pickup run through a big muff”

THAT IS KINDA AWESOME.

44. Johnny - 9:56 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Hungry, hold me, harm me? Thoughts? I actually always thought it was “hug me”. Money on hungry though.

45. M&M - 10:29 pm // Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Order placed on amazon.com July 6th. Delivery Estimate: Monday July 23, 2012 – Friday July 27, 2012 :’( Next time I’ll use TopSpin…

46. Randelius - 12:00 am // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Didn’t get mine yet >:( I did d/l the thing through elicit means though just to hear it.

I’m really happy with the disc 2- although not sure how I feel about a different vocal take on Plume ending up on my vinyl. I’ll withhold judgment until I actually confirm that when the vinyl arrives, but that’s one of my favorite tracks and-while I love hearing alternate takes- I’d like the good version to be the definitive version on the vinyl- not some obscure novelty.

@spumkins33 WTF do you mean you don’t hear a change in Glynis?? ^^ It’s a completely different vocal take altogether, with some screaming at the end instead of the falsetto run, along with very whispery compressed vocals throughout the verses.

47. AdamDanger - 9:25 am // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

For those that ordered the box through Amazon, I think they srewed up something on the original listing. I got notice that mine wouldn’t ship until August 16. Since the “new” lisitng shows in-stock, I canceled my original order and re-placed it. It shipped last night.

48. jjb - 11:32 am // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

There’s a lot more different about Glynis than just the vocal track.

49. Gurou-Kun - 11:43 am // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

So, ’bout my question from the Pisces Reissue PR post (july 2); those lucky enough to have a copy, what’s the name of the second CD?

50. jcoriha - 12:08 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

I just listened to “Glynis” on the iTunes clip. Sounds like they didn’t try to recreate putting the whole mix through the Electro Harmonix Bass Balls effects pedal like they did on the original. It sounded like they manually changed the settings on the filter as the song played (Greenwood did a similar thing on his guitar solo to “Paranoid Android” through a different filter a couple years later) so getting it exactly the same would be impossible anyway.

51. Johnny - 12:50 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

What I ordered: A Pisces Box Set with Tee Shirt bundle
What I got: Two Pisces Box sets, two Tee Shirts, and one vinyl copy of Siamese Dream. I feel kinda bad, and kinda good.

52. Joe - 1:14 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Cd 2 doesn’t have a title, which caused some headache for iTunes. It’s just listed as Pisces Iscarilt [deluxe edition] ( something like that.

It’s confirmed in liner botthat the cover picture is of
Bolly’s ex wife.

I believe the lyric is “hungry”, but I don’t have the liner notes in front of me. It is listed, however.

Any other questions?

53. Joe - 1:14 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

My iPhone had a kinipshit, but I think you got what I was saying

54. colquittbrett - 4:50 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

I always thought the lyrics to Frail and Bedazzled were different. Mind blown.

55. Jonk - 6:22 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Is this worth getting? It seems a tad on the obscure side. That being said, it would be rad to purchase something that had a cassette tape. Kudos to Billy, Smashing Pumpkins and EMI

56. Acknowledge - 6:33 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Amazon.ca has it for $15 – 2cd, dvd AND tape. :O

57. ptr - 6:38 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

anyone know why the ‘hello kitty kat’ performance is from a second stage performance? they were the headliner of the festival that year, weren’t they?

58. Eric B - 7:42 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

After reading all of the posts I can’t wait to get mine. The Pumpkins have the best reissues I have ever seen.

59. dan - 9:29 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

A lot of people on the O-board and Netphoria have found numerous problems with this reissue.

1. Only 24/44.1 files are available to buy at the moment, even though TopSpin advertised 24/96 high fidelity files while people were ordering the pre-order.
2. There appears to be a different pitch and speed with “Frail & Bedazzled” that’s different than the original.
3. There are audio hiccups and glitches in “Pissant” (0:03), “Blue” (3:08), “Jackie Blue” (1:25) and “Why Am I So Tired” (near the end of the song somewhere).
4. “Plume” has a new vocal mix, but that’s already been mentioned here.
5. The bonus disk has been brickwalled, with a lot of clipping in most, if not all, of the songs.
6. There appears to be a transition error with “French Movie Theme” and “Purr Snickety.” Purr starts too early at the end of French, so the beginning of Purr is actually cut off if you’re listening to just that song.
7. There’s also apparently some issues with the digital downloads of the cassette tracks. Nothing And Everything, Sun (Remix) and She (Live) are not cut correctly.

I’ve already bought a copy of the deluxe reissue. I think the best part about it is the packaging and the DVD.

60. Stacy C. - 10:49 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Is there anyone who is just really enjoying reliving all the memories of back in the day when these tracks were all bootlegs and we were all talking about them constantly?

61. Stacy C. - 10:55 pm // Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Oh, and I’m loving “My Dahlia” and “There It Goes” on the bonus disc.

62. sfckl - 1:10 am // Thursday, July 19, 2012

I pre-ordered weeks ago and am still waiting! I could just go to the store and buy it. Weak

63. PartyHard - 9:03 am // Thursday, July 19, 2012

It’s $25 US Dollars thru Amazon.ca, but it will take a long while to get it.

64. axelease - 9:41 am // Thursday, July 19, 2012

I was about to mention that the box set is $14.99 at Amazon.ca, but I see that someone else already posted about it. I already thought that their pre-order price of $28 was great compared to SP.com charging $49, but $14.99 is a total steal. Thanks to the pre-order price guarantee they are only charging me $14.99. For those in Canada that haven’t found a copy yet, I recommend ordering through Amazon… and maybe it would be a good deal for those in the US as well if the shipping doesn’t add too much.

65. colquittbrett - 9:43 am // Thursday, July 19, 2012

I used to hate on pre-Gish material. I still kinda do. But this reissue has decidedly changed my perspective on that shit.

66. skullivan - 9:46 am // Thursday, July 19, 2012

@acknowledge Thanks for the heads up, just ordered one! There was no way I was paying $45+ for it so I’m excited they dropped the price.

67. axelease - 9:47 am // Thursday, July 19, 2012

I agree with you colquittbrett. I never had much love for the pre-Gish material, but this collection is awesome and has given me a new appreciation. It’s my favourite of the resissues so far.

68. Snakester - 9:54 am // Thursday, July 19, 2012

I bought through amazon.ca. Total came to $25 US, so I am okay with that. It will take awhile to get here, which I am also okay with since I’m still soaking up the Gish and SD reissues and Oceania. This is a great time to be a fan.

69. werideatdusk - 10:09 am // Thursday, July 19, 2012

Just did the same. Was feeling unenthused since there are so many errors, but I think I will mostly be able to overlook them. I want to get lost in the music, not tally up split-second glitches.

70. Gurou-Kun - 12:31 pm // Thursday, July 19, 2012

Since the deluxe reissues are really expensive here where I live (only the regular version gets released, so they’re imported and sold twice as expensive), I decided to look for the mp3 files, and gotta say the hiccups are really noticeable and annoying; and the transition error is something really retarded.

It’s a real damn shame, ’cause I was looking forward to buying this as soon as I could, not minding the price; but the glitches, errors and hiccups are too much for me, so I’m gonna wait until there’s a Version 2.0, even if it’s only digital… then and only then I’ll buy this remaster.

71. PartyHard - 1:06 pm // Thursday, July 19, 2012

I bought it from Canada. They priced it appropriately.

72. Steven Adamson - 4:47 pm // Thursday, July 19, 2012

“There appears to be a transition error with “French Movie Theme” and “Purr Snickety.” Purr starts too early at the end of French, so the beginning of Purr is actually cut off if you’re listening to just that song.”

Just noticed that on my copy of the CD. I don’t have any of the other audio glitches on my copy though. “Frail & Bedazzled” sounds fine to me.

73. Hank - 4:50 pm // Thursday, July 19, 2012

Is the version of “Blissed” on Disc 2 the same version that is on the flexi-disc?

74. gsmamz - 5:51 pm // Thursday, July 19, 2012

I’m glad a lot of fans can have a positive attitude about all this & just “enjoy the music”. But I feel like there’s really no excuse for all these errors, especially in a grand re-issue/remaster release. Something like a re-issue/remaster implies that all this music has been gone over with a fine-tooth comb from start to finish, to create something really special…a “definitive” or “ultimate” version of the album.

The fans that say they won’t let “a few glitches” or transition errors ruin the music for them…well, good for them. In my opinion, that’s supporting mediocrity. Which, again, is fine, if only these re-issues hadn’t been marketed as something beyond that.

My hope is that Billy doesn’t read the legitimate complaints about a product people paid for, and write it off as them being unreasonable, or whiny, or entitled. There’s a big difference. The flaws in the Pisces re-issue are valid concerns. The way this release was marketed implies superior sound quality, and should have been nothing less.

75. reuxs - 12:08 am // Friday, July 20, 2012

Just got PI. It’s interesting. Music wise, disk 2 is quite the treasure trove. There it Goes sounds amazing. I also got the download of the Demo tape, which is great. They should just suck it up and release all of the Reel Time and Ignoffo sessions, would really like to hear “Stars Fall In” or “C’mon” or that alternate version of “East”, “Egg”, etc.

While I can fix the issue with “Purr Snickety” with a WAV editor, and while I can easily replace this inferior version of “Plume” with the one from the Gish remaster, I’m kind of disappointed with the sound quality of disk two. Disk 2 is quite loud compared to Disk 1. I wonder how much of Disk 2 is in error? Billy has been more careful about his music’s dynamics since the release of the Zeitgeist. I fixed the loudness a bit in my ears with mp3gain, but that won’t solve any clipping if there is some. Oh well.

I *am* disappointed a bit in “Glynis”. Not really because of the vocal mix or the change in bass dynamics, but the song is a sad one and the end with the screaming and laughing somewhat ruins the moment.

76. Spumkins33 - 9:30 am // Friday, July 20, 2012

Once again, SP fans thinking they can do a better job at being Billy Corgan than Billy can. Fuck, no wonder why he just assumes most of us are dicks.

You assholes better not ruin my MCIS reissue. Let’s hope Billy doesn’t read this crap or consider it in the slightest.

I can’t wait for Sixteen Stone to get a reissue, lolz. Actually Bush are coming to my town, and playing in a restaurant. It’s a nice restaurant and a really cool bar/eatery – but not somewhere a band like that, or Mr. Stefani should play.

77. Anth - 1:09 am // Saturday, July 21, 2012

@Spumkins33 I don’t see how anyone can view these as anything but legitimate complaints…these are premium-priced reissues that shouldn’t be subject to such careless mistakes. Not liking new mixes is one thing; clipping and track indexing problems are a reflection of awful quality control. Personally, I’m holding out for either an amended pressing or buying it used down the line.

I wonder if letting go of Kerry Brown has anything to do with the severe drop-off in quality?

78. Geran - 6:12 am // Saturday, July 21, 2012

Starla has an audio glitch too. 10:16ish, static in the left channel. So thats Pissant, Blue and Starla on the first disc at least, and Jackie Blue and Why Am I So Tired on the second disc. Fan****ingtastic.

79. Spumkins33 - 10:19 am // Saturday, July 21, 2012

Fair enough. Although for those new age kids, it does force them to listen to the record as sequenced all the way through!

BTW, I only have the vinyl of this re-issue. Anyone noticed the liner notes of the vinyl being different than the CD in regards to the liner notes? The Blew Away notes lead me to believe it was written relatively recently. But it’s in the same formatting as the CD liner notes (type writer, XXXX).

80. Dylan - 1:48 pm // Saturday, July 21, 2012

ptr – They played the 2nd stage throughout Lollapalooza 94 just for the hell of it. Often playing twice in one day

81. Hank - 9:59 am // Wednesday, August 1, 2012

I ask again: Is the version of “Blissed” on Disc 2 the same version that is on the flexi-disc?

Anyone?
