(Well, really we can only swear up and down that one station has gotten it, but, come on.)
Thanks to HU reader Kevin for the tip and to HU reader Kevin’s DJ friend for the image.
UPDATE (6/22): Billy Corgan performs “The Celestials” and “One Diamond, One Heart” after being interviewed on KROQ-FM’s ‘Kevin and Bean Show.’

Cool.
Ah poop, just realized it’s only the image from the CD tray. Seeing new artwork for singles used to be one of the fun things about a new album cycle…. alas.
I was really hoping this wouldn’t be the 1st single. I think this song is one of the weaker ones on this album. I think that it sounds very familiar and why many people gravitate towards it. Everyone talks about the “big” part in the middle of the song that brings clarity back to Pumpkin land, I know what part you’re talking about but “eh” I think there are better “it” parted on this record songs like Panopticon,Violet Rays, and Glissandra. I’ve wasn’t sold on the latter songs until recently they are phenominal in the car on a warm summer day with the windows down. The only thing I find redeeming on Celestials is that the bridge and the end of the song has a great hook but I just feel this song doesn’t have the sustaining power has many other tracks on this album.
Panopticon and Pinwheels are still my favourites on the album, but I think Inkless would make a really killer single.
The more I listen to Oceania, the more I love it. I only wish Lonely is the Name were on here too!!! Thematically and sonically it would be a great fit.
[irrational and inane complaint about a smashing pumpkins song that will be a single]
I think this is a great pick. Just got the CD tonight and this and Panopticon were the ones I listened to the most
To me The Chimera is the most obvious first single. Celestials is a decent choice though, nice mix of quiet and loud. Usually the first single is pretty much all heavy and the second is on the softer side so this one’s got it all.
Oh man I am really starting to warm up to the Chimera. I really like listening to that one, Glissandra and Inkless back to back to back
Not to sound cynical but I have been dreading this being the first Pumpkins single off Oceania. I mean, it was an obvious choice but I really think this is one of the weakest songs off the album.
I think Chris should give it a spin with his pool peeps.
@3 Listener’s Mullet
It’s a promo single, no need to worry about the art. Muzzle as a promo, was only a plain yellow cover with the words on it… if this is going to be a real single I bet they’ll make new art for it.
I think this would make a great single. The dynamics of the song (starting acoustic, building up to an electric climax) are pretty cool. And the chorus is super catchy, of course.
@Lel: It looks like rain today, but maybe this weekend I’ll bring my boom box to the pool and see if the chill bros there dig it :)
since the projected first week US sales are 45k-50k the band needs a stong single to push the sales to at least 70k
It’s funny. I have friends who either don’t like SP, or don’t think enough of them to acknowledge any album after SD – total music snobs, too. They love this record. I think the challenge is getting people to:
- Actually sitting down and listening to this album ALL the way through, as it were a new band. Give it some attention, that’s what you do with albums (in case you forgot)
- Forget about every other past Smashing Pumpkins album you’ve heard. This is probably the first SP album where significant contributions came from the bassist and second guitarist. You can hear that immediately – ESP those slinky bass lines. Completely new texture to BC’s songs…
- Don’t get so fixated on any member’s personalities outside of the music. It’s about the fucking music. If you’re so fixated on the celebrity, you’re part of the problem.
i would have gone with the chimera. to me that song has a siamese dream style of sound to it, and since most of the casual listeners tend to lean towards siamese dream it would have been a good choice as a single to bring people back to the band.
Great choice for a first single. This song is a real grower and has something for everyone. It also reflects the maturity of the album, which is crucial for bringing disenfranchised old school fans back into the fold, at least a bit. it’s got something for the XRT set and the Q101 set (chicagoans will get it).
Plus, “Never let the summer get you down” … its a perfect summer single and also sports arguably the catchiest chorus on the album.
Yeah, people might respond more raptly to “Inkless”, “Panopticon” or “The Chimera” but that’s because they’re so close to the old sound.
I’ve only had time to listen once to the album start to finish. Typically after the first play I always think the new albums are not as good as the previous. Then I continue to listen and hey, I have a new favorite SP record. Oceania really impresses me. Best ever ? probably not but a great record. I’m happy for the entire band. There were plenty of good choices for the first promo and Celestials will work.I also agree with Spumkins33
I’d have picked either panopticon or chimera for the lead single
I really really like Panopticon- I did think that would make a good single, but it feels like there is a more immediacy in the message to the Celestials. Kind of cool and crazy that there’s a lot of fans of the Chimera- that one confused me the most when I heard it, but now I can’t wait to see them in concert and cheesily along yell the part “I’m never gonna lose you”
Other than the blaring radio ad during both songs (don’t know what was up with that) those little acoustic versions were pretty good. I particularly liked the 1D1H acoustic.
chimera is shit
Haha I was like wth is JCelsius talking about, then I realized this blog entry has an update. Ugh this show is horrible, how far in is the interview/performance? I’m about four minutes in
oh you can move the little blue bar
got my copy of oceania i pre-ordered from Amazon today and put it in my car CD player. The player has a read out of song title/band name and on my particular copy of Oceania “Quasar” song title is “Stella P and the People Mover”. Has this happened to anyone else? I know that was once a working title just wondering if anyone else this happen with their CD.
@JCelsius
during? it cuts out all of the bloody song!!
@Jon Morgan That’s interesting, the CDText burned onto the actual disc must have the old title. It was originally “Quasar/Stella P…” on the early tracklistings though so it’s strange that it’s just listed as Stella P.
I would imagine any CD player capable of reading CDText off a disc would display the same.
@bob
I know! It played fine during their interview and the radio people’s stupid jibber jabber, but as soon as it plays the song it cuts out. It played a little more of 1D1H, and I was just commenting on the part I heard.
I gave up on that radio show. I tried to find it but the show pretty horrible. It was like that one episode on Parks and Recreation where they visit the local rock station.
On another note, wasn’t Quasar also at one time listed as “Samurai Mike”?
I have to say, after just listening to Oceania in full, the celestials is the definitely THE standout track. And worthy of a single. However, after I listened to machina 1 for the first time, I thought wound should be a stand out single. So what do I know?
@obscurefdstakrhb5binflight
Wound is great, was my favourite Machina tracks for ages, but Sacred + Profane should have been a single instead of Try Try Try
@Jonk Crazy Ira and The Douche!
Цой жив!!!
Am I the only one who thought Age of Innocence would have worked best as a single?
@colquittbrett: Better than Stand Inside Your Love? Yes, you’re the only one :P
