Glowing ball to transfix audiences for ‘Oceania’ tour 10:18 pm // Thursday, June 21, 2012

Back in May, an image of a giant white ball apparently created for the Smashing Pumpkins’ tour was uploaded to, and quickly removed from, Facebook. Now, Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan has tweeted an image of the ball, upon which it appears images will be projected as part of an overall visual experience for the Pumpkins’ Oceania tour. The Pumpkins are working with graphic artist Sean Evans to design visuals that will digitally map with the music of Oceania, which the band plans to play in full. Some segments of the visuals, featuring burlesque performers, seem to have been filmed in April.

That’s good, when I was listening to the album I was thinking that it really lacked in the giant glowing ball department.
Cool ball.
Band: So, Billy, can you tell us what sort of stage design plans you and the touring crew have sorted out?
Billy: Well, guys, this is an album that has some balls. I’ve decided our concerts need to have balls too. Also, our fans should be able to go home thinking to themselves, “I had a ball at that concert.” So, again, the key idea you need to take away from this is . . . balls.
Pro: The ball will be amazing.
Con: It was DJ Shadow’s idea (except he performed inside the ball).
I just realized 6 of the images in the album artwork have an orb or circular shape of some sort.
Primus used something similar to this years ago. They had 2 of them on the Tour Du Fromage, and 3 on the Hallucinogenic tour. They are very cool.
I can’t believe no one posted the obvious AC/DC quote. Allow me…
“But, we’ve got the biggest balls of them all!”
Images of giant white balls usually get removed from Facebook pretty quickly.
Stonehenge anyone?
^^ lol
The album cover is very phallic and now the Oceania tour is going to be all about balls. I’m no psychologist, but I’d say there’s something to this.
To Freud, every single thing could be watered down to a sexual repression.
