Several radio stations in Canada are spinning or sharing “The Celestials” and referring to it as Oceania‘s first single. UPDATE (6/14): Kathleen Danes of the Illinois-based Daily Herald speaks to Billy Corgan, reports that “he admits he’s been eyeing ‘The Celestials’ as a single.”

That is interesting – it didn’t really grab me like other songs did, but a whole ton of people here said they thought it was radio worthy.

2. MustardLies - 9:28 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

excellent choice, methinks!

3. Bounitful_Wastland - 9:31 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Yeah, it’s a solid choice, but I think there are a few other potential songs as well…

4. Johnny - 9:45 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

This is very cool. Heralds good things, that the Celestials is getting recognition without a push from the label. Is there some way that a rabid fan could take the high quality mp3 on the Sonic page and somehow put it on his or her iPod?

5. Jeremy Wilhide (@JeremyWilhide) - 9:46 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

I heard it on the way home from work on 98Rock in Baltimore MD. Suprised the hell out of me.

6. Kiernana - 9:49 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

If radio is playing it and referring to it as a single, it may be a sign of a push from the label. It may not, but it would be very philanthropic of radio to just do it on their own. And kinda weird for them to call it a single if it’s really just a track they want to play from the album.
Either way, it’s a great song and a good choice to show off the album. I’m not sure if I would have chosen it as a first single, but definitely *a* single.

7. jcoriha - 9:50 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

How is a frontpage link on iTunes for the free stream not a push from the label? Believe me, they don’t just randomly pick a band to promote like that.

8. Kiernana - 9:52 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Yeah, that too. lol

9. Gee - 9:58 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

They can do this without permission?

The Catch of the Day for 06/12/12

The Celestials- The Smashing Pumpkins

11. Kiernana - 10:05 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Radio stations can play whatever they want (like Billy’s favorite song, for instance! ;) as long as they pay their licensing fees.

12. xdf - 10:11 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

It is a pretty good song for the heartbroken teenagers of summer.

13. gsmamz - 10:12 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Not to make an invalid comparison, but I remember hearing Muzzle on the radio a lot around the time of MCIS (there’s even that semi-rare Muzzle promo CD) even though it wasn’t really a legit “single”.

14. Johnny - 10:14 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

@jcoriha I meant without a company being hired to push the single to radio, as is common practice for most of what we hear over the airwaves–especially for new music. G.L.O.W., Widow, and Freak were all pushed–I don’t think they had this same level of reaction, where the song was just being played, I have to assume, due to requests/positive cultural consensus.

15. Johnny - 10:18 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

@gsmamz, Muzzle was a promo single, which means that it was only distributed to radio stations and not sold commercially (G.L.O.W., Widow, Freak, and Crestfallen are all promos as well). That’s why it’s semi rare.

16. xyumachine - 10:22 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Apparently KROQ in Los Angeles played One Diamond, One Heart today.

17. jcoriha - 10:31 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

@Johnny I hear what you are saying, but iTunes is pretty much THE one stop you want people to hear you on in today’s “industry”. I think there may be a single push that isn’t as obvious as the past for this album.

18. Johnny - 10:32 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Presumably both aren’t singles, no? So there is evidence of at least some public interest. In any case, I may need to start listening to radio.

19. ! - 10:50 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Wasn’t it Billy’s idea not to release a single in advance and not to give the album for review until release. So I don’t understand all the talk about the record company not pushing the album. The celestials seemed to get a lot of love during the stream so doesnt it seem obvious that this may be a good single. In fact I think there are a handful of potential singles on the album even though alot of people said there wasn’t. Saw a few comments on here saying the the album was terrible I cant understand that at all. You may not like it but I think this album deserves some respect.

20. Stinstrom3 - 10:57 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Like all great pumpkin records everyone has a different favorite song. The band not actually picking a single is smart in that it lets the station decide.

21. Johnny - 11:05 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Nobody was saying the album wasn’t being promoted. I’m sure everyone here enjoys Oceania very much. What we were discussing was radio stations playing The Celestials being played on what seems like many radio stations. I was reading into the fact that One Diamond was also being played that it suggested that neither was an “official” promo, and so that would be one way to get a feel for the public temperature of Oceania (ie, people seem to like it!).

22. jcoriha - 11:06 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

I am also reminded that when I tuned into KROQ down in So Cal around Zeitgeist, it seemed like they were playing Bring the Light a lot more than That’s the Way. Sometimes a station will still do what they used to do (I wish MTV did the same) by trying to actually promote songs they (a DJ/programming director) like.

23. gyang333 - 11:13 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

@xdf
you in Windsor or Detroit? 89X has always played quite a bit of SP over the years.

24. Just_Erick - 11:59 pm // Tuesday, June 12, 2012

There are no official singles yet people, this is strictly by word of mouth. Billy would have easily announced that The Celestials would be the first single to get more people hyped. This is great that the album is getting good press, though I will reflect some peoples thoughts. I too was a bit surprised as making this a first single choice. For sure other songs screamed “pick me,” much more than what I heard from Celestials. However, I know tons of people, HU members included, thought it was worthy as a single. So lets see if it would be.

From the reviews I’ve read, some say that “One Diamond….” has the best chances as a radio single (something Susan also mentioned) but I hope that another song is picked. Inkless or Panopitcon seem like first kind of singles.

25. Listener - 12:09 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

It’s called, in colloquial terms, a radio single.

26. DyingHorseBlues - 12:18 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Good insights, Erick and Listener. I would hope 1D1H would be the first single, I find it to be the most catchy and beautiful song from the record. Panopticon would be an excellent choice too.

27. Just_Erick - 12:30 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

My hunches are strictly going by Billy choices as his first single (history), and he almost always goes with a rocker first.

Gish-I am one
SD- Cherub
Mellon-BWBW
Adore-Ava Adore
Machina-Everlasting
Zeitgeist-Tarantula
—–

Second radio singles are always a much softer, slower, pop like song. So thats why I keep on thinking the first single will either be Panopitcon, or Inkless. And easily could see My Love is Winter, or even The Chimera as single number 2.

28. fg - 12:45 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

My memory might be fuzzy but I think I remember Stand inside your love was going to be the lead single then Machina leaked and radio went with the everlasting gaze and that’s why the video is so cheap and rushed looking.

29. gsmamz - 1:19 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

@ Just_Erick

Actually with MCIS didn’t Billy actually pick Jellybelly…but the label disagreed and decided BWBW needed to be the actual first single?

30. Zave - 2:26 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

FG: If I remember correctly, Stand Inside Your Love was the single chosen for the European market and Everlasting Gaze the one for the US.

31. Just_Erick - 2:29 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Yea it was something like that. But Jellybelly still proves my point. And the real story is that the record label wanted BWBW but Billy wanted Jellybelly because he felt like it represented the band at the time better, so they reached a compromise and did a servey or something like that in K-mart to see which song people liked more. Most people choice BWBW thus that become the single.

@Fg, no Everlasting gaze was the first official single. The video looks cheap because of the overly ambitious director. He’s the same guy that did Try, Try, Try video I believe and again was overly ambitious and did a very bad execution job imo. Though Jonas is a prolific music video director.

32. Is he one? - 6:52 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Very very solid choice as a single. It’s the one that hit me first. Great hooks and chorus and I so love the sound of the guitars! :) Yay!

33. Is he one? - 7:26 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

“Panopticon” would have been my first choice for the reason “Just_Erick” just mentionned. Then “The Celestials” would have been second. But hey, I’m cool with that!!! :-D

34. Misery - 10:04 am // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

The NME magazine gave the album 6/10 BTW guys

35. gingershackleton - 3:11 pm // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

NME are traditionally hard on the pumpkins, they didn’t even like Mellon Collie… where did you see the review? I can’t see it on their website.

36. Johnny - 4:27 pm // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

I couldn’t find it either. I kind of hope they took it down and will do another when it comes out. They haven’t adjusted to positive reaction narrative time. Wouldn’t want to look stupid.

37. jjb - 4:28 pm // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

The NME review is in the print edition, not online yet

38. Kiernana - 7:58 pm // Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Geesh, that must have been a hasty last-minute addition to make print.
