Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan answered some fan questions today, fed to him by Twitter Inc.’s @TwitterMusic account. Corgan filled us in on what time in history he’d take a time machine ride to, and even suggested baby names for one fan.
As far as his band’s plans for 2012, Corgan didn’t reveal much, but regarding the upcoming album Oceania did say that “a release date is imminent,” and he doesn’t currently anticipate any tracklist changes. He also said he was “open to returning to South America” after the band’s successful 2010 tour there.
Was this interview meant to be a joke?
Another announcement about an announcement? “open to returning to South America?” Please. I am sure Billy would be “open” to playing on the moon if the opportunity came along.
At this point, he’s clearly just not going to give any info away until they’re ready to send out the official press release.
I figured as much. However, I do think the question selections were poor but Billy appeared to play along.

@graves Billy has gone back and forth between saying “Spring” and “March”. There is usually at least 3 months between a release date being nailed down and the actual release date. At this point March is almost certainly out of the question, and late April/early May is more likely.
The SP twitter feed has already declared that Spring ends on May 31 (if not earlier) so it shouldn’t be any later than that.
I heard he’s waiting for time travel to be invented so that he can go back and release it in September last year, per the original plan.
The real holdup is that he’s trying to get an endorsement deal with Fosters beer. Get it. Australia. I suck.

@porkchop I would be really surprised if this album is physically released without some gimmick (like the entire 44 song cycle that is Teargarden, a project which realeased 2 songs in the last 12+ months). Or the Zeitgeist retailer specific bonus tracks.
I have a side bet with friends that it won’t be a simple single CD in a case, but something somehow ridiculous. Shame because I still think the actual content will be great.

@skullivan So BC guessed at march release date, but it might be april instead. Big deal. It’s all up to the record label anyway.
I heard the reason for the delay is that, in a forthcomming announcment, Billy is going to reveal that
1)The first Oceania song, Quasar, is going to be the first single, and will be accompanied by a music video directed by Justin Coloma about tea
2)Although Billy “kind of wanted to make another album”, he considers the album dead once again, and will once again release music on line, in a one at a time format, with all new music that has been demoed this month. He considers this “a kaleidyscope within an album within a kaleidyscope”.
3)Billy has entered into a deal with Warner Bros to rerelease Mary Star of the Sea, TheFutureEmbrace, and Zietgiest along with previously unreleased albums Djali Zwan, Spun, ChicagoKid and Residency Songs, all remastered, remixed and reordered for the first time
4)The Pumpkins are thinking about touring, maybe in the spring, maybe in the winter (who knows! Life’s an adventure)
5)More announcments are forthcomming

Oh dear, I haven´t had such a good laugh in quite a time! Bravo! Let me add another one. If there is any reason for the delay it must have something to do with Newt Grinrich´s plans for the new era of space expansion! BC probably made a secret arrangement with Grinrich that SP will be the first band in the entire history of music industry to release an album on the Moon! Well, ain´t that a bummer.

i heard the delay was because there was a delay in making a announcement about the previously announced delays. also what happened to the sprc? that’s kinda dried up too. anyone heard any delayed news about the pre-orders that delayed my siamese dream deluxe edition from ever showing up? there was an announcement about receiving something special??

Everyone needs to stop hyperventilating. Do you understand that the new album will be coming out in the next few months, along with the Pisces reissue? Then the band is going to tour a lot of the year? Then there will be even more reissues in the fall? This is just the quiet before the storm.

I don’t think SPRC is the priority this month/year
I understand new things are happening soon in pumpkin land and I’m excited as anybody. I guess I’m just antsy…..pumpkins fans are weird for sure. I already have everything I could find before the record club came out and I know there is tons waiting to come out but I guess my point is why make such a big exciting deal about sprc then just let it collect dust? Maybe there is worry about oversaturation…..and why did Kerry leave? It seems like Billy is alive with ideas and spreads it out of control. We know the man is prolific and I feel like a 14 year old kid every time I listen to the bonus disc of the siamese dream remaster the creation of sounds to come I guess all whining accumulates to this: i love the pumpkins always have always will but seems to me billy is the lonely wizard behind the curtain pulling all the levers and running out of hands.

It’s been a ridiculously active time for the Pumpkins the last cpl years. Cut B0lly some slack. They’re about to release a new fucking album (within another fucking album!).

I heard the reason for the delay was because Billy has been ambitiously completing the first draft of his memoir, planning a world tour, developing a new wrestling promotion (including a possible reality show), finishing up touches on Oceania, and creating the best suited environment for the whole world to listen to what will be the pumpkins best album in 17 years. Could be total lie though..
