Corgan sifts through the ‘Mellon Collie’ and ‘Adore’ attics 10:57 pm // Monday, December 19, 2011

Since wrapping the Smashing Pumpkins’ European tour on December 10, Billy Corgan has been back in the United States and has apparently started working on sorting through material for the reissues of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Adore.

To recap a bit about the status and schedule of the reissue project: The Pumpkins reissued their first two albums, Gish and Siamese Dream, on November 29, and are scheduled to release several more reissues in 2012. In an October interview with the Detroit News, Corgan stated that the reissue of b-sides album Pisces Iscariot was due out on Record Store Day 2012 – that is, April 21, 2012. In a tweet on December 1, Corgan appears to have reinforced the April release date and suggested that around the same time, the band would release, via the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club, all of their pre-Gish demos and many hours of early live shows and rehearsals. As far as the rest of 2012 goes, the Pumpkins’ August press release stated that reissues of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, The Aeroplane Flies High, and Adore were all scheduled for 2012, probably late in the year.

Corgan’s recent comments give the appearance that he is sorting through unreleased tracks from the Mellon Collie and Adore eras, including full length versions of the “Pastichio Medley” clips “Knuckles” and “Zoom,” an alternate version of “Pastichio Medley” itself, and this guy’s remix of “Ava Adore.”

Corgan told attendees of a fan meetup preceding the Pumpkins’ Boston show on October 21 that he is contractually obligated to reissue the band’s back catalog with EMI by the end of 2013.

Too bad Billy can’t be contractually obligated to follow through on all of the projects he talks about.

maybe he shouldnt talk about his projects then, i might be better if he cuts off communication with his fans or try to get them excited about upcoming things. maybe he should do the american idol thing and go on a reality type tv show to try out new ideas. i understand the frustration but it is his way to engage his fans and sure some ideas dont work out.

then again i guess if people werent so excited or interested in hearing anything from him, then they wouldnt get so frustrated when they dont work out..so that has to be a good thing

There’s nothing wrong with trying to get a lot accomplished. In the end, Billy does get a ton of stuff out.

Where did this sketch come from? Are more of these online somewhere?

@steve

These sketches were released as part of a feature on the old, built-out Pumpkins site back in 2009. Billy discussed his artistic collaborations with Frank Olinsky. Being that the old site is now resigned to the junkheap, that complete interview is now gone, gone, gone (unless someone knows of a mirror/archive).

I’d like to point out that Corgan’s tweet does not claim he is going to release “many hours of early live shows and rehearsals”, it says there will be a compilation of the Rubano tapes, which consists of about 50 hours of material. Although I’d buy a 50 hour package of early SP in a heartbeat, let’s not delude ourselves into thinking this will be anything larger than a 2 or 3 CD set.

Newsflash: every artist (music or otherwise) has tons of projects that don’t get off the ground. The only difference is they don’t tell the fans about them until they get a definite plan to release them or something, like Billy did with the reissues, which people still bitched about anyway because of the “announcements of announcements of announcements” thing. Imagine if Billy had told us about the reissues way early in the talks and the deal didnt work out? More coplaining. he cant win lol

Ziggy:Billy is legally obligated to re-release the albums by 2013…

10. skullivan - 6:46 pm // Tuesday, December 20, 2011

@ziggy Billy has actually been talking about the reissues pretty much since the band reformed. A Gish “boxset” was supposed to be out years ago but they never went forward with it because they didn’t have the rights for any albums past that.

That’s not a knock against Billy though, despite all the stuff that has fallen through over the years the one thing you can’t say about BC is that he hasn’t put out enough music.

I don’t care if it’s 90 seconds; including any version of “Pastichio Medley” on the bonus disc is a waste of space. (Though I heartily welcome including full versions of any songs from the medley)

@anth An SPRC release of the Gravity Demos would be awesome, especially since the “Volume One” designation on the original tape suggested there was more. Or just Billy being Billy I suppose.
