Almost 16 years after the release party for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, a Smashing Pumpkins concert is taking place tonight at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago.

We’re slapping together a list of Twitter users who look to be gathering at Racine, Lawrence, and Broadway; feel free to use the comment section on this post to discuss the events of the night.

8pm CT: A brief surprise set by Catherine, the Chicago band for which current Pumpkins producer Kerry Brown was drummer during the mid-1990s, is supposed to take place following the Pumpkins’ performance. Billy Corgan is expected to play guitar with Catherine.

8:55pm CT: The Pumpkins are on.

10:40pm CT: Almost 100 Twitter users now on our list; check out what they are sharing from inside the venue as the show continues.

UPDATE (10/15): Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune: “A triumphant night for the Pumpkins.”

UPDATE ( 10/15, 9:23pm): Setlist is now at SPFC.org and a 24-bit recording is available at archive.org.

hopefully the lights dont go out AGAIN.

2. Debra DiBartolo - 6:51 pm // Friday, October 14, 2011

That was a classic. I have a tape that I made at the show and Billy kept the show going even without the lights.

3. Acknowledge - 7:18 pm // Friday, October 14, 2011

Have fun at the show jjb! So jealous of all of you!

4. snowtrooper - 10:28 pm // Friday, October 14, 2011

HeyBrtnyBrittany
“Smashing Pumpkins fans are the literal worst.”

other than the obvious, can anyone explain why?

5. mhart - 1:45 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

Those USB sticks with the recording of the show on them are a complete rip off. The audio is just awful. It sounds like someone with a old fashion tape recorded in their pocket but even that would sound better then this thing.

6. mhart - 2:01 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

just to prove how bad the sound is here is Cherub Rock from the USB stick bought at Chicago. http://mikehart.net/16_Cherub_Rock.mp3

7. 34 - 3:45 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

@mhart Actually it sounds like you ripped the audio from a shitty cell-phone video on YouTube. Which is what I’m guessing you did (unless, of course, it was your own shitty cell-phone video). Nice try, though.

8. wtf - 8:12 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

@34 I think mhart is speaking truth. If you look at his website mikehart.net he appears to be a parent and has also sent out his complaint via twitter. Definitely not fitting the typical troll picture. The USB process is so rushed (I saw the guys frantically jamming USB drives into whatever device they use to record/transfer the audio) I could totally imagine sound quality suffering. I’m just surprised this is the first complaint we’ve seen (maybe Chicago is the first night their QA failed)

9. MarcB - 8:31 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

That’s got to be a mistake… There’s NO WAY they’d be selling audio that bad, someone would have said something by now. My guess is something went wrong either with this batch or that one recording… Sounds like it was just captured from one mic…

10. Rota - 8:36 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

It seems legit. Someone on netphoria complained to them about it and they replied that they would try and fix the problem or offer a full refund.

11. E.T. - 9:36 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

The sound sucks because The Riv sucks. Lay off the band, they don’t pick the venue.

12. mhart - 10:22 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

No that audio is not from a cell phone, in fact the video I did record from my iPhone sounds 10x better than this.

13. scott chambers (@scottythe1nonly) - 10:44 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

The audio from all the previous show USBs is very good quality, right off the boards. milwaukee sounds fantastic.

14. Marvin the Martian - 11:03 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

I was really disappointed Billy didn’t play the Chicago Code theme song last night. Would’ve been perfect for the home town crowd.

15. mhart - 11:20 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

well something went horribly wrong with last nights recording. I’m gonna try to contact Aderra, the company behind the USB’s and see what they say.

16. Martin J Rios - 11:29 am // Saturday, October 15, 2011

My USB from the Denver show sounds amazing. I am sure there was some sort of issue that they would be happy to fix if you contact them.

17. Drevpile - 1:09 pm // Saturday, October 15, 2011

Who was tweeting from HU please~? Actually, don’t tell me if it was Jason…

18. afk - 2:21 pm // Saturday, October 15, 2011

The Denver USB sound is crisp and clear. It sounds nothing like Mhart posted.

19. susan - 3:30 pm // Saturday, October 15, 2011

Looks like multiple people are reporting problems with last night’s USBs, but if you contact Aderra, they will try to make it right or give you a refund.

@drevpile Wasn’t me!

21. Drevpile - 4:12 pm // Saturday, October 15, 2011

Phew.

22. susan - 4:19 pm // Saturday, October 15, 2011

yeah, official confirmation from the band about the USB sound issues.

23. mhart - 5:16 pm // Saturday, October 15, 2011

The company behind the USB stick Aderra took care of the problem, they sent me a link to download the show and it really does sound great.

@34 – Ha, and you thought I was lying.

24. 34 - 7:54 pm // Saturday, October 15, 2011

@mhart I stand corrected. Well, I’m sitting, but yeah. Wonder how they managed to screw it up that bad, unless they somehow normalized the show at +24dB…

25. Graves - 2:18 am // Sunday, October 16, 2011

So is it worth buying the USB stick over just buying the $15 download?

26. 34 - 5:02 am // Sunday, October 16, 2011

@Graves – if you want the cool-looking laminate/neck-strap and a 2G USB stick that you can use for something else if you ever decide to, as well as access to “exclusive content” that is supposed to go up online at some point (last I checked there wasn’t any), then yes. Personally, I’m interested to see if they’ll do any kind of bundling download deals for people who’ve already bought USBs at the shows.

27. ithinkican - 7:45 am // Sunday, October 16, 2011

2Gb flash drive costs like 5$ so you’re paying 5$ for ‘exclusive content’. Guess it’s kinda worth it. Oh, I forgot about the strap too.

28. redhandcorgan - 10:16 pm // Sunday, October 16, 2011

Same set list every night over and over and over BORING!!!!!!!

29. Jonk - 6:13 am // Monday, October 17, 2011

“I was really disappointed Billy didn’t play the Chicago Code theme song last night. Would’ve been perfect for the home town crowd.”

lmao

30. Jonk - 6:29 am // Monday, October 17, 2011

Checking out My Love is Winter from the archive.org site from the Chicago show. Sounds better from this show (compared to the first couple shows)

31. 34 - 3:22 am // Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Anyone w/ the USBs/downloads from this show (or any shows past the first 2)- how are the toms (most obvious on Silverfuck)? Decent mix, or still way louder than everything else?

32. Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins break with producer Kerry Brown « Hipsters United - 11:00 am // Friday, December 9, 2011

[...] break between Corgan and Brown came only weeks after the two shared a stage at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre, when Brown’s band Catherine joined Corgan to perform two songs during an encore at a Smashing [...]
