Let me be the first to say I enjoyed ALMOST nothing from this video. I liked SFAS in the credits….that’s about it. DISAPPOINTED!!!

2. brian - 10:02 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Have to say the video was pretty pointless as I knew it would be. The girls looked hott in it and thats about it.

3. theFred - 10:03 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

next…

4. MayonaiseLover - 10:06 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Three words, What The F*&%?!?!?!

I still like the song (liked the live version they better), but seriously Billy what were you thinking?

5. Jacob - 10:07 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Unlike the long form videos artist have put out for their fans, this does not really appeal to the general aduiance I would imagine. I don’t see much of a SP feel to the video. Billy might love the idea of the video but it won’t catch on for me. I am kind of disappointed for the most part. I never thought I’d saiy it but this is the first time my favorite band has put out something I did not like.

6. THE FREAK - 10:10 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Worst piece of crap Ive ever seen in my whole life. This video was pointless, cheesy, and the music did not fit at all! Terrible mistake on Billys part. I am sad to be a pumpkins fan after watching that

7. zanzabar - 10:13 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

judging things only seconds after they have existed is such a good habit…

8. r10t - 10:13 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

I have listened to The Smashing Pumpkins for the past 18 years, and my friends have often teased me that I was a mindless Billy-loving drone, who would declare a fart from Billy as an amazing ground breaking piece of music. It has proved true to an extent, I love every song the man has ever recorded be it under the Pumpkins banner or not but this… this is the worse piece of crap I’ve ever seen. I actually feel that watching this was a major waste of my time, there is nothing redeeming about it.

9. titi - 10:13 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Again, i think my sp fan time has gone, don´t need to see the complete video…

10. nobody - 10:14 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Embarrasing…. sh, sh, sh, sh, sh, shame :(

11. THE FREAK - 10:14 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

However, this isnt the official music video so MAYBE it will be better than this. It can only get better, right?

12. redhandcorgan - 10:16 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Billy is stuck as a 10 year old get over it billy wrestling is fake!!! the matches are pre determined

13. wtf - 10:16 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

can someone upload this to youtube so we can skip around? I hate the yahoo video player.. thanks

14. Acknowledge - 10:17 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

So..yahoo doesnt allow you to fastforward…well, I accidentally hit refresh at the 7:00 mark, and my friends and I groaned that we had to watch it all the way thru just to see the ending. This is just so far from the “artistic intellect” or whatever that Ive come to associate with SP. My usual response is to ask “what was the artist trying to do”. In that sense, I might give it a few more watches – but deep down, I just dont think I can get thru it again. :/
Im…hesitant to see what the video cut will be like.

15. THE FREAK - 10:17 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

@wtf- save yourself the time and dont watch it

16. redhandcorgan - 10:18 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Fucking video getting my dizzy who filmed this shit!!

17. redhandcorgan - 10:18 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

18. doug g. - 10:19 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Wow… this is horrible. I don’t understand SP anymore. This is getting into Rebecca Black “Friday” material. I mean… this is all vanity stuff paid for by Corgan independently. He doesn’t understand how the internet works. This appeals to almost NO ONE. It was poorly produced with cringe worthy, awkward moments. The camera work is horrible. The audio is awful.

19. r10t - 10:24 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Remember the extended short film for “Try, Try, Try”??? That was heart wrenching, terrifying, yet there was a sombre beauty to it. Not to sound pretentious, but I really mean that. It was powerful, and easy to understand why the music of the Smashing Pumpkins complimented it, and was a worthy companion.

I am absolutely flabbergasted by this. It also highly confuses me, because I have never felt these feelings towards anything that Billy Corgan has ever done or released.

20. Rudy - 10:24 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

I love wrestling. I love The Smashing Pumpkins. That was a complete was of my time.

21. CB - 10:25 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Fuck, man…just…fuck.

22. Just_Erick - 10:29 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Guys im pretty sure this is the long version of the music video…though thats not saying much. It was pretty embarrassing from start to finish. The video had absolutely no point to it at all..I mean seeing the band play this in a garage would have been far more satisfying…Geezus I don’t know what to say. I am incredible disappointed.

23. JSouth - 10:30 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Jesus God Damn Tap Dancing Christ, WHAT THE F WAS THAT? I love most of Billy/SPs videos, but this was bad…. Really bad… I like wrestling too, but this is bad, I mean I guess I kind of see how the lyrics fit what was going on… But did this really need to be 10+ min long? And this song didn’t fit this video at all… Good Lord… Time to watch sportscenter and try to fall asleep and not to have nightmares about what I just watched…

25. JCelsius - 10:38 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

@zanzabar, this is honestly one of those things that’s so bad I can judge it seconds after watching it. It’s like “the Grudge” for me. I knew within seconds of the credits that it was my new least favorite movie. (Little did I know that years later the movie “Zombie Nation” would make that and even this Owata video, look like heaven incarnate.)

26. Dylan - 10:40 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

I am listening to Translucent.

27. AreYouHe? - 10:42 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

By the way, it’s so damn laggy/skippy on that site that I can’t even watch it, nor does downloadhelper recognize it, so I can’t watch it cleanly from my hard drive either. Guess I’ll be waiting for someone to YouTube it.

28. snowtrooper - 10:53 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

10.20 – i think it just moved.

the rest was meh. though it was cool to see the aloha and shallow cliff ….but sadly that doesnt make for a good video.

29. darkharlequin - 11:10 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Man, I forgot what a pretentious bunch Smashing Pumpkins fans are. The Wrestler starring Mickie Rouke was about professional wrestling and well just look at the accolades it achieved.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrestler_%282008_film%29#Accolades

Although I’m sure your favourite indie flash in the pan could produce something much more suited to your much more sophisticated palate or you could take your head out of your arse and watch it again.

30. THE FREAK - 11:21 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

@ darkharlequin- Are you being serious? How could you actually compare that turd sandwich to The Wrestler? That is like comparing the a pee wee football scrimmage to the Super Bowl. You are missing the entire point: we dont hate wrestling. We just hate bad SP music mixed over awful acting, terrible wrestling skills, and pointless music videos that do nothing but destroy the reputation of SP. Moron…

31. ! - 11:28 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

A few mins of my life I will never get back. Owata shitty video.

32. Matt - 11:42 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

I don’t think anyone likes this

33. Andy - 11:46 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

So billy has a crush on a wrastlin’ woman and made a music video about the crush. kinda weird.

34. Duy Nguyen - 11:47 pm // Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Really disappointing. I’m starting to feel that Billy is TRYING to piss as many people off as possible.

35. Ed Cureton - 12:02 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I tend to agree with most everyone on here. Curious what the actual music video brings but this short is horrible. It’s absolutely pointless. At least Jonas Akerlund’s Try had a plot and evoked emotion. This is just filler. I know BC is a wrestling nut but common.

I can’t believe this. Not to mention the studio version w/ all the synths absolutely ruined Owata. During the 20th anniversary tour this was one of my favorite new songs. Now, I can’t even stand to listen to it.

I don’t think I’ve ever hated a Pumpkins video more than this.

36. PJS - 12:14 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Wow no one liked the “music video”…and that counts me. That might be the worst most pointless video in the history of music videos. Smashing Pumpkins videos have almost all been groundbreaking and beautiful and visually stunning but the video didnt even come close to matching the song. Its like shooting a video of a figure skating to a cannibal corpse song. Good lord. Billy may have completely lost his mind. I hate to say it because I love the guy but good god.

37. thereitgoes - 12:22 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

What if the short version has nothing to do with wrestling? lol

I do feel bad for Billy though right now. HUGE missed opportunity to give this great song a great video =/

38. Bountiful_Wasteland - 12:28 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I dug this video. I am 100% serious. I like what they did, and if I’m the only person who enjoyed it, I am totally cool with that. That being said I’ve never seen such a closed minded, whiny jerked kneed response on such a appalling previously in my life. If this let you down so much than just let it go. Move on to something that makes you happy.

39. Ed Cureton - 12:32 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Bountiful: criticism of one song or video doesn’t imply that people are against the new work that SP is producing.

I’m not going to simply stop following SP and supporting them because they released something I absolutely hated. Now, if I continue to dislike future songs and videos then yeah sure, I’ll stop whining and just stop listening.

Some people are directly attacking BC/SP but the majority of people are just expressing their frustration with this video…and I don’t see anything wrong w/ that.

40. Bountiful_Wasteland - 12:36 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I feel like people are missing the whole point of this video because they are too busy caught up in stupid music world status pecking order and band image bullshit.

41. thereitgoes - 12:47 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

^yeah, that’s it.

42. Ed Cureton - 12:49 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I think a lot of people are simply asking, “What is the point of this short?”

I couldn’t care less about what the band did in the past, their image, the current lineup etc. That said, I received no enjoyment or satisfaction from the studio version of this song or short film.

43. Bountiful_Wasteland - 12:50 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Are you being sarcastic or do you really agree?

44. afk - 12:55 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

This is seriously the worst music video I have ever seen. It pains me to say that about my favorite band, who also happens to hold the title of best music video I have ever seen.

To echo the other comments, WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING BILLY?

45. rat in a cage - 12:58 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Pity. I was hoping for inside info on Teargarden or maybe a strange alice in wonderland like fantasy animated short.

46. PinkMnM - 1:34 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

eer… Interesting story i guess. I hope they at least all had fun making it, and that it didn’t cost to much.

47. dustrock - 1:49 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Never really got Owata going with women’s wrestling. I mean we already had GLOW and his WWE or whatever promotions. This just seems like some kind of a fanboy tribute to women’s wrestling and it has absolutely nothing to do with the song or the band Smashing Pumpkins.

This doesn’t anger me or anything, just really missing the point and wondering why they’re trying to market this as the video for Owata (I know there is the short version coming).

The tone of the video makes it seem like a song from the Zero single might have fit better.

48. internetcliche - 2:34 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Buffering so hardcore, going to take a lot longer than 12 minutes to watch it…

49. Kenneth R. Hammond - 2:55 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

im glad im not the only one who was thinking what the fuck is this while watching it. So much negative reviews. I must say this is by far the most disappointing thing I have seen Billy publish. I love you a ton man but I feel like you need a muse.

50. Misery - 3:43 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Whenever Owata is actually playing, the footage looks like it would be used as the filler in between acts during Eurovision. Not good.
Hopefully the short version will have a better cut or something.

51. Misery - 3:49 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

What they should have done was impose the faces of Billy Corgan et al on to the wrestlers. Or done it with those Mexican wrestlers from that show.

52. John Cortez - 4:08 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

LOL, was anyone actually expecting this to be good? I think we all knew what the results would be from the minute they announced it was going to essentially be a wrestling promo.

There’s no possible way it was going to magically end up as a compelling piece of work when the concept was purely to highlight the national sport of dullards (sorry, Billy).

53. Seb - 5:27 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

(*song plays* “Oh what a beautiful sight you are to me..” *girl gets her face smashed to the floor by a boot to the back*) I could swear that was Billy in a Gish-era wig during the backstage curtain scene.. but I ain’t playing that vid ever again..

54. I Lie - 5:39 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

That guy was a good actor…

55. Drevpile - 5:52 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

A new nadir for the Smashing Pumpkins. Well done Billy, if you have achieved nothing else with this crap, you have set the bar so low with – that it can only look up from here on in.

56. Treg - 6:02 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

This was fucking terrible. And I’m a wrestling fan. How in the fuck does the song fit with THIS?! The whole wrestling “story” on it’s own was completely meaningless. What the fuck are you thinking Billy?! You trying to troll your fans again? Way to prove you still can make something of value these days >:(

57. Treg - 6:06 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Seriously.. Beethoven would be more appropriate music for this crap than Owata.

58. Ed Cureton - 6:19 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

…Did anyone here post on the Smashing Pumpkins page on facebook? There was a very spirited discussion aka most people hated it…

Woke up this morning and it’s been deleted. Go figure

59. snowtrooper - 6:20 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

wasnt there something with some super amazing great camera involved here? maybe that was the problem, the camera ruined it.

60. Sad Navigator - 6:22 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I really expected to super hate this (especially after reading the comments here). However, it was just kind of a pointless music video (as many/most are). I thought some of the shots were well done. The griminess really did feel right for where they filmed it in the Chicago area.

Anyway, I was struck by the similarities between the image surrounding independent wrestling and the vibe surrounding flat-track women’s roller derby. This video is like a little love letter to a little world that Corgan enjoys.

I wonder how honest some folks who are doing the whole “Pumpkins videos used to be great and now ARRRRG!” thing are being. I mean, “Today” is a encyclopedia of ’90s visual cliches bolted to a “plot” about an ice cream truck in the desert. “Bullet” is basically the “Teen Spirit” video ported from a high school to a mud pit. “Rhinoceros” is basically screams IT CAME FROM JBTV. Sure, “Tonight, Tonight” and “1979″ are visionary. And the “look” of the band was (perhaps its most) interesting and creepy and cool during the period when Corgan and Yelena Yemchuk were collaborating. And even then, people bitched about the goth stuff and the dresses and the “Who does he think he is trying to be creepy?”

I’m just saying that, perhaps, this video isn’t super incongruous with the rest of the Pumpkins thing. Why is it surprising that a guy who seems to actively enjoy thwarting expectations AND who made his name with a record about what a dorky, insecure, angry guy he is would commission a music video about a niche thing that he is super into when OBVIOUSLY it would make more sense for him to tow the line and do an appropriate video in an appropriate style? It’s not like he couldn’t throw money at whoever does those OK GO videos if he wanted to go all charmingly quirky viral. Face it, Corgan is kinda like someone’s weird uncle/cousin at this point. Which is kinda how its always been.

I’ll prolly watch this as many times as I watched that long-ass “Try x 3″ video. Twice. Then it’ll be time to move along.

61. JD - 6:34 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

BIG Let Down.

62. trist56 - 6:58 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I try to remain positive as best I can, and I hate to say it, but I’m actually embarrassed to be a Pumpkins fan right about now. As I pretty much expected from when I heard about the concept, the film is completely misguided. Owata does not fit the video in any way shape or form…and you can’t even say that this lack of cohesion is quirky, or ironic, because it isn’t. It’s just plain bad.

63. Erica - 7:10 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Billy, swallow your pride and contact D’Arcy: Do whatever it takes to bring her around. The same with James, followed by Jimmy. Nothing against the ‘new’ members, but as an Artist you’re now dead… Go back to where things were, sort things slowly as you progress from there. Good luck and Godspeed.

64. Brian - 7:21 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I think an apology / explanation is due from Billy on this piece of crap.

65. mason - 7:35 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Could you please NOT notify us about the next video?!?! That way, when I randomly come across this piece of crap, it’s a mere annoyance, like stepping in dog poop. However, when you’ve come to expect a decent steak, and you’re offered a large piece of crap instead, it is an enormous let down. I would have settled for a McDonald’s hamburger for crying out loud. A song I once enjoyed live has now been solidified as total garbage by a bad studio version and an even worse short film.

66. Vaughn - 7:45 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

What an incredible video.

Honestly.

I can understand why there are so many people unhappy, especially if they somehow missed the analogy of what the wrestlers and the band itself is going through. When you actually look at the way in which the wrestlers are being abused and misled by the management and the people who are supposed to love them, it really rings true for the band’s experience of late. The feedback here just drives the point home.

This is a phenomenal video. Congratulations to all involved.

67. Paul - 7:45 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

the link the new video has been taken I think they might have done the right thing and taken it down. Itgot an absolutely disastrous response that prob would actually damage reputation of band, so hopefully they taken it off and will remove it and we can all move on and focus on the new album which will hopefully be awesome :)

68. behold! tonight pistol pete and 33 bullets with muzzled wings - 7:59 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

this video just cements the feeling that oceania will be a let down too.

69. Paul - 8:05 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Think we should listen to this to dissipate some of the anger and remain positive about the amazing music to come:

-Paul.

70. Wemustneverbeapart - 8:12 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Actually I like it. First of all Owata is not my favorite Teargarden track, that’s why I didn’t have high big expectations of the video itself. When I first heard about it I was like, well woman wrestling synth driven ballad is going to be pretty bizzare. Actually it happened to be not. To understand this video it’s good to go back to Try Try Try which is also a short movie, featuring song which is a part of the concept album although the video itself doesn’t correspond with the Machina story. The main idea in Try was to tell a story which atmosphere corresponds with the general feeling of the song. In the expanded version we never hear Corgan so music is only a soundtrack to the actual image – Owata features parts of the song which is different. Still I see the way Corgan aproaches longer pieces pretty the same when comparing the two videos between which you have almost a decade. Each of them tells a story which loosely corresponds with the lyrics and main idea is to capture the feeling the music brings in. It’s hard to deny that in Owata we have some decent, sometimes pretty shots (hence car scene, city scapes, I also enjoyed those during Raven’s workout). While the story is pretty simple and far from being ambitious the whole image nicely blends in with the song. I’m waiting for the music video version, because I have a feeling it’s going to be good. In overall, I recommend you watching it once again through that criteria and trying to look at things a little bit differently.

72. ? - 8:27 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I think a better concept for the video would have been for it to be set in a fast food restaurant. And show Mikey screwing around messing up orders, spilling shit, etc. Billy could have dressed up as the manager of the place or something. Then by the end of the video he ends up joining SP and there would be a scene with the whole band rocking out on stage in the end. Idk maybe I am crazy. But it would have been funnier than this garbage.

73. fresh8itch - 8:50 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I liked it. It adds a bit of information (depth of our knowledge) to what interests fuel BC’s creativity. It’s a gritty yet sweet (plot is kind of weak/cliched but it’s a short film/music video) eye into a world that many people have never seen. In twelve minutes, a bit of action occurred, some comedy, some sadness (or mild annoyance) and some comforting. I liked how it was filmed. And it is trying to do something different with a somewhat haggard format– it is hard at this point to come up with fresh ideas/styles for videos. I completely admire the scope of this project.

74. Cam - 8:54 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I’m not a fan of this at all, but i’m not going to bash it. From a business standpoint it isn’t lucrative to cater to established fans that own an entire catalog. As much as established fans want to be butthurt about it, it’s the truth. Billy is trying to establish the ‘Smashing Pumpkins’ brand in different arenas, and has chosen to expose his brand to people that may have no previous experience with it through a common interest.

I was very disappointed with this. The song was not played in its entirety. It was lame. Maybe he did this on purpose to make Oceanea seem like its gold when it comes out. This video makes no sense at all. This song is kinda happy when you listen to the lyrics but the video was not happy at all. It was depressing. I don’t get it.

77. Sad Navigator - 9:23 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

@videojoe — Is it happy? Is it sad? Is it “a wonderful night?” Is today REALLY the greatest day? See also, bittersweet. E.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7nDwtAVA8Y

damn. that was a bummer.

79. Justin Doak - 9:32 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

i’m with bountiful wasteland. there is a pretty incredible message inside this video that is closely knit to they storyline and content that a lot of pumpkins portfolio has touched on – it just happens to be tucked inside a new format and device. ironically – i see the video as closely representing the drama behind any one of the entertainment industies. I for one enjoyed it this longer track, especially with weaving of other teargarden tunes and look forward to the “masses” format too.

so much hate in these threads. you all remind me of the guy cheating in the video. chew on that….. you scream and support them at the show and fuckin’ dis the reality on your pretty chat threads.

80. batterycock - 9:45 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

what the fuck drugs is billy on?? well, you can’t lay a golden turd everytime i guess.

81. Cain - 9:59 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I can see this being analogous to the band. Especially the part when everyone is yelling “You suck, You suck”

82. Seb - 10:08 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

@78
There is no intent to this film.. The only thing I learned is women wrestlers are better off being lesbians..

83. Misery - 10:15 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

What I didn’t get was why the guy cheated on his girlfriend by having sex outside of her motel room. Since he said he was going to wait until after she went back, he clearly didn’t want her to know, yet has sex DIRECTLY outside of the door, against a van.

THAT’S THE MAIN/ONLY PROBLEM WITH THIS

84. brandy - 10:20 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Good strory could save this short film .. but … oh well.

85. randia - 10:29 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

wait. so people could actually sit through this? The acting would have been tolerable for a music video but not for a short film. It’s awful. The fact that I couldn’t fast forward made it terrible. I was jut waiting for the video part to start and I couldn’t do it. I don’t care what message was in it. I’m not eating the most delicious ice cream in the world if it’s covered in poo. I know this is the age of youtube and do it yourself but really, I don’t want to watch some stranger’s home videos; I’ll just make my own. The fact that some really expensive camera was used is just silly.

86. Black&GoldSuperBowl - 10:35 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I think this is lowest point I’ve felt about SP and I anticipate having a hard time explaining this one to most of my “only like the first three albums” friends ….

Even though I hate wrestling, this would’ve been easier to accept had it been more for the wrestling promotion that just so happens to have SP music as the soundtrack…But to promote it as a “SP Short-film” on all the music sites Spin, NME, etc. is really embarrassing for SP in the music scene.

Billy always wonders why he is never recognized for his artistic visions and moving forward approach….Its because idiotic decisions like this video, the ad in the newspaper, etc…that overshadow any sort of musical aspect…………I am still positive for Oceania, but no matter what he will say, it HAS to be a make it or break it album…Hate to say it, but you already lost & alienated your average SP fans, but you are about to lose your die-hards too!

87. Misery - 10:38 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

What it should have been, was Billy on his own, on a four-person-bike. Like a lengthened tandem, eating the most delicious ice cream in the world, then he sits next to a pond and watches the sunset.
But while this is happening, Mike, Nicole & Jeff are in a burger bar, Mike’s flipping burgers, and Jeff’s a roller-skating waiter. Nicole’s just standing there with a bass. They’re serving all the previous members of the band, but they keep making increasingly complex orders, and then Jeff starts to cry, and KAJ runs in and smashes their heads through hoops.
Then it cuts to Billy, with a sledgehammer, and he smashes a pumpkin, turns to the camera and whispers ‘Oceania’ before blowing away in the wind.

after watching that i understand why jeff wasn’t at the taping of the video.

this video/short film would have been better if everyone was wearing jetpacks. there was a dancing pack of midgets in parachute pants, an old man complains about the lack of milk men now a days, instead of wrestling they were at a hotdog eating contest, and ron burgandy tells everyone to stay classy at the end as the screen fades to black.

91. thereitgoes - 11:00 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

To me it was just a bummer hyping this up at my friends house last night, those of which don’t know much about SP, and I can tell you now after watching that with them I don’t think they’ll be taking me seriously about this band anymore. Not gonna hate, just think it was poorly done. Maybe the music video will be better, if not, still looking forward to Oceania.

I haven’t watched it yet (but judging for the response, I’m not going to necessarily enjoy it). However, I do feel like there’s a lot of really strong negative reactions here, as if people were almost personally offended by the fact that the video didn’t live up to what they wanted. I’m all for disliking it. If you think it’s not any good, then that’s OK. But is there any need to lash out in anger about it? I can see why Billy gets upset about things like this. At the same time, I think he should do what most artists do and ignore fan message boards. Billy, just stop reading what we post here, it’s for your own good.

96. JCelsius - 11:40 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

In this thread:

Insane Bashing of Billy Corgan
The Usual “Get the old band back!”
An amazing concept from Misery.
Speculation that his in some way reflects on Oceania

oh and probably the dumbest thing

Comparing this short to “The Wrestler”

Okay, I get that you don’t want to be all negative about this, honestly, neither do I, but really?
You know what that movie had? Mickey Rourke (amazing actor), Darren Aronofsky (amazing director). This movie had none of that. I’m not going to attack the director because some of the shots look good, although technically that would be the cinematographer. I will say that the acting was terrible. It was pretty obvious that that one wrestler (you know the one) was in this for two BIG reasons and those reasons only. I mean, I thought they were good reasons, but it wasn’t enough to bring this short into any sort of light for me. The dialogue was TERRIBLE. I particularly hate how the male figure/manager calls himself a genius, a maestro, a conductor and then repeats himself not ten seconds later. That was the low point for me. The music just didn’t fit except for the end and when she comes outside to see her man on another woman. (The breakdown in Owata actually worked well there)

What really upsets me most of all about this: It is pretty obvious Billy and Co. put a lot of effort into this. Hell, they even got KAJ to smash a pumpkin for it. Pulling those kind of strings can’t be super easy and well, I just hate that Billy is going to see/ has already seen the fan backlash and I’m sure it’ll upset him. He obviously likes this and had fun making it, and I love that for him, I just hate anything that brings negativity on this scale. I still have high hopes for Oceania because this video really has NOTHING to do with it. All the evidence so far makes the album within an album look promising and this video does nothing to hinder that thought. Of course, we’ll see soon enough. If WPC is watching I hope he realizes while we didn’t like it, most of us still have faith in him. (Or I should hope so)

97. Spumkins33 - 11:53 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

I would have liked to have seen a music video that branded the new band. Shots of the new folks playing the songs, looking happy (which they always do when they’re together). I’m thinking like the “Lyric” video.

SP looks different, and a music video on a major site like Yahoo would have established the new bassist, Nicole (who is attractive), Billy who is looking healthy and happy, Jeff who is awesome, and fresh-faced Mike bringing youthful enthusiasm back to the band. From the updates on “Oceania” and the enthusiasm by the entire band, they are in a VERY good and positive place. They need to reflect this in their creative.

I’m in a band, and the thought of acting, or appearing lip syncing in a music video frightens me – so maybe that played a factor in why Jeff and Mike weren’t in it (and Nicole and Billy only for a few shots).

98. Misery - 11:57 am // Thursday, June 30, 2011

@JCelsius
The KAJ thing was for Oceania, not Owata… Besides, it’s the video, not the song, which is getting the negative reaction, the song being the important part.

99. Is he one? - 12:08 pm // Thursday, June 30, 2011

104. jibernish - 12:20 pm // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Put aside for a moment concerns of whether this video is good or not. What’s troubling here is the anger and even hatred that is directed towards a man who is making songs and a video, which are all being given away for free.

I agree with Vaughn: substitute Billy for Flash, and SP ‘fans’/critics/management for Raven/booing wrestling fans and you have a commentary on his experience of how so many seem to think they have a say or stake in the music he creates, or that they have been personally wronged.

Whether or not he intended to insert a deeper level of meaning here, like he did with Machina, we can now sit back as people spew forth anger, hatred, and pass off opinions as fact. We can watch them claim that there is “no point” to this project when there clearly is, proving that much of the criticism thrown his way is misguided or dishonest at best. The video pretty much predicts the behavior/response it would receive, and it can be seen being played out right here. He may have misjudged how many people would see the deeper level, but doesn’t he always do that?

Is it really worth getting this upset about?

Maybe the video wasn’t the best thing he’s ever done, maybe no one will understand what he was trying to do, and maybe as he changes, his music does too, thus leaving some fans behind. Is that so wrong?

105. dork butter - 12:28 pm // Thursday, June 30, 2011

107. Gv - 12:33 pm // Thursday, June 30, 2011

Things I don’t like about the video:

A) The drab color scheme doesn’t fit with the material. You can’t do an “ironic” color scheme for a video. I was expecting a strangely colorful/pastel/beautiful rendition of two women wrestling. They sort of got that effect when the upbeat music chimed in while they were in-the-zone, training, away from the drab life outside of the ring. But it never dove into that zone. It happened for like 10 seconds at a time, and wasn’t paired with a change to the visuals.

B) The song isn’t utilized or showcased. Comes off as a lack of confidence in the material.

C) I don’t like the politics of the story. Tough man bad. Women = victims. Women good.

I’m kinda curious about the average of the folks freaking out about this video. I mean, back in the “bad old days” videos just came on MTV all willy-nilly and you had to catch them when they came on. And sometimes they were dumb or weird or disappointing. And you watched them and just made a little mental note. Maybe you joked about them with your friends. It wasn’t that big of a deal and it didn’t make you “embarrassed to be a fan” or whatever. I mean, I didn’t swear off U2 and flush my PopMart tix down the potty because I saw this…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Crpw-nfCok. I think that the internet makes people into crazy fanbois paranoid about whether or not something will be taken seriously.

Remove the scene where they almost kiss (typical male fantasy), cover up that thong (typical male fantasy), and maybe rethink the use of the song, and I’m OK with it. Honestly, the song seemed to just randomly bubble up out of nowhere. The overall idea that we have these sympathetic hard working women (unfortunately in a rather sexist sport) being degraded by males is interesting, because obviously this is trying to show how these women are getting a raw deal. I’m not sure it’s very revolutionary in that aspect (again, filled with those typical male fantasies that kind of work against the message), but at least it wasn’t trying to use the women as eye candy while the song played on top of it (for the most part). That was what I worried about. I didn’t want to watch this video and then come away thinking Billy is incredibly sexist, and I’m glad that wasn’t the case. I don’t think I’ll watch it again, but I see what the goal was.

I thought it was okay. It did have those “male fantasy” moments but it’s nothing exceptional to the standards of modesty of wrestling. What GUY would wear what typical male wrestlers wear? The story was melodramatic and soapish — just like wrestling! I thought it was a decent homage to one of Billy’s interests, and I have to confess that it created some interest in me in small-time, underground wrestling.

Disagree with most of the bashing.

125. dustrock - 5:21 pm // Thursday, June 30, 2011

So if this is the story of the band is Billy the jerkstore wrestling guy or his bisexual protege?

126. smiling politely - 6:10 pm // Thursday, June 30, 2011

That was absolutely awful. It looked like it was made by a first year film student, the one who couldn’t think of what to go to college for and thought making movies would be neat-o because the Transformers movies were just that cool. The fact that Billy would pay good money for it and actually promote it shows bad taste and reflects poorly on him. A good artist of any kind should be able to spot amateurish works in other mediums especially when they’re that bad. I can’t even decide what was the worst part. The music coming in and out at totally random points that didn’t work at all? The shitty cinematography and obvious lack of a DOP who knew what they were doing? The ridiculous editing? The acting and casting?

127. darkharlequin - 8:34 pm // Thursday, June 30, 2011

@THE FREAK – Seeing as some people telling people that Billy should group up and that wrestling is fake and start up with all this snotty “sooooo embarrassing” bullshit whenever Billy’s connection to wrestling comes up I think I might be on to something. Yeah ok, this is no way near as good as The Wrestler but from the way some people were acting I wonder if this wasn’t about wrestling would people be throwing the fit they are hence the comparison. Oh and as for calling me a moron that’s really hurts coming from some guy who put as much thought into his post as I did in taking my last shit.

I don’t think anybody hates Billy, save for some trolls. Demanding quality work from a musician who is capable of delivering it is just like expecting a good product from a company you trust or good service from your favorite restaurant. It’s the reality of a service industry (which is really what the music business amounts to).

Yep, I can’t help but agree that the short film was a bit of a wierd one. No point to it really. We are just slaves to BC’s universe by watching it.
I would like to know which shots were used with that fancy new red epic camera technology. I can’t see any difference so seems like a waste of time and money to me. Those red epic camera’s should only be used for big blockbusters for 3D movies like Peter Jackson will be using in The Hobbit films. I am a big fan of SP for many many years (since 94 actaully) and I have come to understand and adapt to BC’s decisions buth this video is bad but I won’t completely blame him after all he wasn’t the director. And it would be wildly stupid to suggest that billy’s musicianship is going down the drain just for releasing a strange wrestling film. Bring on Oceania I say!!!!!!!!!

Just comes across as really awkward.

152. Johnny - 3:59 pm // Sunday, July 3, 2011

I’m suprised so many people who already didn’t like Owata watched the short film. If you didn’t like the song, you probably won’t like a twelve minute drama in which it is featured. MY version: Cut some scenes and dialogue that can be better said with imagery/play the whole friggin’ song. I could do without the wrestler wedgie too. In lieu of the wedgie, maybe a tit could pop out. How about one band scene playing in the ring- or getting his “Jones on” with one of the wrestlers back stage

160. andrew - 9:07 pm // Wednesday, July 6, 2011

I actually found it mildly entertaining. Yes, I found it weird how the music came in randomly and then went away randomly, but i think the key is not to have been expecting a music video, or really anything at all. It helps to read the posts first and realize that all expectations need to be out the door. I see it as Billy just having some fun with 3 things he loves: music, women, wrestling, and taking the time to share these things with his fans. Frankly I haven’t loved all of Teargarden, but I see them as the free gift they are. If your grandmother gave you an ugly sweater for Christmas, you’d still have the decency to feign delight and only a complete ass would go home and rant online about what a shitty sweater they received. Not saying people have to pretend to like this, but some of the posts are a little over the top critical considering that no one has been asked to pay for this.
