The Smashing Pumpkins’ official Facebook page offered a sneak peek into the band’s archives tonight by posting a picture of an “about to be transferred” 4-track casette tape from the “Gish/Siamese era.”  According to the post, over 60 such tapes have already been transferred, presumably for the purpose of identifying material to be released over the next couple of years.

The tracklist on the tape, written in Billy Corgan’s distinctive handwriting, consists of…

  • Bury Me – 1st version
  • Prayer Music
  • Daydream
  • Final Funk Precursor to C’Mon
  • Bury Me
  • C’Mon 1
  • C’Mon 2
  • Acoustic #2
  • Semi-New Acoustic “Heal Me”

I thought it said “Funk Precursor to C’Mon”

2. Chemtrails - 8:38 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

Wonder if it’s just the Reel Time Bury Me. Glad there’s “new” old stuff, though, for sure.

3. MonteLDS - 8:38 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

I wonder if Acoustic #2 might be Honeyspider 2 (i do doubt it though)

4. Seb - 8:40 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

I’d like to hear what Prayer Music and Heal Me are about.. C’mon is good ol’ rocker; be interesting to listen to it being shaped..

5. Seb - 8:42 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

I meant “iza good”..

6. apm - 8:54 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

Yeah, looks like “funk” to me to. Billy’s i’s don’t have tails.

7. alex - 9:29 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

I think you guys are right about funk…will update.

8. MonteLDS - 9:35 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

i think you guys are wrong, i think its final

9. wombat77 - 9:48 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

Unbelievable how many comments the Facebook SP page gets sometimes. I wonder how many are hardcore fans compared to casual.

10. JCelsius - 11:30 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

@MonteLDS

While I can see it as “Final”, the phrase “Final Precursor” doesn’t really make sense. That’s sort of like saying the end of the beginning. (or the Beginning is the End is the Beginning :P) Yes, their could be multiple precursors, but I feel it is much more likely in this context to read “Funk”. I could be wrong, but this is MHO.

Anywho, this is a smart move by Billy. Nothing shuts up fans believing they have “heard it all” by showing them things they haven’t heard. Marvelous! I look forward to it tremendously.

11. JCelsius - 11:33 pm // Thursday, May 19, 2011

**also I know normally don’t do this, but it is bugging me terribly. My comment should read “Yes, THERE…” instead of “Yes, THEIR…”

and the word “by” in the second paragraph should be “like”

12. 34 - 12:03 am // Friday, May 20, 2011

Niiice.

Also, I dunno how anyone who’s been around long enough to collect every album, single, soundtrack & demo tape can -possibly- still think they’ve heard everything.

I believe Billy’s exact words in 2000 on the archives were “there’s basically an infinite supply”. No shit. :>

13. Fuzzy - 12:56 am // Friday, May 20, 2011

Man even back then billy was all about the “c’mons”

14. Dirtofgrandeur - 1:10 am // Friday, May 20, 2011

I would laugh if it’s the same “C’mon . . . ” from Zeitgeist, like with “GLOW” being semi-recycled.

15. theFred - 2:23 am // Friday, May 20, 2011
16. Jonk - 5:15 am // Friday, May 20, 2011

lol Fuzzy

17. rod steele - 6:07 am // Friday, May 20, 2011

That’s The Way is recycled as well. It’s one of the Mellon Collie demos – there’s a riff starts out as That’s The Way and then turns into Endless Summer, albeit in a different key

18. MonteLDS - 10:47 am // Friday, May 20, 2011

Am I a hard core SP fan because i known what C’Mon is for well over 15 years. or am I just old?

19. DiamondJigsaw - 12:06 pm // Friday, May 20, 2011

@Monte, I thought everybody knew that.

20. JCelsius - 12:26 pm // Friday, May 20, 2011

@Monte Maybe both, but don’t worry I’m in the same boat. (Not quite for 15 years though. :P)

21. MonteLDS - 12:41 pm // Friday, May 20, 2011

@DiamondJigsaw I thought so too. But i guess their are always new fans out there

22. chris - 12:52 pm // Friday, May 20, 2011

I’m in the “final” camp, although I thought it said funk when I first saw it. Either way, I want to hear it :)

23. daryl - 1:27 pm // Friday, May 20, 2011

So, they’re going to ‘review’ the ‘tape transfers’ to see what to ‘release’ on the ‘re-releases’? Seems cool. The Greedies, like me, just want to buy a copy of it aaall. :) :p

24. DiamondJigsaw - 2:04 pm // Friday, May 20, 2011

I think I’m alone here. I thought it said “Fume” at first. :)

25. Seb - 6:39 pm // Friday, May 20, 2011

^ Listening to too much Beck, perhaps?

26. thereitgoes - 1:53 am // Saturday, May 21, 2011

I think…I’m in love?

27. FOMs - 11:22 am // Saturday, May 21, 2011

@JCelsius **also I know normally don’t do this** (correction) also(,) I don’t normally do this.

28. FOMs - 11:25 am // Saturday, May 21, 2011

It clearly says FUML, as in “from under my love” I love that song, an oldie, but a goodie.

29. FOMs - 11:36 am // Saturday, May 21, 2011

love the old stuff. The new pumpkins just can’t be held to the same standard as from 20 years ago, it was pure, raw youth, you just can’t conjure up that energy when you’re in your 40′s. So, enjoy the new stuff for what it is and continue to love what once was and never will be again…case in point:

30. theFred - 12:34 pm // Saturday, May 21, 2011

@FOMs

what is this FUML you speak of? is it an SP song? if so, where can it be found?

i hope i’m not missing some joke you’re making…

31. I'm a well that's well! - 12:40 pm // Saturday, May 21, 2011

@theFred Clearly, he’s trolling!

32. DiamondJigsaw - 9:29 pm // Saturday, May 21, 2011

@Seb, Actually, Beck was the first thing that came to mind after I read it.

33. DiamondJigsaw - 9:30 pm // Saturday, May 21, 2011

@Seb, Although I haven’t listened to that one in ages.

34. wolé m. fayemi - 9:58 pm // Sunday, May 22, 2011

corgan IS the smashing pumpkins. old or new.

35. jam jar - 11:46 am // Monday, May 23, 2011

“fumi” and “semi new acoustic veal off”

36. thereitgoes - 1:01 pm // Monday, May 23, 2011

Final

37. Hipsters United - 4:15 pm // Tuesday, May 24, 2011

[...] Jimmy Chamberlin blog The Machine Somehow reports that Chamberlin is not involved with the Smashing Pumpkins’ archive project. [...]
