The Smashing Pumpkins have issued a press release confirming earlier reports that “Owata” will be the band’s next music video.

Directed by Robby Starbuck, the video will star professional wrestlers Cheerleader Melissa (pictured right, with Billy Corgan), Shelly Martinez, and Raven.  Corgan reports that the concept for the video is “based on brutal Japanese style of women’s wrestling.”

The press release states a belief that this will be the first time a music video has used something called the “Red Epic M” camera, which allows close-up footage to be shot with extremely high definition.  Director of Photography Greg Ephraim says, “The ‘moving image’ concept of film was invented on a bet over a horse, and I’m willing to bet that the technology encased in the Red Epic may very well be the best invention since then in the filmmaking world.”

The release date for the video is unknown.

Extreme high definition…to be viewed as blocky, pixelated YouTube video on tiny iPhones.

I am very excited, for I have very much missed music videos from The Smashing Pumpkins. I have to say that the wrestling connection is weird and I’m not looking forward to that… also Owata is such a strange choice. There are many other Teargarden tracks I would have preferred to have seen, like Freak, Tom Tom, or Lightening Strikes.

wrestling and Owata?

…we’ll see.

Dammit.

If you’re reading this Billy…

*clears throat*

Fuck yeah! \m/

I always wondered if Billy was a Shimmer fan seeing as they run out of Chicago.

You can already tell this is going to be a disaster.

7. jib - 7:43 am // Wednesday, May 11, 2011

This could work out. It’s possible. The movie The Wrestler was great. The topic can be approached with artistic merit. Or humor and whimsy. We’ll see.

Or maybe just a little fun. What’s wrong with fun? Can’t the guy have some fun? It’s his money.

Oh what a beautiful fight .. you and I (in super HD) oh yeah!

9. lala - 8:36 am // Wednesday, May 11, 2011

I agree with j[ed. i]b … the video will be alot of fun

Think “Lightning Strikes” would be a more appropriate song to play under woman wrestlers. “Owata” is so poignant and romantic. Oh well, good to finally have a new video from these guys. Still say “Superchrist” is the best one since “SIYL”.

good riddance.

13. wemustneverbeapart - 11:43 am // Wednesday, May 11, 2011

it’s either going to be something truly genius or an epic fail

14. Daniel - 11:59 am // Wednesday, May 11, 2011

well, I think the odds are stacked very much against this video being something accepted or liked much by the mainstream.

…but then, that’s usually been the case with SP. They didn’t even like SIYL, and that was one of their greatest vids.

15. jib - 3:04 pm // Wednesday, May 11, 2011

I agree with Daniel’s but….. quality or not, the mainstream doesn’t seem to care about SP’s music anymore. I never understood why SIYL never went anywhere.

It’s almost like MTV blacklisted them when they came out with Adore. You don’t give us what we want, Mellon Collie 2, so you’re done.

It just doesn’t make sense to me, unless he’s on a different wavelength that people can’t connect to, or ahead of his time possibly. It’s not that his music sucks, because that is definitely not true.

16. jib - 3:05 pm // Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Just because it’s not what people want, doesnt’ mean it’s not good.

“Why the technological upgrade? Corgan says, “With the concept we have at hand, which is based on brutal Japanese style of women’s wrestling, we’ll need to get super clear close-ups to tell the story properly.” So just to be clear: Billy Corgan requested one of the world’s rarest cameras in order to properly capture a video for a song based on the Tarot, one that will also have a concept inspired by an obscure Japanese style of women’s wrestling. Does everyone see now how he’s evolved past the point of just going back to playing “Today” with his old buddies? Okay, good.”

haha

happy? :)

To all the people who are bitching about the upcoming “Owata” video:

22. rapapapa - 3:21 pm // Thursday, May 12, 2011

@lala
they’re still in the background, and that awful intro.. it’s impossible to remove them :/. but your fixed version sounds a lot better, thanks :]

@wombat77
that video sucks, sorry bro. not because of Owata.. just.. dont know..

23. Just_Erick - 6:27 pm // Thursday, May 12, 2011

@Wombat I found that video funny as heck. The video has all these great sounding Pumpkins songs and then Owata comes in and sounds absolutely different…Such a huge contrast it really is…weird.

24. internetcliche - 6:38 pm // Thursday, May 12, 2011

SIYL video never went anywhere because it had a fat hairy man on the toilet rubbing his nipple and leering.

25. wombat77 - 4:32 am // Friday, May 13, 2011

It’s the same fat hairy guy in Borat that is in SIYL video. Remember Borat in that hotel room naked getting squashed by that guy? Best part of the movie!

26. I'm a well that's well! - 6:32 am // Friday, May 13, 2011

@internetcliche

I agree it probably didn’t help, haha.
No more seriously I think it was a question of timing. Had “Stand inside your love” been released in 1997, I’m pretty sure it would have been a huge success, really. I still think Billy’s body of work will be admired to its fair value only in the future.

27. Angel - 10:40 am // Friday, May 13, 2011

@lala Jeffs guitar definitely couldve been in the song more, but he really has this busy hands style playing thats…just not leaving any of the riffs alone lol its all over everything in that song in the original live version! Still its pretty nice to hear this way, good job
