Smashing Pumpkins tap director Robby Starbuck for unspecified new music video; band promises “Press release soon,” Starbuck promises exploded hater brains. UPDATE: Wrestlers Shelly Martinez and Melissa Anderson to be involved. UPDATE (5/9): This video is for the song “Owata” and will be filmed in Chicago.
My hater brains aren’t going to be exploded if it’s one of the ten that have already been released. OR maybe they will if one of the first 8 get a proper mix for the video.
None of the TBK songs are heavy enough to be in a wrestling video. Lol.
Yea, I agree. I’m not saying the new songs are bad, I actually really like most of them, but it’s not like they’re some heavy rock song that I’ll have my face melted to
Spoiler: They recorded and mixed Rome with Butch this week.
32 minute Gossamer video.
Music videos?? Niiiiiccce..
The first single off Oceania?
I at first thought it’s just some promo video for BC’s wrestling gig he’s doing in Chicago. But the fact the SP twitter says a press release is coming soon, it’s probably SP music related right?
Orrrr on second thought, maybe it has to do with Billy’s wrestling appearance. That would be ballz.
One of Robby’s tweet’s this afternoon says the video will be “coming out” in June, so I don’t think it’s tied to Oceania itself, but perhaps part of Billy’s strategy to build momentum for Oceania.
lol 32 minute Gossamer video
It appears this guy has done a lot of heavy modern rock videos. Wonder what that means. It’s possible that there’s already a video for an Oceania song, or it could be one with Lightning Strikes or Owata.
I’m assuming this is to help raise awareness of the Pumpkins, ahead of Oceania and the rereleases, so whatever the song is, should be a pronounced indication of what to possibly expect from SP in 2011
I hope it won’t be like GLOW v2.0
Might be the Freak video we heard about a while back
@SirRobin
It might be, but think of the hate it’ll invite, people bitching that it took almost a year since the release of Freak for a music vid to come out. More importantly, will VEVO have the YouTube stream?!
Maybe it’s a musical advertisement video for the rereleases coming this year?
Here’s hoping for first Oceania single!
Yep..needing something new. The slow release method has worn thin. And we really need a rocker!!
But if not, a Freak vid would be fine by me. Still my favorite song from TbK so far. Anyone know what guitar was used during recording? Sounds like a Baritone.
@Doop, I always figured “Freak” was recorded with an octave-down fuzz like the MXR Blue Box or with a guitar downtuned like he did during the Machina era. It’s a cool sound, nonetheless. Probably a few different ways for getting close to it.
Justin Coloma just killed himself
Freak is in drop D, but I don’t know if it’s a half step down as well as BC has been playing some things in A440 again. I haven’t played along with it, so I’m not totally sure if it’s C# or D.
I have never heard a BlueBox that can track that well. I’ve always thought it was a Bass with Fuzz, doubled with guitar, but don’t quote me on that.
Wait, was G.L.O.W (the song) about the wrestlers??? I’m losing the faith
:(

@jcoriha, I haven’t bothered to really suss it out myself either. It could very well be a fuzzed out bass w/ guitar. It could be some kind of production trickery. Could be some kind of POG or other such octave/harmony/whatever effect. The Blue Box, with the right settings, can behave itself w/ simple enough parts. But yeah, it’s a loose cannon effects-wise.
Cheerleader Mellissa? YES PLEASE.
@Misery, I think G.L.O.W. was like many of the Gish songs in that it’s not really about anything. Just sort of riff-rock, like the earliest versions of Bullet.
Off topic, but has it occured to antone that with JC out of the Pumpkins, there could be a rock band made up of ex-Pumpkins members? Iha on guitar/vox, Melissa Auf derMaur on bass, Jimmy on drums? I’m discluding D’Arcy, she has enough on her mind.
a band called “The Smashing Pumpkins” sans Bill, could actually be decent. What a thought…
Why dont they? Because they know without Bill, they have nothing.
Haha. Not saying they should, love TSP 3.0. But it would be neat. They could be the Crushing Squash.
TSP 3.0? shouldn’t it be like 4 or something, D’Arcy was replaced with Melissa, and Jimmy with Matt, so even 5.0 ;D. though it sound like bullshit SP2 SP3 SP4. its not a fu*kin software or windows platform..
Great news this. Bring back videos and normal albums yeah! I wish this director all the best for the video and I reckon it will be As Rome Burns. I gotta good feeling it will be freaking amazing.
Would love to see an SP video directed by this awesome music video maker http://www.youtube.com/user/ivanslavov I know it’s wishful thinking but you never know!
Sorry to break it guyz it’s gonna be Owata…
Ooooo, spiffy! ^^^
Ugh.
@Johnny
erm melissa is a better vocalist that James – she should sing in the slapping bumcheeks or whatever they are called
Maybe they rerecorded Owata
What’s with OWATA not being up on the SP website for download?
@Chad
Too many SP fans shot and killed themselves after hearing it.
Owata!? Could this video be worse than GLOW?
Owata, really? Well then it´s gonna be BC riding a pink unicorn and Mikey hitting the belly of a giant golden fish with his drum-sticks. Jeff and Nicole will be floating in the air on giant dazzling cucumbers and everyone will have his enthusiastic face on. In the end, all band members are going to join hands together with a group of dwarfs and dance on a clearing under the moonlight. Lots of grass-hoppers are gonna fill the screen just before the curtain falls. Wow! That´s gonna be something.
NOOOOOOOOOOO WAYYYYY!!!! Wow…that sucks
@Marek
sick video man, cant wait :)
Nice, can’t wait!
fuck, I was hoping so badly for “Freak”
Hi Misery –
The song GLOW has basically nothing to do with wrestling apart from the fact different wrestling holds were used in the video and BC relabelled it as G.L.O.W. in reference to the Glorious Ladies of Wrestling.
The song is basically about selling out your own beliefs in order to fit in: This is the ‘One Last Trip to Hell’. If you watch the video, you’ll see references to drug and s*xual experimentation, represented in a negative light. These are themes SP have investigated elsewhere (i.e.: Try, Try, Try).
And please remember this is just my opinion.
Is the song mayonaise about mayonaise? Is jellybelly about jelly beans?
@Marek
you are a douche man. stop spreading the hate. OWATA is the greatest pumpkins song evet.
@Marek
you are a douche man. stop spreading the hate. OWATA is the greatest pumpkins song ever.
Owata is crap. BC can do way better than this.
@lala
haha Owata is the worst thing i have ever written. its worse than one of iha’s songs.
@Chemtrails
you dont like synth and that is OK, but if a song has synth on it, it doesnt mean it is a bad song
OWATA rocks!!!
I said nothing about synth.
Adore synths rocks, thats the way my love is, stellar synths rocks. owata synths- sucks. no soul
of course, it’s just my opinion.
“no soul” comment just doesnt have any sense at all. justin biber music has no soul, pumpkins music has soul. ok? if you dont like it cause it is a “happy” song then go listen to Marduk
When I think of/listen to Owata, it does does not bring to mind images of wrestling. Billy Corgan is an absolute artistic genius, but his love of wrestling perplexes me to no end.
@Graves
Is Beautiful about something being beautiful?
Is For Martha for Martha?
Is Song for a Son a song for a son?
Is Tonight, Tonight about tonight?
Is Today about Today?
If they’re making a video of Owata, what TV Stations would actually rotate the video?
I mean, (In the UK) the only station it would fit in with is Q, and maybe NME, if the video’s arty.
Seriously, a video for Owata?? I agree that Billy picks the wrong songs to promote…Dates back to Everlasting Gaze over SIYL…Then Walking Shade over Mina Loy…But this is the worst.. WWMM & Owata over Freak & Tom Tom..We are about to witness an embarassment to the Teargarden project, despite the fact that the WWMM live choir performance was horrific
Quick Question: On the NME site, they’ve posted a link to download Owata as part of the free mp3 section, but said there’s been 12 releases. Are the B-Sides being counted as part of the final tracklisting of TBK, or are they being fools?
@Cain – My 33 minute Gossamer video from Asgeville residency – http://www.archive.org/details/GossamerSmashingPumpkinsAsheville732007
@rapapapa STELLLAAAARRRR!!!!
How’s my Brando?
@Kisses and Noise
I actually would like to see this released as the official video.
Gosh…wrestling and “Owata”??? That doesn’t seem to fit…
I would love to see videos like “Walking Shade” or “The End Is The Beginning Is The End”, with Billy performing in nice outfits!
LALA: I forgot to mention that Billy is going to have golden locks in the video. Lots of golden lock, actually:). Now, won´t that be woth seeing? Most definitely. Otherwise not. Oh, it´s a bloody shame I´ve become allergic to people named Starbuck. Now, I suggest you listen to a song by The Creatures in order to understand what an organic approach to music really is.
Drums and the vocals… all perfectly sufficient to make great songs.
@Marek No hate, but if you don’t like Teargarden, why do you post here? The site artwork is EP 1.
Maybe the wrestling ladies are just involved in the video? That doesn’t marry it to being about wrestling.
Also, to whomever posted that G.L.O.W. thing, that’s a neat tae on the song. Ihad no idea about the Glorious Ladies of Wrestling refrence :)
Haha we were all like “this guy who directs hard rock videos is doing the video, but if it’s Freak I don’t think it’s hard enough”. Funny that it turned out to be pretty pretty pony Owata.
I think most of us are used to Owata, but I personally thought the song deserves a push. It’s a very nice summer-y song, but we’ll see how the video is.
I really get into wrestling every ten years for a couple of years. It’s basically these extreme personalities going out and establishing a certain identity in a way that’s very entertaining. Plus, WWE is pretty genius at marketing.
Johnny: It´s not because of hatred or because I enjoy being mischievous. I really don´t. I guess it´s all because of the huge disappointment this project has been to me so far. When it was announced and we all were waiting for the first song to come out, I felt so excited and enthusiastic. Now I don´t. I´ve lost the beautiful feeling of truly expecting something great and believing in it too. I like stitch, freak and tom tom, even spangled – they are great songs, but the rest just kills it for me, and especially owata as the final song. And the news that there is going to be a video for owata sounds just bizzare to me. I´ll hang around till Oceania, that´ll be the milestone for me. Until then I´ll wait. This band gave mo so much throughout the years and I´d like to give them another chance. If the upcoming album means another disappointment to me, then there will be no sense in pursuing SP any longer as a fan.
Owata rocks, you can’t unlock it!
@Marek I think you’re missing the point. it’s not about you giving a chance to the band, but rather the other way round. Corgan had every reason to disband in 2000, to not bring it back in 2007 (all the hatred because of “no darcy and james”) and finally leaving it, after Jimmy became uninterested in 2009. Despite all of that he continued to push forward, he wrote 50+ songs, recreated the band from the scrap, made a really successful tour, and finally, he’s releasing all the new music for free for everyone. that’s something that just doesn’t happen in this business, it doesn’t. it took extraordinary amount of devotion and faith for Corgan to pursue on his journey, to bring world once again The Smashing Pumpkins. to be able to play in front of people live saving music like Today, or masterpieces like Stumbleine etc. you name the song. he went even further than that, and he wrote and released one of his best music in the decade; because for me, Freak, Spangled and Astral Planes are in that book. he never gave it up on you, on pumpkins fans, despite money, negativity, members leaving the band so, when I see someone who goes “I’m going to give Corgan one last chance with Oceania” I’m really shocked. I mean, who are you to give an artist who wrote around 800 songs during his career a “last chance”? have you ever written even one?
if you’re not satisfied with TbK, I’m ok with that, everyone should have their own opinion; but when you’re trying to prove to everyone that new stuff is a disappointment and that Corgan “lost it” somethings wrong because like you said “they gave you so much throughout the years” – for that, to me, you’re due to him at least some respect.
once again, if you don’t like the new stuff, no one holds you here, really. I just don’t understand all this negativity; why it must be brought up under basically every new post.
An interesting interpretation. You mustn´t take it at face-value though. “They gave me so much” only because I was willing to find it. None of the members of the band, past and present, did anything for me. BC has never wrote any of his songs for me, he writes music because he feels the need to do so just like I create what I create (no, not songs or not exactly) just because I have an urgent need that must be fulfilled – only because of my momentary obssession. I don´t owe him anything or not in that sense of the word anyway. You know what they say – role-models are meant to let you down in the end. I know why people like you don´t understand “the negativity” as you tend to call it, you can´t.
