Critics shut ‘Teargarden’ songs out of 2010 Pazz & Jop singles poll 9:57 pm // Tuesday, January 18, 2011

None of the seven songs released last year by the Smashing Pumpkins was mentioned by any of the over 700 music critics who participated in the annual Village Voice Pazz & Jop singles poll. Some 2,086 songs received at least one mention, among them Cee Lo Green’s smash “Fuck You!” (tops with 187 mentions) and a United Parcel Service jingle.

The Pumpkins have received a grand total of two mentions over the four “Pazz & Jop” singles polls conducted since the band reformed in 2007, neither coming in the last three years.

That is strange. Hard to imagine that a band like this (uh… not that word again) wouldn’t pop up in the polls.

2. Johnny - 10:13 pm // Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Not really too suprising. Alt. rock like the Pumpkins isn’t part of the hip scene anymore. Not to say they don’t still produce excellent music, Tom Tom beats the hell out of most of the garbage on that list in my opinion. But it’s not the current flavor. If only people knew that only a guitarist and drummer recorded all the tracks, they could be as cool as the Black Keys! Alas.

3. internetcliche - 10:19 pm // Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Meanwhile, a song R.E.M. released in 2008 is on the list! (Living Well Is The Best Revenge)

4. thereitgoes - 11:30 pm // Tuesday, January 18, 2011

The pressure is definitely on this year!! I’ve always found the band works best in these circumstances – bring it Billy!

5. takerdemon - 4:24 am // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

@thereitgoes

Exactly! I echo those sentiments exactly.

Being honest, i couldn’t care less whether they’re on some critic list or not. If the band is functioning and putting out interesting work then I’m more than happy, I don’t think they need approval from the critics at this stage.

6. rhinowing - 6:31 am // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

perhaps they’d get more press attention if billy didn’t attempt to alienate everyone in the world…or if the songs were any good

7. Is he one? - 8:08 am // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

I don’t care about those critics either, got used to it.
Only thing that matters to me is that it doesn’t discourage Billy to keep on going and write music! (With SP or not but hopefully under the band name)

8. jjb - 10:24 am // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Apparently Billy has completely lost it, except when Courtney sings his songs

9. Josh James - 12:01 pm // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

I don’t think he really cares about this sort of validation. I don’t think he needs critics flogging the band, and stating the obvious. Most of these critics are just saying hey this is cool, so this makes me cool too, right…? This is their own form of validation. The only thing Billy needs at this point is for people with their own opinions to comment. Good or bad, so long as it’s constructive.

Agreed with Thereitgoes and Taker, I think Billy works best when theirs this kind of pressure. I am incredible excited for 2011.

12. Ziggy - 6:42 pm // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Not surprised. But who cares? SP dont need critic recognition.

13. darkharlequin - 7:48 pm // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Makes me wonder how many songs from those lists were released for free or broke away from the traditional industry model. Not many (if any) would be my guess.

14. Dr. Acula - 8:54 pm // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

There are still music critics?

15. Matt Petherbridge - 9:53 pm // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Remember when Billy Corgan had Facebook? http://bmamag.com/articles/features/20110118-billy-corgan/

stop it.

17. CyanWinters - 11:57 pm // Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Evidently, “haters” like me made him cut and run. :x

18. lala - 5:50 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

@hipstersunited

maybe this is the reason:

http://bit.ly/erNsu9+

only 17 people have downloaded “tom tom” in the last week.

19. fuzzy - 7:31 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

Its only because this whole teargarden project has been horribly horribly promoted. You think with a manager like Irving Azoff they’d have it covered.

When I picked up the Solstice bare E.P. at Hmv a little while ago the guy was like what?! whats this!? I didn’t know the Pumpkins had new music out! and the other chick behind the till was just as surprised.

I mean Billy should be rocking all the late night shows and doing the whole shebang to promote this thing.

20. fuzzy - 7:32 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

Also is this even really newsworthy? I’m pretty sure us readers couldn’t care any less…

21. rapapapa - 7:39 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

@darkharlequin
so your point is..? if songs are free, it doesn’t mean they’re good.

22. lala - 7:41 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

@fuzzy

i agree with you. billy should be alot more promoting teargarden on TV shows … but after the debacle of widow wake my mind on leno … it is hard to imagine that he will be performing soon.

23. THE FREAK - 9:39 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

He tried to promote on the vampire diaries and he performed spangled on that french tv show… the songs just arent good enough yet. dont get me wrong I love them, but casual rock fans prob wont find new sp listenable

24. Is he one? - 9:47 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

Widow on Leno was totally cool!!

25. Dystopic - 11:51 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

Don’t you think if avenues were available for Billy to promote the band more heavily, he would do it? There’s a reason the majority of the ink the band was getting was coming out of urban weeklies. There’s just not a lot of interest anymore — which ties into the lack of critical reception. And you’re kidding yourself if you think this doesn’t matter to Billy.

26. jjb - 11:52 am // Thursday, January 20, 2011

^ +1

27. lala - 12:03 pm // Thursday, January 20, 2011

@Dystopic

interest is created and for creating interest you NEED MONEY, teargarden is FREE, tours are losing money = no money for creating interest

with real money marketing Pumpkins could be the biggest rock band in the world. do you think without money fucking Nickelback would be so big? NO

@is he one?

widow sucked on leno … did you forget that group of weird people doing back vocals? it was awful (but still better then the studio version)

28. Is he one? - 12:28 pm // Thursday, January 20, 2011

@lala
It’s not my opinion. And yes I remember!
Matter of taste!

29. Is he one? - 12:29 pm // Thursday, January 20, 2011

Oh and lala I agree with your comment to “Dystopic”.

30. J - 2:31 pm // Thursday, January 20, 2011

31. darkharlequin - 9:32 pm // Thursday, January 20, 2011

@rapapapa – I think I made my point clear but well done shoehorning in a shot at the band.

32. rapapapa - 9:35 am // Saturday, January 22, 2011

think again.
