Courtesy of novice taper (and former HU reader) Lapis, here are the opening and closing numbers from yesterday’s Smashing Pumpkins concert (setlist, from spfc.org) on the Strip in Hollywood:
“Astral Planes”
“Zero”
way to recording person! sounds great ;)
I like this version of Zero-bout time he makes it decent
awesome new ending to zero. audio sounds great. where can i DL the rest of the show?
Zero was the best. But 1979 was very cool. The audio is great
who played solo on Zero? Billy or Jeff?
so with the setlist you tweeted Monte, along with Cundinama, there were no changes to the setlist was there? Even though on the facebook interview Billy talked about trying to think up a setlist for ssmf.
The end solo sounded like Jeff Shredder to me — absolutely incendiary, loved it. I think Billy’s vocals are especially good here, but some of Mike’s fills are way too sloppy.
yeah, the improvisated solo at the end sounds like Jeff, but what about the main solo?
I just got the reference in this site name. Clever!!!
I think the main solo was Jeff too — I’ve seen videos of him playing it in earlier August shows this year (e.g. Singapore).
Jeff has played the Zero and SIYL solos since around the time of the Asheville/Fillmore residencies — I recall being really annoyed by the fact that Billy was playing them in the early 07 shows.
Also, full recording is here, courtesy of Diss N Chanted: http://forums.netphoria.org/smashing-pumpkins-music-trading-post/171190-08-27-2010-sunset-strip-music-festival-west-hollywood-ca.html
I got the full show too. It should be up soon. :)
Awesome ending on Zero!
@ddb and @rhinowing
thanks. Jeff’s good.
The lead guitar is all Shredder. Billy doesn’t use heavy effects live.
SIYL solo is Billy with lots of Delay.
Both the Whammy solo, and the ending halftime solos on Zero are Jeff.
One of the best SP I have seen. They were going to play Gossamer instead of Zero, but it got changed at the last min
The standouts for me were 1979, Eye, Freak, and Zero. United States I could not believe that the crowd reacted to as well as they did, the people around me were really impressed, especially the non-SP fans. I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many non-SP fans be so impressed by Billy’s work (the whole set blew many away) since Gish era to be honest.
Great recording! Honestly one of the best I’ve heard of Zero.
Hello Everyone. I’m new here but posted to say the Sunset Strip was FRIED last night by our favorite band. My favorite was by far As Rome Burns that song is smokin’ live and they were very precise with its execution. My first time seeing Nicole and Mike, both did very well. Mike had an awesome solo and displayed one stick to the crowd while he smashed his kit to death with the other. Nicole looked like she was taking a walk in the park and played notably well on Ava Adore. The place was packed and everyone was enjoying having their faces melted off. The only downer was at the end, it was a weak effort from the crowd to call for an encore. I was actually surprised they came back out. Wish I had more details but it was over in a flash.
Wow this sounded great! It seems everyone’s finding their role in the band and Billy is sounding better than ever!! Definitely down with the new SP…Cheers!
Holy God! has anyone heard United States from this show? Its way crazier then when i saw it at the Metro. Mike absolutely kills it in this new breakdown in the middle. Plays it better than Jimmy himself. Im gunna have to say it now, im sorry, but Mike will eventually be better then Jimmy.
Yeah but Can he write drum parts as well as Jimmy? That is the million dollar question. So far he hasn’t come close
The “new breakdown” in the middle is Moby Dick by Led Zeppelin, with a nod to the way Zep used this song to showcase John Bonham. Surprised no one else has mentioned this. It’s pretty cool.
Jimmy’s the one who wrote the goddamn drum part to United States. Weird to suggest someone else is “better” at it. (Especially when it’s Moby Dick, not U.S.).
There are tons of drummers who can play a bunch of fast triplet variations like what you hear on this recording.
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha billy at the end of zero “SEE YA”
Wow gotta luv that ending on Zero. WooH! The audio sounds flipping great. Will definitely download this gig. Geez I really hope they add some new tour dates soon to include either Australia or New Zealand. I have seen them only twice in 1996 and 2008 and really wanna see them again. I’m waiting patiently SP, please come back down under!
Zero is still way too fast for me. I like the slower version as you can really dig the guitar riff then. Same goes for BWBW.
full show plox D: need moar
Agree with most of the comments here — SSMF energy was great. The crowd, the band, everything! With the small venues they’ve been playing this tour, it was awesome to see the new energy trasnlate to a bigger crowd, and for them to embrace it! Definitely some moments where it seemed like the 90′s, had i closed my eyes. :-)
Some good pictures from SSMF here.
lapis — wish i knew you were gonna be there! can’t wait to hear your full recording!
Holy shit. Zero was face melting here!
Here’s the full show. :) http://www.archive.org/details/tsp2010-08-28.dab.flac16
wow sounds amazing
Thank you very much Lapis!
(I quote the “rock and rooool, fu*k yeah” after As Rome Burns! \m/>.<\m/)
