HU Podcast #66: Back to the Metro 7:26 pm // Thursday, August 12, 2010
Posted by chris in podcast, tour.trackback
As promised, here is part 2 of last week’s podcast with Jill and Davin. As this was recorded a few weeks ago, we don’t talk about the Asian leg of the tour, but Davin does give us reviews of Pittsburgh and the Metro benefit, and we dissect one of Billy’s interesting self-assessments from a uStream chat.
Listen to the whole show (1:04:51)
(download)(iTunes)
Panelists
-Chris, Jill, and special guest Davin
Topics
-Davin’s review of the Pittsburgh soundcheck and show. Plus, we find out that the Pumpkins aren’t the only band with a Ron Roesing-type figure. (32:05)
-Davin reports on Billy’s return to the Cabaret Metro, and we find out exactly how one conducts an auction during a rock show. (13:52)
-In a recent uStream chat, Billy discussed his recent approach to releases as a snapshot in time of where he is musically rather than a collection of the best songs he’s written. We discuss whether this approach has been evident in the past. Plus, we talk timing for the next Teargarden track, and I make my obscure reference of the week. (14:10)
Song of the Week
-Bleeding the Orchid, New York, NY July 26, 2010
Agree totally- 99 Floors and Pennies- two of my all time favorites!
I AM NOT ALONE!!!!!!
Holy crap, you’ve already started listening? :)
@chris Bored I guess.
I love both those songs.
Another big Pennies fan here
I have some pics from the metro show for anybody who cares. It was cool to see billy break out some of the old guitars again.

…and the auction was technically not during the show. they auctioned stuff off before SP took the stage. They played the entire show and the encore (1979), after which they auctioned off the guitar. the show was over, people chanted for one more song, so they played gossamer.

my speculations about EP2. So far we have Freak. Billy said that at the moment he has 3 fully recorded songs, which are ready to be released. So what are the other three songs? We know that Mark Tullin tweeted that they finished recording the song about winter etc. And Kristin (the photographer) said that My Love is Winter is very beautiful to her etc.. So my guess that now we have two songs on ep2 – Freak & My Love Is Winter. Now other two. Some of you people should know that Kerry Brown tweeted that he is mixing Tom Tom and hes gonna blow the speakers while mixing.. But Billy said that it is yet to be recorded. But I think that he just wants to keep as surprised, but its hard, because there is even a hint, that this song is a part of EP2, the lyric, which is the same as the name of the EP2 – The Solstice Bare. So we have three songs – Freak, My Love Is Winter and Tom Tom. One is released, other three are recorded, other two are probably Tom Tom and Winter song. SO the last, third recorded song is a mistery to me. When the Cocks Crow? Make it Happen? Or totally new song?
so IMO Ep2:
1. Freak
2. New song (unknown to us) or When the Cocks Crow
3. Tom Tom
4. My Love Is Winter
though now I think he will release My Love Is Winter, but it would be logic, that he would keep it for winter. and Tom Tom for autumn (theres a lyric which mentions autumn). so maybe new song or when the cocks crow? we’ll see.
Didn’t Billy say that the songs they were playing during the soundchecks were songs that hadn’t been recorded yet? As for Tom Tom it could very well be that it won’t be on The Solstice Bare. Neither Zeitgeist or Siamese Dream were on their respective albums.
The way I see it the next 3 songs could be pretty much anything, but Owata and As Rome Burns seem more likely than anything since they have been played consistently throughout the tour. I don’t listen to new stuff before it’s released, so everything is new to me, but I’d love to hear a song or two that are brand new to everyone so there’s no comparison to how the live version was better, it was better with Jimmy, it was better with kazoos when I was high etc.
I’m extremely happy that Billy is keeping the song titles close to his chest this go around, I like being surprised. What’s the point of releasing a track at a time if everyone knows weeks or months in advance what’s coming, especially when almost everyone has heard the songs in some form or another already?
I think we need to start a “Pennies” petition to Billy.
Zeitgeist was, but not on the main version. “Didn’t Billy say that the songs they were playing during the soundchecks were songs that hadn’t been recorded yet?” Well you are right in a way. He said that the songs that they played during soundchecks are yet to be recorded or are recorded and ready to be released. But Im pretty sure that Zen Baby and Quasar are not recorded, while Winter song is. As Rome Burns? i doubt.. Owata.. hm.. could be. Though BC said that Ep2 is 100% him and Byrne. Nicole created bassline for owata.. but it is possible that Billy recorded that bassline, not Nicole.. Im 70% sure, that my tracklist is +- correct. dont know about the order of songs. My Love Is Winter and Tom Tom PROBABLY will be on EP2..the third song is a mistery to me though. But if owata and As Rome Burns is recorded, fine with me. to be honest I would like that they would record Rome for EP3 or 4, when all of them will record (if they will, you never know what Bill will decide). Maybe they will only work on demos, like they did so far on lonely is the name.
maybe he is keeping As Rome Burns for the heavier EP.. or maybe he will release it only in 2012;D. I hope not.
But I’ll stick with these songs being on EP2 – Freak, My Love Is Winter, Tom Tom and the fourth (I guess When The Cocks Crow, Make it Happen or Emerald Green)..
thats just my opinion. and for eveyrone – dont be so gullible about tom tom. billy lied that its not recorded. im sure.
I think the ‘moment in time’ thing applies to the whole TAFH box set- maybe not in terms of being all written in the same month or whatever(Mouths of Babes, e.g., was played at the Double Door well before the Zero EP came out), but at least stylistically they all fit together within each single/EP. I guess it depends on how narrowly you define ‘moment’.
And yes, Pennies rules.
‘my moleasskiss to your precious lips’… heh
