HU Podcast #62: Poll Results 5:33 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

Posted by chris in podcast, regression analysis.
trackback

This past weekend I contacted my fellow podcasters with the intention of doing a short, one-topic podcast about the results of the recent poll of your favorite Billy Corgan-penned songs post-revival.  I figured we’d argue about some songs, make fun of each others’ tastes, and call it a night.  Well 40-some-odd minutes, a regression analysis, and discussion on almost every song later, Jason talked me into tacking a 35-minute song onto the end as the Song of the Week.  So don’t be too alarmed by the staggering length and lack of broken-up segments.

Which of us was a total crowd-follower and didn’t vote for any song below Starz?  Who had such discriminating taste that they only voted for 5 songs?  Who voted for almost the entirety of American Gothic?  Who admitted to kind of liking, but not voting for, Choose to Choose Love?  Tune in to find out, and view the full poll results below the jump.

the 20th anniversary version of gossamer is my favorite.. they got it right there.

surprised people like tarantula. not a fan personally.

2. lemonscure - 6:28 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

Peace+Love is indeed a great song.

3. Elia5 - 6:37 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

Ma Belle should so be higher on that list than As Rome Burns

4. AmazingHat - 7:48 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

Spreadsheet of the data analysis?

5. Kirk the Pug - 8:13 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

This probably isn’t the right place to do it, but I wanted to let jjb know that the new Arcade Fire album is going to have 8(!) different covers, and Tom Breihan has this to say about it:
“And if you really love Arcade Fire, you should start saving up right now.”

Sorry to the rest of y’all for fueling jjb’s anti-Pitchfork fire ;)

6. gyang333 - 9:37 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

mini-podcast? ahaha it’s more than an hour long….

7. matt - 10:25 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

Kirk the Pug: i read that earlier today and because I am so bitter about Pitchforks attitude towards Billy I immediately thought of the story they wrote in 2007 when it was announced that there would be 4 versions of Zeitgeist. The picture they used was a dollar bill with Bilys face on it and his “message” to fans was FUCK YOU. But I guess Arcade Fire is within their right to do 8 covers-even though its the same album 8 times over

8. Adam - 10:28 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

so pitchfork is inconsistent in their view points.. but one thing is for sure, they consistently hate billy corgan.

9. matt - 11:25 pm // Thursday, June 24, 2010

only because it makes them look cool-don’t forget it

10. afrobutterfly - 1:46 am // Friday, June 25, 2010

I was waiting for the Jimmy Regression… Do we just assume that everybody who’s still here is over his departure?

And I’ve always liked “(Come On) Let’s Go.” Surprised to hear of its universal panning.

11. Steve - 2:52 am // Friday, June 25, 2010

not to get into this pitchfork thing… but a lot of people hate billy corgan, and not just because it’s cool. but it’s almost always unjustified and ill-considered.

Also, we still are without a studio “Gossamer”, “99 Floors”, “As Rome Burns”, “Peace + Love”, and “Owata”… It might be nice to have a studio cut of these… and, wheres the love for the March Hare? Fools!

12. Steve - 3:22 am // Friday, June 25, 2010

oh great job on the poll btw… had a lot of fun with this podcast.

13. Steve - 4:20 am // Friday, June 25, 2010

oh and jason, doomsday clock has a “come on” as well, if we’re counting. someone needs to do a poll with just the “come on” and “la la” songs.

14. Woody - 8:37 am // Friday, June 25, 2010

can’t believe not one of the four of you like, let alone love, stellar. i know that chris for one has talked about the importance of lyrics in his appreciation of SP songs, making the stellar exclusion more surprising to me. seriously, listen to it and read the lyrics. the music is killer too: the guitar textures, jimmy’s sympathetic drums… i could go on for ever…. so much love for that song

15. lemonscure - 9:11 am // Friday, June 25, 2010

agree with Woody.

16. purple pumpkin - 10:43 am // Friday, June 25, 2010

You guys do such a great job! a BIG thanks!! Neverlost is definitely in my top 3.

17. chris - 11:44 am // Friday, June 25, 2010

@Woody: I’ll give it another shot and pay more attention to the lyrics.

18. lemonscure - 12:49 pm // Friday, June 25, 2010

Chrics, here’s a nice live version of ‘Stellar’ :)

this song to me is very beautiful, winterish, snowy :D. brilliant. one of the best SP songs since reunion.

19. jjb - 3:44 pm // Friday, June 25, 2010

/just finished listening to the podcast-ending song

20. Gv - 3:53 pm // Friday, June 25, 2010

It warms my heart to think that maybe, just maybe, these poll results will help us get a studio release for songs like “Gossamer” and “As Rome Burns.”

Regarding Pitchfork… They hate Billy Corgan because he represents a threat to their fiefdom. They want to be the gatekeepers. They want a world in which music journalists make and break careers. Billy Corgan is a clear example of an artist who succeeded and who continues to succeed on the basis of his own raw talent, postmodern English-majors be damned. The writers at Pitchfork can’t have the most talented artists directly influencing the culture – it’s a direct threat to the journos’ status.

21. Gv - 3:58 pm // Friday, June 25, 2010

People like that really exist – people who aren’t interested in adding beauty to the world but rather enhancing their own power by obtaining a gatekeeper role. I know a young man whose career goal is to become the person who decides which artists in our city receive taxpayer funding.

22. chris - 4:25 pm // Friday, June 25, 2010

@jjb: Did you start right after I posted the podcast?

23. fyjhk - 11:14 pm // Friday, June 25, 2010

The Trip = Cheese City. It gives me douche chills.

24. Adam - 11:23 pm // Friday, June 25, 2010

@Gv what an angry world you live in.

25. Drevpile - 7:49 am // Saturday, June 26, 2010

GV, Gossamer or As Rome Burns without JC – spell epic fail.

26. AmazingHat - 5:10 pm // Saturday, June 26, 2010

Regardless of the poll results, I think its fair to say that (at least IMO) there have been a wealth of fantastic songs written since the revival. I genuinely enjoy the vast majority of the songs above.

27. reggaeluv2000 - 10:16 am // Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Sweet I voted for Gossamer :P

and isn’t Tarantula pronounced tare-an-tooluh??

best part of the show..listening to Gossamer at the end :P

28. Pumpkins making it happen with hits, new songs, and “Gossamer” « Hipsters United - 4:40 pm // Wednesday, July 7, 2010

29. The Great Pumpkin - 4:46 pm // Wednesday, July 7, 2010

I actually was never into Gossamer at all and would always skip it. But, this poll forced me to go back and give it another chance. It’s definitely growing on me as I’m a sucker for epic songs like that.

I have listened to Stellar several times and it just doesn’t grab me.

As Rome Burns is freaking incredible but…. can we please just bring JC back for the studio version??? It won’t be the same without him. :(

30. Jacob - 5:58 pm // Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Listening to Gossamer gave me a headache. That song is harder to endure than Pastichio Medley is.
