Posted by chris in courtney love, podcast, television.
trackback

We’re between Teargarden songs, but that doesn’t leave us short of things to talk about.  From the Strawberry Choir to the Ultimate-Guitar.com interview, with a bit of Courtney Love talk in the middle to the chagrin of Jill, we took a look at the news of the past two weeks.

Listen to the whole show (42:49)

(download)(iTunes)

This week’s topics:

Panelists
-Chris, Jason, Jill, and Andrew

-The band performs on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  Everybody was talking about the choir instead of the performance, why would Billy bring in such a distracting element?  Plus, we comment on Mark Tulin’s haberdashery and touch on the fascination with the supporting players that Billy surrounds himself with.  (16:13)

-Billy and Courtney Love sharpen their knives and take their fight public.  Why does Billy keep making public comments that tarnish his image? (13:19)

-Billy is interviewed by ultimate-guitar.com, and he’s already plugging the next Teargarden EP before the first goes on sale.  (8:28)

I love Tuesdays…

2. purple pumpkin - 8:26 pm // Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Love that version of WWMM!

3. jillysp - 10:58 pm // Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Quick! Someone help! Leno is actually choking on one of his bad jokes in that picture!

4. StuckInVain - 12:04 am // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Courtney and Billy definitely deserve one another.
I hope they patch things up.

Aside:
Was Courtney taking credit for the songs, or rather using them after Billy had retracted his permission? He’s credited on the album as songwriter, right?

5. halo - 12:22 am // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Didn’t Linda post something on the o-board explaining how the performance came about? The last time I saw billy dressed normally was spirits and zwan. I did like the TFE army look, but I didn’t like the sun god look he had going the last tour. The “artful dodger” term seems fitting, it looks very British with his cap and Alexander McQueen clothes.

To be fair, though it doesn’t excuse it, Courtney said she had an affair with Gavin in the first 8 months of him dating Gwen – back in 1996 – not when Gavin and Gwen got married. Courtney is Machiavelli-like but Billy is quite similar to her personality too, he does do the same things. The worst aspects of their personalities are similar, though, I think Billy has a kindness to him that Courtney lacks.

Great points about the ultimate-guitar interview.

Craig Ferguson is an amazing late night host. Thats all i have to say. Oh and Jay Leno’s face bugs me.

7. purple pumpkin - 6:57 pm // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

CoCo all the way!

Do we even know what Jeff has contributed to SP? I’m a fan but I’d like to know more about him. Love the podcasts! I think one of you guys sounds like Billy. jk

8. chris - 8:07 pm // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

re: Jeff’s contributions, up until now it’s just been the live shows, as this is the first we’ve heard of him taking part in any studio recording AFAIK.

9. gyang333 - 8:09 pm // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

I think why everyone’s such a fan of Jeff is because with Jimmy gone, his return marks some sort of semblance to the Pumpkins before 2009.

And what’s with everyone bashing Leno and siding with Conan? If all these fans came out of the woodwork before he got canceled, maybe his ratings would have been good enough to please NBC brass.

10. purple pumpkin - 8:19 pm // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Long time Conan fan here. What do you mean by “everyone”? Me and Jill? lol

I asked about Jeff because I didn;t know if he helped on some of the residency songs. I’d like to hear some of his own stuff sometime.

11. Conan sucks and everyone else does tooo - 8:50 pm // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

People remember Carson like he was their cherished Grandpa, but if you could go back and watch a full hour it wouldn’t be so great. Celebrities promote things, predictable jokes are told, and corny gags are acted out. Commercials.

I don’t know why I feel the need to type it out on this forum, but I am truly compelled. Late night tv is boring!!!!!!! Ah! I don’t like any of them! I don’t want to see celebrities trying to promote stuff ever- not in daytime, primetime, or late night!

12. BitterT - 9:12 pm // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

i dont like leno cuz he looks like a skunk. plus conan is a “super chill bro”

13. purple pumpkin - 10:44 pm // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

LOL, you felt “truly compelled”. Doesn’t take much I guess.

14. internetcliche - 11:11 pm // Wednesday, May 5, 2010

1) I think the Jeff love is because he’s a nice guy and with all the instability of member lineups it’s comforting to have something familiar. Oooh here comes Jeff from above!

2) After the Spirits in the Sky tour, didn’t someone (Billy? Kerry?) say that the songs played were in the ‘b list’? Not surprising that Billy has better stuff coming, but also surprising he opened with b songs.

15. redmond - 6:34 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

Who puts their second rate songs at the beginning of the album?

16. chaja - 8:12 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

I do.

17. chaja - 8:14 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

I do..

18. redmond - 9:30 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

Yeah, that makes sense. “This is my new epic 44 track album that will kickstart my band’s comeback – I think I’ll lead off with these 4 second rate songs.”

Also – “spirits in the sky tour was just the second rate material” sounds like marketing talk after a less than stellar reaction to the music.

19. redmond - 9:33 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

Let’s look at the first track on the previous SP albums

I Am One
Cherub Rock
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (really just an extended piano intro to ‘Tonight Tonight’)
To Sheila
The Everlasting Gaze

These are the b-level songs too right?

20. chaja - 9:35 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

redmond whats the point in discussing this?m IT WONT change anything. if you dont like the first fours songs, wait for another, if again you wont like ‘em, wait for another batch. 44 songs are huge. there are only 4 at the moment.

21. Bigpumpkins - 9:38 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

Anyway, if Freak, Tom Tom, When the Cocks crow, Owata and As Rome Burns are released, then it’s true that the best is to come.

Why some comparison to the past albums again.

In the future you will look back to A Song for a son(The actual first song on the album) the same way I bet.

22. purple pumpkin - 10:52 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

I love the first EP! If these songs are only b material, I’m even more excited for what’s to come! Even Billy’s b,c,d,e material is better than most of the stuff I’ve heard from other bands. What do you expect him to say about the next few songs? Just because he started TbK with these so called sub-par songs doesn’t mean anything whatsoever. In a year or so, I’m sure people listening back on the first EP will appreciate it even more.
I was afraid people would begin losing patience while they waited 6 weeks b/t songs. It’s gonna be a long journey with many ups and downs, just enjoy the trip.

23. skullivan - 11:26 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

Billy said at one point that he recorded the ‘Spirits’ songs because they were fresher in his mind having just come off the tour. Likewise, the second EP seems likely to feature at least two songs from the Backwards Clock Society show. When you’re doing a 44-track album, one track at a time, is it really in your best interest to “front load” your very best material? It’s a mistake to look at this album as if it’s a traditional release.

Besides, reaction to the Spirits songs was very positive, there’d be no reason for him to spin it for damage control. It was more, “well if you like these, you ain’t heard nothing yet”.

24. Jericho - 11:57 am // Thursday, May 6, 2010

when did he said all this stuff? and about the b-sides. when did he said all this? have you recorded any video proof?

25. jjb - 12:31 pm // Thursday, May 6, 2010

Skullivan: “Billy said at one point that he recorded the ‘Spirits’ songs because they were fresher in his mind having just come off the tour.”

Did he? I remember that I said on a podcast that it made sense to me that he might feel this way, but I don’t remember seeing that he himself said it.

26. skullivan - 8:44 pm // Thursday, May 6, 2010

I don’t listen to the podcasts so I wouldn’t have gotten it from there, but I couldn’t specifically say where I read/heard it. Maybe the Steve Jones interview? It’s a shame you can’t parse videos by keywords lol.

27. Jericho - 1:34 am // Friday, May 7, 2010

its a shame you cant remember where did yuou hear this stuff. LOL at you.

28. Adam - 8:47 am // Friday, May 7, 2010

didn’t i get shit a couple weeks back for not backing up my statements up without proof, contributing negatively to the so called ‘higher discourse’ here? then a panelist claims courtney claims she had an affair with gavin WHILE he was married to Gwen?

for the record, she never said she slept with him while he was married. nor do i recall her saying she slept with him while he was dating Gwen, but I may be wrong.

here’s the interview on stern, the gavin bit may be in the other 6 clips, but here is the section where she speaks about billy. and keep in mind, howard is the kind of host that likes to egg information out of his guests, so it’s not like courtney is the only celebrity out there without some sort of filter.

also, if you don’t want to be subjected to ‘reading this crap,’ don’t read it.

29. Adam - 8:56 am // Friday, May 7, 2010

update: the gavin bit is in the above clip. enjoy.

30. Adam - 9:00 am // Friday, May 7, 2010

yeah im wrong, while he was with gwen, but she didnt say while he was married. but they married in 2002, when they both seemed to settle and courtney was starting her career as a washed up has been.

31. Bigpumpkins - 9:06 am // Friday, May 7, 2010

Booooooooring.

32. chaja - 9:08 am // Friday, May 7, 2010

no one cares!

33. Adam - 9:10 am // Friday, May 7, 2010

not as boring as this last podcast.

34. KingChris - 3:53 pm // Saturday, May 8, 2010

@Bigpumpkns

Still interested in James Iha? I have been busy lately, but let me know.

35. Bigpumpkins - 5:04 pm // Saturday, May 8, 2010

@kingchris

Yeah I’d love to find said songs without having to order the single, héhé.

36. KingChris - 7:32 pm // Sunday, May 9, 2010

@Bigpumpkins

37. Bigpumpkins - 9:09 am // Thursday, May 13, 2010
