Smashing Pumpkins celebrate Record Store Day in Hollywood 5:15 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

We’re less than an hour away from the first Smashing Pumpkins performance of 2010, who return to the stage after a 16-month hiatus to celebrate two events: Record Store Day and the upcoming release of Teargarden by Kaleidyscope Vol. 1: Songs for a Sailor. According to our Twitter friends who are in attendance on the West Coast, the Pumpkins just soundchecked two unknown songs at Space 15 Twenty. And for those who might be wondering what the line-up is today? Billy Corgan, Jeff Schroeder, Mike Byrne, Mark Tulin, and Kerry Brown.

It’s been awhile since we last live-blogged, so I might be a little rusty. If you’re so inclined, Jason and I created a nifty Twitter list of people who are in attendance at the show. Follow along with them here or check back in with us at Hipsters United as the concert goes down!

4:05pm PST: I’ve seen several reports of the lovely Carina Round opening the show. No word on what’s being played yet, but I gotta say: I love her voice.

4:20pm PST: Video of Billy Corgan playing the second song, an acoustic “Stumbleine,” is up here. Awesome. Was the first song “A Stitch In Time,” as the setlist indicated? Also awesome: Vintage Vinyl has now released the limited edition 7″ vinyl to web orders.

4:30pm PST: Some pretty cool shots of the gig rolling in, including this aerial shot and this photo from front and center. Monte reports that “Today” was just played, a la the Zeitgeist era.

4:40pm PST: “Astral Planes” is apparently not for the faint of heart (including Billy). Who said rock and roll was easy? And — I won’t even speculate as to why or what Kerry is tweeting about from on stage.

4:50pm PST: According to the setlist posted earlier, I’m presuming the Pumpkins have also treated the audience to “A Song for a Son” and “Tristessa” (though this has yet to be confirmed). Mike Byrne must have his work cut out for him. Check out this early Tristessa vid if you have any doubts!

5:00pm PST: Kerry Brown: “PA is blowing up!!!” I’m having flashbacks to Asheville (see: Teases [Various]).

5:05pm PST: Cue the Ukelele. I have absolutely no idea where we are in the setlist. If anywhere.

5:15pm PST: And now Kerry on bongos. (Are the kazoos next?)

5:20pm PST: Wow — according to Monte, those who pre-ordered the EP get it TODAY! I guess the obelisk production fiasco has come to a successful resolution. (Or do they get the 2-foot-tall version?)

5:30pm PST: Aaaaaand, Nacho Libre is apparently now on stage. Kazoos, birdcalls, Mexican wrestlers… nothing should surprise me anymore.

5:45pm PST: Show’s over, folks. Sounded like a fun time, and if you attended, be sure to comment below and let us know your thoughts!

6:50pm PST: Okay, okay. I couldn’t resist this one: James Huffman, a “Bio Writer, Actor, Filmmaker and founder of Indie City Entertainment” who was at the show, spotted Miley Cyrus at Urban Outfitters immediately following the set. #isHollywoodthatfullofcelebrities?ordoesMileyCyrustotallyheart@Billy?

7:00pm PST: Haha, Another Miley Cyrus spotting.

Thus concludes my Twitter fiesta and have a great night!

(8:00pm PST: Last update. Promise. According to the fans who got the boxsets early tonight: the EP tracklist order is “A Song For A Son,” “Astral Planes,” “Widow Wake My Mind,” “A Stitch In Time.” The extra instrumental is on WWMM with organ. And the vinyl includes a b-side called “Teargarden Theme.”)

2. jillysp - 5:29 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Wow, that is a very specific setlist. ;) I give you 33% success rate.

3. Acknowledge - 5:29 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

One of the songs soundchecked was Spangled, as per Linda Strawberry.

4. Ian - 5:32 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

My hypothetical $50 are going to a good place… :D

5. Ian - 5:38 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Re: Monte’s setlist pic:
WHOOOOAAAAA! Spoiler free: SETLIST EXCITEMENT SHOCKERS! Spoilers: I am not winning the hypothetical fifty. Can’t wait to hear the arrangements on these!

6. Adam - 5:42 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

lol good luck with tristessa michael!

7. jillysp - 5:44 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Setlist guesses are fine here, guys, but let’s keep the real setlist a live surprise, mmkay? :) Monte is not so good with the suspense part of this equation, haha.

8. Adam - 5:45 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

but. the. info. is. out. there. people are gonna peek..

9. Ian - 5:48 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

nah braz, spoiler free up in herre. unless it counts as a spoiler that they aren’t turning into the new Dark Star Orchestra?

10. Adam - 5:50 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

i think i gave away the only surprise.. everything else seems pretty standard fare for an SP set list.

11. Acknowledge - 5:52 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Adam: Are you kidding me? Im pretty sure song #5 has never been played live. Ever.

12. Adam - 5:53 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

well i didn’t want to give away that there was another surprise in store but thanks for spoiling it!

13. Ian - 5:55 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

well, at least we’ll have to wait for the show itself to see if he takes his hat off or not, right? no spoilerz there?

14. Adam - 5:55 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

wait.. what song are you talking about?? i have no clue what you are referring too..

15. Chein - 5:59 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Soot And Stars is a great song, but it will be interesting to see what sort of a spin on the arrangement they’ll do. The CD version is so slow and dismal, you’d think they’d need to amp it up for a live setting like Record Store Day. Maybe it’ll be completely reworked.

And yeah, it’ll be interesting to hear how Byrne does on some of these.

16. Ian - 6:00 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

sha-bamp-a-da-bwowwwrrr…

17. Bigpumpkins - 6:00 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

If there are songs in the style of Tristessa on Teargarden, I am such a happy man. It fits I think. We keep saying the new material is pre-Gish and Gish like. I know I say it.

18. Bigpumpkins - 6:02 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Oh and I’m surprised not to see Tarantula there.

19. Bigpumpkins - 6:04 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

I just want to make clear that all of us who will keep an eye on the unfolding of the evening-show can’t be considered as “boycotting SP”.

20. Adam - 6:10 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

yeah!! you fucking hypocrites! boycott my ass!!

21. Adam - 6:11 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

oh right right right soot and stars.. have they ever played ava adore today and stand inside your love?

22. Bigpumpkins - 6:34 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

First time I check this blog live during a show. Good job Jilly seriously.

23. Mr.Vite - 6:52 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Adam go home!

24. D - 7:24 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Soot and Stars!! Tristessa!! YES!!

25. Bigpumpkins - 7:47 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Well the people who were there and who tweet all seem to have greatlty appreciated Mike’s work. That’s cool.

I’m very surprised AND pleased with the setlist.

It is the Smashing Pumpkins if Billy wants to it seems.

26. Floppy Nono - 8:07 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

does anyone know if the whole thing (aside from the last song) was actually played?

also, monte says sp is unsure about tour plans. GREAT :(

27. gyang333 - 8:08 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

I’m interested about what the b-side is. and yeah i sort of gathered there was a problem with the tour when they weren’t announced as part of the splendour lineup in australia.

28. Floppy Nono - 8:11 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

wonder if what was played tonight will wind up being the summerslam setlist or w/e the show in japan is called.

29. KEEP - 8:13 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

thats okay billy keep playing shows in CALI
it used to be chicago but now its hollywood

30. Floppy Nono - 8:33 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

ok so everything except for the final song was officially played according to http://twitter.com/Exclaimed

31. gyang333 - 8:42 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

according to @exclaimed, there’s a 5th new song. He doesn’t know what it is though because it doesn’t specify on the 7″

32. Bigpumpkins - 8:43 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

@gyang333

Yeah just saw that too. Can’t wait to know what the song is.
Tom tom, When the cocks crow, Spangled?

33. Floppy Nono - 8:50 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

probably that uke song

34. gyang333 - 8:57 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

I ventured over to the netphoria site :S
no one’s upped that 5th song yet. I was hoping someone there would have done it already.

35. Floppy Nono - 9:08 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

according to someone in a chat right now the fifth mystery song is listed on the back of the box as “Teargarden Theme”

36. Floppy Nono - 9:09 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

ginger guested on BWBW. also, Soot and Stars was electric and rocking with quiet verses and loud choruses.

37. Floppy Nono - 9:19 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Yes, so it seems.

I’ve got to say though, we posted it in the meantime. If I had known you already posted it, then I wouldn’t have. By respect, despite all.

48. Floppy Nono - 10:08 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

around 1 minute mark i got worried mike was going to have a stroke. so into it!

49. Dirtofgrandeur - 10:11 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Methinks they’re a band again. Mike’s definitely improving more as time goes by. I’m very happy for him, for the band, and for the thought of Leno (however much I detest that huge-chinned SOB).

Also, I think it was really awesome that Ginger was there :D

50. Floppy Nono - 10:14 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

i’d be more excited for leno if it wasn’t widow wake my mind they were going to play :/

51. reggaeluv2000 - 10:19 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Floppy you should have JJB fix those vids you posted

52. pinkmnm - 10:22 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Wow! Looks like i missed all the fun today! From the videos it looked pretty awesome!

53. jillysp - 10:23 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

I fixed ‘em. :) Thanks for posting the video links, dudes.

54. Bigpumpkins - 10:23 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

It seems that Billy succeeds in keeping things cool with the people who surround him musically since 2005 or so. Ginger, Lisa, Jeff, Linda, Mark, Kevin, etc…. (Kerry is an alien in that, being around since a long long while and more even so being d’Arcy’s ex-husband)
Even with those whom he had to part with musically like Lisa and Ginger, things seem to remain ok. Not something we’re used from him, think of the 3 other original members of SP and the whole Zwan band.

Maybe…. and I’m just saying maybe he his indeed surrounding himself with-if not healthier-then more suitable persons for him. Of course, only time will tell what will happen with those people too. Still, this is a fascinating(and for many fans frightening) era for Billy Corgan and his SP label.

I don’t know, I’m just making suppositions here.

55. Bigpumpkins - 10:26 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

@ pinkmnm

It was indeed an awesome day for an online SP fan.

56. Floppy Nono - 10:47 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

Why do people hate netphoria? Ive never gone over in that area so i dont know.

65. Floppy Nono - 11:26 pm // Saturday, April 17, 2010

generally considered to be “negative”. also, it was full of ads and stuff like that but if you use firefox with adblock plus and noscripts they are pretty much nonexistent.

I really like the new one! I could take or leave most of Vol. 1 but I’m very interested to see what he whips up for Vol 2.

86. BitterT - 1:20 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

That soloage in Song for a Son is pretty wicked. I like how they trade off solos, Billys part is amazing though, especially when he first comes in. Mikes drumming is impressive as well. Shit, they should just play this on Leno and actually impress someone.

87. jcoriha - 1:27 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Thank you for that !

Great to see he finally has a Wah pedal back on the floor.

88. Floppy Nono - 1:30 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

nice closeup recording of Stumbline. wonder if they got the whole show

89. tim - 1:35 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Anyone who thinks Mike is the wrong choice for the band after watching these clips is a fucking idiot.

90. Chein - 1:37 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Gotta say that it’s really, really hard for me to call this the Smashing Pumpkins. Jimmy’s involvement was the last shred of the new SP being “legit”, in my opinion. Blah blah, don’t want to get into that argument.

Having said that, this performance pleasantly exceeded my expectations. Very cool. When you’ve been such a longtime fan that you know every second of every song, ingrained in your memory–it’s interesting to hear new band members’ interpretation of the material (from an analytical standpoint). Will they do it justice? Will it be almost sacrilege, even embarassing?

* Nice song choices. Never would’ve dreamed we’d hear Tristessa. Great to hear it, sounded good. Hope BC continues to pull out tracks like this. It looks like they had a blast playing it, and hopefully Billy noticed how much the fans loved hearing it.

* Having Ginger onstage, and writing a song for her baby, was a classy move. Kudos. Good song, too, not just a throwaway.

* Soot And Stars! Works great as a loud/heavy/powerful song. Came out of left field, and delivers.

* I was always a little bored/burned out on Ava Adore, but this version kinda revitalizes it. Love the stops and starts. Good version.

* Really sick of Today, but it sounded pretty good.

* Jeff is quality, and seems like a humble & good guy.

Can’t honestly call this the Pumpkins, maybe more like step-pumpkins, but it’s good to hear these songs, especially this energetic. I have to say I’ve gotten more enjoyment from these YouTube vids than I have from any of the Teargarden tracks.

91. Chein - 1:39 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Also, it’s cool that people take the time to tape and share this stuff. Thanks to all involved! :)

92. Chein - 1:47 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

That Stumbleine video is awesome.

93. jcoriha - 1:49 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Thanks to all you who taped. I wish I could have driven down there today, but at least I get to see it via youtube.

94. Floppy Nono - 1:54 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

96. Floppy Nono - 2:24 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

97. rapapapa - 2:39 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

IT IS Smashing Pumpkins. it always was. deal with it. and question for Adam – what do you think about Mikes performance in all these songs?

98. Chein - 2:41 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

No, it’s not.

99. lala - 2:42 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

amazing NEW song called baby :)

100. rapapapa - 3:00 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Yes, it Is. dont argue. period.

101. Angel - 3:58 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Yeah it is, these fucking kick ass. Everyone can officially shut their mouths about Mike Byrne and the status of the smashing pumpkins. I’d take this version any day.

102. Spaggit - 4:56 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Thanks for the vids, very cool. Just ordered a copy of the limited 7″.

103. arpeggi - 5:16 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Soot and Stars!!!!!!

Great performance from those videos.. Ava Adore is amazing, and all the other (new and old/very old) songs seems fuc’ing incredibile!

good job once again b0lly
looking forward to hear the recordings (and the world tour:)

(and thanks sp community for these info/videos)

104. zzavettoni - 5:50 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Well guys, someone better rip and upload the lossless versions of the songs as soon as possible. As soon as now if possible. :D

105. Spumkins33 - 7:18 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

For the record, Mike messed up in the beginning of the BWBW Bridge speed fill.

BUT, all in all he didn’t do terrible. It was odd hearing “Today” with the verse played on the hi-hats (as Jimmy either played it on a Ride or sometimes not even at all). VERY HAPPY to see Jeff back. Jeff is easily the best guitarist for that band. Hopefully Ginger gets that itch from sitting in. Definitely glad they are all on good terms.

Tristessa? I think Mike especially nailed that one. It was interesting to see how Billy would sing an old song that they haven’t played in 16 some years – he sounded great!

With these new members, I can really see how BILLY is the one that holds this band together. He is a really great frontman, and that’s not something we often hear in regards to him.

I honestly didn’t expect to ever hear old songs again. It’s like when you’re finally over an ex, and they just had a fight with the new guy and they are back on your door step wanting the fleece and you’re thinking that might not be a bad idea. THAT is the feeling I have.

106. realist - 7:31 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

“It’s just music.”
- James Iha.

107. axelease - 8:43 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

ordered my copy of SFAS/WWMM 7″ from vintage vinyl last night — but wondering if the LA version, Astral/Stitch 7″ is available for mail-order anywhere — if anyone knows, please post a link. thanks!

also thanks to all the tapers at the show — loved watching the videos. pleasantly surprised at the setlist. seems billy purposefully selected at least one song from each era/album of the band, as if to suggest a continuity with the past despite the change in personnel. a triumphant return, in any case. quite impressed by mike byrne.

108. Acknowledge - 8:58 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

There’s an energy in these songs that hasnt been present since 2007.

And Trsitessa was surreal. Amazing. This feels more to me like the Smashing Pumpkins than it did with Jimmy behind the kit for the last 3 years.

109. Mr.Vite - 9:03 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I feel the magic again! .. great!

110. doug - 9:45 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

0:41-1:14 of post #83 is the awesome.

111. doug - 9:50 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

btw: I saw Carina Round sing with Maynard James Keenan’s band Puscifer three weeks ago in Milwaukee. She is amazing…

112. Adam - 10:10 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

well since someone cared enough to ask my opinion, i think his drumming is a total mess. he’s not nailing all of these parts, he’s fucking them up left and right. he’s bashing away like any other 20 year old drummer with a lot of testosterone would. sounds just as good as any other guy playing drums along to smashing pumpkins tunes on you tube. it’s just got real billy in front of him, that’s the difference.. and i think that’s what’s giving everyone a boner. he’s all over the place and it’d just make more sense with jimmy, since he’s the one that wrote and played those parts.

to be fair though, i’m basing these opinions on some real shit quailty you tube vids (like everyone else).. i’ll really reserve true judgement for when i hear some better quality versions.

113. Acknowledge - 10:28 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Anyone know if Carina was involved with the SP portion of the show? Or did she just open?

114. Adam - 10:30 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

let me also add, that to fans that are totally pumped and excited by this, i am truly happy for you. if this can get you excited for the future, great. good for billy too that he can still get his fan based pumped. but for me personally, i guess ultimately i am no longer excited by the smashing pumpkins music. it just doesn’t and hasn’t done anything for me the past year and a half. the last time i felt any high powered energy from this band was seeing them play superchrist during the 20th tour. these vids? soory, but there’s nothing in that tristessa video i can’t get a better feeling from watching a vid of them playing it in 1992 on you tube. that goes with the rest of the vids. that’s my honest perspective. I think mike isn’t any where near the level of drummer he’s replacing (especially since he’s playing parts said drummer created, and he’s not playing them anywhere near the level they were at).. but i’m not going to get into a long winded argument with people about it here. you will think the way you do an i will think the way i do. what’s the point in trying to convince?

again, i’m happy you are all finding something great in these videos. does nothing for me. i will say though, i highly highly enjoy ‘baby.’

115. doug - 10:33 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Interesting Adam…I can understand why a 20 year old wouldn’t nail the parts at the first live show in 16 months.
Especially since Jimmy was a veteran (of sorts) pre-pumpkins.
I think Mike plays “his” own songs well and is good at getting through Jimmy’s songs. Tristessa was pretty damn close.
Mike does like to bash. He is certainly less disciplined and controlled than a 45 year old jazz drummer would be.
At least it’s not Kenny Aronoff…yuck. :)

116. energy - 10:37 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

The ferociousness is back

It hasn’t been there since the first show on the arising tour

117. Acknowledge - 10:44 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Jimmy was in his mid to late 20s when Gish came out. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of stuff Mike pumps out by the time he is 27.

And @energy: I hear ya! I was trying to figure out if saying Arising-like energy was hyperbolizing, so Im glad to hear you say it. Machina and Zeitgeist tours felt like the band carrying a heavy weight. This was light. And fresh.

118. alex - 10:45 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

with his back up against the wall, the man delivers

tristessa is amazing. as good as ever. pulling soot and stars out of nowhere was inspired. ava, stumbeline, bullet – all good. nice to hear a new live sfas after the sudio version killed it for me. i even enjoyed stitch.

i’m a diehard iha apologist so was really surprised by how good – almost comforting – it felt to see jeff up there.

god’s in his heaven and all is right in pumpkinland. at least for today.

119. JTristesse - 11:48 am // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I can’t believe I wasn’t there.

120. a - 12:21 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

121. nick - 12:36 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

That drum breakdown in Soot And Stars around 5:50 in the youtube video is so sweet. And then when it kicks back in…:)

122. Tyler Stoering - 1:08 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

“Soot and Stars” is great. I think its anthemic and melodic and a cut above the other Teargarden songs.

I’d disagree that Mike was “a total mess” and “not nailing all of these parts”. Why does he have to play them exactly like Jimmy did? I think Adam is a hater. Mike played great. The end of “Ava Adore” was particularly great from a drumming perspective.

123. Tyler Stoering - 1:10 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

***Sorry, forgot Soot and Stars was a machina era track.

124. Adam - 1:35 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

another final point i’d like to bring up; you guys are essentially still getting boners over jimmy’s work. where’s the excitement for the new material? Minus song for a son (one of the last tune billy and jimmy wrote then mike butchered with his own ‘unique’ style of playing).. i have yet to see the videos posted for astral planes, widow wake my mind, heck even some of the zeitgeist songs performed.. and no one is asking for them. You’re all getting excited over the same old shit, like how hard billy screamed at the end of bullet, hey he played an old song he hasn’t played in 16 years, etc etc etc. Well cool and all, but you’re getting excited over the drumming in songs that jimmy wrote the drum parts too. and that does bother me, because he’s the guy that put the hard work into those energetic parts (not billy), and now we’ve got some kid learning those parts, playing them, and getting everyone all hard about it. again, i’m glad you like it, but personally i’d rather have the real thing.

but billy knows that this will get him positive attention from the fan base. ultimately people would rather talk about the old great songs, as evidenced here and on netphoria. some people are going as far as saying ‘he’s like 90′s billy again!’ seriously? what about new billy? what about the new sp? why isn’t anyone talking about how unique this new song ‘baby’ is? You guys are getting excited over what is essentially a decent cover band fronted by the man that wrote the songs you all truly care about.. rat in a cage and everything before it.

and no, mike doesn’t have to play them like jimmy did, but if he’s going to attempt to (ala tristessa, bullet, SIYL, today) he should at least be able to keep time correctly and not lose the parts half way into them.

also why did bill fall back on his initial promise of not playing old songs? is it cause he really knows that this is what his fans truly want, and he’s realizing he’d rather please his customers than piss them off? guess it doesn’t matter though, playing bullet and tristessa is ultimately what got this site and other fan sites to finally buzz like bees in a hive.

125. matt - 1:37 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I wish more people were talking about “stumbeline.” I thought it was gorgeous. I always get a little emotional when I hear that song. Now that its out there after 12 years hopefully it will get played more

126. Adam - 1:43 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

also people now have the new EP.. why are we not all excitedly talking about that and the new song that is on the new song on the vinyl? where’s the mp3/you tubes of that stuff? oh right.. billy screamed during bullet!! 1995 ya’ll!

127. Chein - 1:44 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@ rapapapa

No, it’s not–and don’t tell me what to do. It’s BC with some random people, including a really creepy old weird guy on bass, playing pretty decent covers of SP songs. And it’s pretty neat to get to hear it, too.

128. rapapapa - 2:27 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Im not telling, Im writing. Yes IT is. and for fucks sake, Mikes playing is really good. Hes not Jimmy, but maybe now, when all the fuckin haters saw his performance, they will stop lying yo yhemselves. and now lots of people consider Jeff as a member of SP. finally that happened. Adam, yeah we are excited about everything, screams, obelisks, old stuff, new stuff – everything. who cares why he broke his ‘promise’. he played old songs/new songs. thats good. if you dont like to argue, then stop writing bullshit. who cares about that. I care about the music, and Mike is a decent replacement. like it or not.
‘Soot and Stars’, ‘Ava Adore’ – \m/ _\m/

129. purple pumpkin - 2:29 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Shutup Adam. You make no sense. Where did he say he wasn’t playing ANY old songs? He’s moving forward but OBVIOUSLY he doesn’t have enough new songs to plan a tour around so he’ll play some oldies. Mike Byrne was awesome!!!

130. lijjji - 2:32 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Oh dear lord sweet Jesus Mary and Joseph. It’s not a cover if you’re the sole songwriter of everything you’re performing. Should the man not be allowed to play his own songs anymore, because his old bandmates left of their own accord?

The whole semantic argument over use of the Smashing Pumpkins moniker is beyond stupid, and to get riled up over the fact that Billy wants to use it to continue a body of work that has always been his own is laughably pathetic.

131. Chein - 2:41 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

“The whole semantic argument” comes with the territory and is not a topic that will probably ever be dropped when the subject of SP comes up.

132. rapapapa - 2:54 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

puprle pumpkin, i think he has. but it would be strange if he’d play ONLY new songs.

lijjji agree..

damn, each member (MIKE, GINGER, BILLY, JEFF) nailed their parts very well!

133. alex - 2:57 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

“also why did bill fall back on his initial promise of not playing old songs? is it cause he really knows that this is what his fans truly want, and he’s realizing he’d rather please his customers than piss them off? guess it doesn’t matter though, playing bullet and tristessa is ultimately what got this site and other fan sites to finally buzz like bees in a hive.”

Billy’s twitter immediately before the show …

“Sometimes a warrior has to know when to surrender as his most aggressive move.”

134. purple pumpkin - 2:57 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I don’t recall Billy saying he’d ONLY play new songs, sorry.

135. BitterT - 3:23 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

ive seen Billy scream on Bullet at all five shows ive been to since 2007. i dunno why its such a surprise to some but still its good to hear. i hope they keep pulling out old rare songs, loved tristessa ans soot and stars. oh and SFAS was amazing. anyone have video of Astral Planes or Widow? Adam ive been asking for these for a while now.

136. Thoma Ramsey - 3:25 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

after seeing the videos…..Mike Byrne has got my respect. I welcome Jeff with open arms…Tulin can keep up, a great choice for a fill in player…..and mostly importantly-90s Billy is back. No dresses and unleashing some straight up against-especially at the end of “Bullet”.

I have kept the faith with the band-and now it’s fully, 100 percent, restored after 10 years.

137. BitterT - 3:29 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Also i dont care if you dont like Mike playing drums, its change and i know a lot of people cant handle change very well. I think he should play the parts how he wants to play them, not note for note as Jimmy would. Change is good, change it up. Keep it up Mike your doing great and your exciting to watch. I know Jimmy was fu@king amazing and can never be lived up to, but would you rather have SP become non-existant? I for one am just grateful that Billy still has the artistic courage to put him self out there and i want to thank him for the great free music and memories he brings back during these shows.

138. pinkmnm - 3:33 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Wow… This is great… i feel awesome! I really liked your comment Thoma Ramsey! :)

139. Jeff(not from SP) - 3:35 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Thoma Ramsey you mean angst? and Billy wore dresses in 90s.

140. D - 3:48 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@BitterT

exactly.

141. Angel - 3:53 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I’m with Jeff Schroeder above me here, the dresses were some times actual woman dresses in concert in the early 90′s. I get what Thoma means though, Billy looks like hes himself just having fun and enjoying what he plays.

142. Adam - 3:55 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@purple pumpkin he said that several times during the last tour.

and i love change. but sometimes change can be for the worst.

143. Adam - 3:59 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

thomas ramsay “and mostly importantly-90s Billy is back.”

i find it incredibly ironic that the people on the same side of saying i can’t accept change will also say the same that is typed above. thank god 90′s billy is back because we really can’t accept current billy! make me laugh.

144. rapapapa - 4:00 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

sometimes not. btw, what about ‘Teargarden Theme’ it’s a b-side song, yes? maybe someone already heard it? what are the opinions about this song?

145. Adam - 4:05 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

see this is where we differ in our thoughts. i think this is bad change for the pumpkins. difference here is i can accept that you guys dig it, you can’t accept that i don’t dig it. evidenced by all the ‘shut the fuck ups’ blah blah blah garbage. bunch of children.

but hey you asked for my opinion, you got it.

146. rapapapa - 4:12 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

bunch of children. hahawaha. you act like a child, pretending to be adult. if Corgan would quit, and some other dude pretending to be Corgan would use a name ‘Smashing Pumpkins’, then It would be fuckin nonsense. but now – SP lineup is great. Billy, Jeff, Mike. I guess Mark is only for the tours, cuz there’s a bass auditions and so on.

and yeah, I got your opinion. it’s clear. dont repeat it 100 times, in other comment pages. adults dont do that. :D. and check BWBW. you will see how Mike immitating JC. LOL.

147. rapapapa - 4:14 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

how mike su*k imitating JC. it should have been like that.

148. Adam - 4:18 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

yeah he sucks at BWBW what’s your point? that middle section falls to pieces and he cant keep the damn tempo together. it sounds like a you tube drum tribute, ‘cept billy corgan is up front. it lacks the power the song usually has.

but there you go again, only talking about bullet. talking about a kid playing a drum part jimmy chamberlin wrote. have fun getting ripped off.

149. Adam - 4:21 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

also u don’t want to hear my opinion don’t fucking ask for it. deja vu.

150. rapapapa - 4:23 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

wrote wrote wrote. tell something new. he played it pretty well, but you are too limited to see that. and you actually know it, but have no balls to admit that.

151. rapapapa - 4:24 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I want to heart it once, not twice. and dont tell me what I can’t do, you JC co*k sucker. sorry, I meant, adult Adam, who thinks everyone (especially me) are 6-12graders.

152. Adam - 4:29 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

well calling me a cock sucker isn’t really helping out your side of the ‘adult’ argument.

“he didn’t play it very well, but you’re too limited to see that.”

there i fixed it and am now directing it to you.

153. BitterT - 4:32 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I appreciate the differing opinions, thats what forums are all about! Mike isn’t great on all songs, in fact Jimmy destroys Mike on that GLOW. But i thought he did awesome on Tristessa. I wish we could get off Bullet, i really dont want to hear that again. If you want to talk about new stuff, what did u all think of SFAS. I thought it was amazing, i love how the guitars are put together on that, but the ending lines seemed a bit rushed and unnecessary even live. The little clip i saw of Stitch didnt seem that great compared to the SITS versions with violin. I really wish to hear Astral to see if he added the solos live, and to see WWMM to see how it will sounds on Leno..

154. Adam - 4:32 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

oh and i’m making a CHANGE to be an adult here. stop living in the past. are you unable to accept change?

155. Adam - 4:33 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

bitterT is there a vid up of GLOW?

156. rapapapa - 4:36 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

:D you are dumb or just pretending to be one? I guarantee that you listen to each NEW track, watched every live show, love the drumming, but you’re preteding to hate everything, cuz by doing that you are ‘cool’, ‘different’, and you think that it annoys people like me, who actually love almost all the stuff, and admit it, insted of denying it. but Im not mad, i dont see a reason to be in that mood. Im 1000km away from you, writing comments on a pc keyboard, laughing in minds, while reading how you hate Mikes playing, when everyone else, even those who said earlier than you that it sucked, now starting to admit, that Mike can play pretty good.

and A Song for a Son live was good as it was back in 2008.

157. rapapapa - 4:40 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

and you’re the one, who lives in the past.

158. Adam - 4:42 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

hey give me a call when you have a point worth discussing.

159. Adam - 4:43 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

i live in the past? i’m not the one getting pleasure from songs written 15-20 years ago. in fact i’m one of the only one here who has said i love the new song ‘baby.’

160. rapapapa - 4:44 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

same to you. write your number on a bus seat or on a bench.

161. rapapapa - 4:45 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

alright, you love ‘baby’. thats cool.

162. Adam - 4:49 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

do you like baby? or have you even bothered listening to it yet?

163. lijjji - 4:49 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Adam, people want you to shut up NOT because you’re not into this stuff, but because you, well… won’t shut up.

Don’t enjoy the new material? Think the band is a travesty with only one original member? Great. Lovely. Say your piece and move on.

164. rapapapa - 4:55 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I do like it. its not my favourite, but it’s a very listenable track. better than Widow or Astrals.

165. david - 4:56 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

jesus christ, can we just hear what “teargarden theme” sounds like? i have never seen such little excitement for a new SP song.

and may i ask, what does “extra instrumental on WWMM with organ” mean???

166. Adam - 4:58 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

it means there’s an organ instrumental following widow wake my mind. maybe preceding it but you wouldn’t know from all the talk going on about the EP fans now have their hands on.

167. Acknowledge - 5:00 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@david:
It’s an instrumental à la Infinite Sadness meets Shadowland meets Le Deux Machina. Harpsichord + organ, with a bit of guitar. Sounds oriental at first.

168. david - 5:03 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

thanks for the clarification…so it’s not a second new song, just an addendum to WWMM? now if we could just steer the conversation to “teargarden theme”…does anyone know if that is an instrumental as well?

169. Adam - 5:04 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

i believe that is what acknowledge was referring to. also there is apparently a flac of it available over at netphoria.

170. Acknowledge - 5:10 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Ya, david, I was refering to Teargarden Theme.

171. david - 5:10 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

okay…so there are two new instrumentals, both of which involve an organ? lol. see, now maybe i’m crazy for suggesting this, but it seems like there ought to be a post discussing this. hell, i can’t even find a thread dedicated to it on netphoria. this is just insane to me.

172. Bigpumpkins - 5:11 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Adam, Adam, Adam. How do you ever fall asleep at night?
I mean, when I feel that I’ve been a jerk during the day, I feel bad when I go to bed. I think this is a common reaction for a human being. You must never sleep.

173. Acknowledge - 5:12 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Honestly, it’s not like this moving, epic, emotional song. I’d classify it along the lines of Infinite Sadness and French Movie Theme. It’s a nice, instrumental. Simple.

174. david - 5:21 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

listening now. i have to agree, acknowledge, it’s a nice instrumental but i suppose nothing to get worked up over. thanks for being the first person in 170 comments to talk about it, though. :)

175. Adam - 5:28 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

but gauphil.. i’m not human. i thought you knew?

176. rapapapa - 5:28 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

thanks for the headsup, about the link in netphoria. yeah, it does have similarity to ‘Le Deux Machina’.

177. Bigpumpkins - 5:40 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Yeah I’ve got to find a way to hear that instrumental tune as soon as possible. You’re making me anxious.

You are human Adam. You’re just hurt. You are lost probably. Honestly, in the end, I can hardly blame you. I know it’s not your first choice to be like that.

178. Adam - 5:41 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

oh save me gauphil! hold me in your strong french arms!

179. Bigpumpkins - 5:45 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

No, I don’t like to try and help people who won’t try to help themselves.

What’s the “french” arms got to do here please? This is as close as it gets to being a racist notice.

Ok, when you and I have a conversation in french, I’ll refer to all the parts of your body as “english” parts.

I’m not french by the way, I’m Québécois and Canadien and I speak the language of the french. Just like you’re american and speaking the language and the english people.

You’re just as predictable and mean and annoying and moron as you always were on this thread. I guess I(we) should stop hoping.

180. rapapapa - 5:47 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

4 listens in a row. I like that music. probably because I love instrumental songs (post-rock / instrumental) and so on. Mellon Collie’s instrumental is great too.

‘Teargarden Theme’ reminds me of one Soviet animation movie :D.

the first EP.. I dont know. I really like ASFAS and ASIT, and Astral Planes (that one musically). WWMM – love the bass and synths, but I prefer to listen to it as rarely as possible. Teargarden Theme – love it.
lets hope that second EP will be better.

184. Acknowledge - 6:01 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Thanks for posting GLOW! I love how the bass part is now guitar-driven. Good stuff!
As you said, bring on Astral Planes and Widow!!!

185. BitterT - 6:04 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

its funny how glow doesnt seem as repetitive now..hmm…
purple pumpkin, check my last post

186. Acknowledge - 6:09 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

What I appreciate the most about Teargarden Theme is how he plays with cliches a bit. Im thinking of 2:52-2:57, and how thats your classic song ending. Except it just continues into the rest of the song.

187. alex - 6:22 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

can someone post a link for teargarden theme and wwmm extended?

188. purple pumpkin - 6:22 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I dig. Thank you kindly. Flows very well into SFAS.

189. david - 6:26 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

alex, teargarden theme is over on netphoria. not sure if we’re allowed to link here but it’s easy enough to find. i would like to hear the extended WWMM though. anybody seen that floating around?

190. david - 6:28 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

found it, nevermind. hints above.

191. alex - 6:59 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

thanks david. teargarden theme sounds pretty good. its weird having the songs out one by one. i will prob listen to the theme more than if they released the whole cd. still want the extended wwmm but i can wait….for a little while

192. david - 7:01 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

i listened to the extended WWMM and laughed…not because it’s bad, but it’s just much ado over nothing. still, if you want to hear it, and i’m sure you do, i recommend you follow lapis4 on twitter.

193. ian - 7:31 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Extended intrumental! Ha ha ha. This is like when Radiohead announced the Diskbox for In Rainbows and there were two songs “MK 1″ and “MK 2″ that no one knew what they were and then they turned out to be like, minute and a half instrumentals. Granted, I thought they were very nice, but they still seemed like bits of already known songs that just got sort of pulled out of the mix and slapped onto the end. Haphazard-like.

Actually, this is exactly like that, but less substantial.

All that said, I do like the Teargarden Theme. And the CD looks beautiful, I can’t wait to get my copy!

Oh for hell sakes. It was a fucking good concert. Mike was great and was fun to talk to afterward. All the new stuff was great, same with the old. Got my Teargarden EP signed by Billy.

Why is it that no one gives QOTSA shit for only having one original member? And he also talks shit on old members too.

202. Adam - 9:08 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

quite presumptuous of you to assume my life is filled with nothing but displeasure.. and on what, the fact that you disagree with my distaste for current things SP and some of the fans that ‘represent’ the band? man my thoughts really drive some of you crazy, don’t they? so crazy to a point that the only way some of you can understand my viewpoint and try to counter argue it is to paint me as this miserable and negative being that has no purpose in life but to bash current SP.

hey, if it makes you feel better, have at it.

203. Adam - 9:13 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

josh homme gets plenty of shit from his own fan base.

204. reggaeluv2000 - 9:32 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

205. Bigpumpkins - 9:35 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

And if you feel okay with the fact that several, several, many many people think you’re a loser and an asshole Adam, have at it.

I suppose around 10-20% of the people you annoy write about it. That’s fair.

So, that’s a freaking lot.

Loser.

206. AmazingHat - 9:38 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Adam, have you taken the time to analyse the lyrics of Astral Planes? Most of the criticism has been directed at the lack of variety, but are we overlooking the obvious? Yes, Billy REPEATEDLY chants “everyone gather, warm your soul,” but who does he really mean by “everyone”? His fans? His critics? His immediate hippie-circle? His cult? Everyone in the world? Just wanted your thoughts on this.

207. Spumkin33 - 9:40 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Leave Adam alone. Fuck, it’s just an opinion!

90s Billy, hah. This show did put Billy in the more “one of us” category which I prefer. He has a pretty cool street clothes style.

Jeff talked! Jeff seems like a really cool guy. Having him still around makes this more of a band in my opinion. I’ve been a fan since Gish, and I prefer Jeff in the band than to James. Him and Billy seem to have a pretty good repoire(sp) now.

208. Adam - 9:42 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

wow, big pumpkins a hypocrite are we? so will you be losing sleep tonight for acting like a jerk? you are human, correct?

209. Bigpumpkins - 9:43 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Spunmkin33

Forget it man, it’s not an opinion, it’s an agenda to rotten our trip with the current SP. With all due respect, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Adam is the biggest douche I’ve met on the internet. There are tons of douche but they usually get tired of being so after a while. He does not.

210. Bigpumpkins - 9:45 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@ Adam

I don’t feel bad for trying to make you understand how you are. You have no respect for anyone else than yourself and don’t try to make me look like the bad guy. Anyone who’s been around for awhile knows you’re the shit spreader.

I’m just sad I don’t speak english well so I could correctly explain how I think you’re a moron.

211. Adam - 9:46 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

thanks @Spumkin33 for being one of the few to realize this and not take such serious offense. people getting on my case callin’ me a hater while shooting the same amount of venom they accuse me of shooting.

but i’m not going to be like them and sit here accusing them of instability issues.

212. Bigpumpkins - 9:47 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Sorry everyone but the guy drives me crazy.

Fact is I can’t believe how soothing these youtube vids are. The Smashing Pumpkins are alive and well and Mike Byrne is an amazing drummer.

213. Adam - 9:47 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

i have respect for those that can show some respect as well. you lack that ability, obviously.

214. pinkmnm - 9:48 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@ Bigpumpkins

Comment 171 was really funny! ( no offense to you Adam, just honesty) ;)

215. Bigpumpkins - 9:48 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Pfff

Yeah always playing the role following the situation eh Adam? You could become my instant friend if it suited an argument you had with someone else.

You’re a bad person for what I know. To think I thought you might not be that bad when I started reading you.

Yeah I know, you’re over all my comments. You’re just here to express a fair opinion.

216. AmazingHat - 9:49 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Everyone (in this thread) gather, warm your soul(s)

217. Adam - 9:49 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

and you accuse me of stating an opinion like it’s a fact and you say this “Fact is I can’t believe how soothing these youtube vids are. The Smashing Pumpkins are alive and well and Mike Byrne is an amazing drummer.”

admit it. you hate me because i have the ability to point out the fallacies in your logic and you have the inability to point out mine. just admit that and we might be able to understand one another better.

218. reggaeluv2000 - 9:50 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Adam who are you? I only see people complaining about you….
here is your chance people to tell me all about Adam your likes and dislikes…
oh wait this is HU a place for talking SP!!

219. Bigpumpkins - 9:52 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@pinkmnm

And I sincerely think so. I really do think Adam is frequently thinking about us on HU when he is alone home(Well most of the time). And it’s definitely not good thoughts/energy. I still pity the guy but as long as he doesn’t admit he’s not fair at all….

Ok, I’m done with that.

I just can’t believe he’s still playing his stupid role while it’s obvious we, fans, finally have a real moment of joy.
He says he’s happy for us, then why does he have to say a thousand times the same thing? That he doesn’t like it anymore, that Mike sucks, blahblah. Geez dude. We have to speak louder, us, loving fans.

220. pinkmnm - 9:52 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@ Bigpumpkins & Adam

Are you two married or related in some way??

221. Adam - 9:52 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

aha!

222. Bigpumpkins - 9:53 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Adam

You actually annoy me more when you discuss with other people. I see more clearly then.

I don’t think you’re any good in pointing out anything logic.

And yes, it’s a fact that it’s soothing for me. And, YES, it’s a fact SP IS ALIVE.

223. pinkmnm - 9:53 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

What does “aha!” mean?

224. Bigpumpkins - 9:54 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@pinkmnm

I take it as a personnal insult. Sorry.

225. Adam - 9:54 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

i state i dislike the new lineup, the new vids, i state my reasons, all valid in their own right, and it’s people like you, big pumpkins, who bring me to the center of attention. who is the one with the real problem here? who is the one that seems the most bothered here, hmmmm?

226. Spumkin33 - 9:54 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Adam

Well, why don’t you try saying something positive when mentioning a negative. Like,

“Mike’s drumming isn’t as good as Jimmy’s, BUT Billy’s hair is looking great”

“I don’t like Mike being in the Smashing Pumpkins, BUT I’m happy they are still around”

“Teargarden is lame, BUT at least Billy is playing Tristessa again”

some people here need their hand held, and came here to avoid the dickhead sp fans you get on some other sites (no names, hah!). But at the end of the day, Billy got Adam reading Hipstersunited and following this latest incarnation.

So Adam – I’m with ya. But enjoy the ride, Billy is built to last, and so is this band. That’s one of the best things I could ever hope for.

Peace. Love. Poppycock.

227. Adam - 9:55 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

pinkmm that was at regaluv2000s post.

228. pinkmnm - 9:56 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@ Bigpumpkins

Oh i didn’t mean to insult you! Sorry :(

I thought i was being funny. Trying to lighten the mood a little. I apologize.

229. Adam - 9:56 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

i did mention a positive, which FLIES OVER EVERYONES HEADS BECAUSE THEY ARE MORE OBSESSED WITH THE NEGATIVES THAN I AM.

I REPEAT, THE NEW SONG BABY IS FANTASTIC.

230. pinkmnm - 9:57 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

I’m to lazy to read all the posts.

231. AmazingHat - 9:58 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Adam

Of course you would like a song written about you, you big baby! :)

232. Adam - 9:58 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

not meant towards you pinkmnm, but if one has the energy to respond, they should have the energy to read the material they are responding to.

233. Bigpumpkins - 9:59 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@ pinkmnm

It’s fine, I still appreciate you a lot. Actually, chatting with people like you and Purple Pumpkin and a few others make so that it’s worth coming back despite Adam.

Of course, the good work from the people of HU helps too. So does the fact that SP is the best band ever.

234. reggaeluv2000 - 9:59 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

That song is FANTASTIC!
Do you think it will be on the album?
I hope he puts it in somewhere

235. pinkmnm - 10:01 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Ha ha! Good point, but there are 232 post on this page. Did you read all of them?? If you did… Way to go!!

236. Adam - 10:02 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

i think it’s one of the most unique things he’s written in a long time. very lovely chord progression, and i love the bit where he starts strumming 32nd notes.. brings unexpected drama.

Gauphil, seriously no harm done. just know it gives me extreme pleasure to push your buttons, and obviously it gets to you. i’m not sure what’s more unhealthy, your obsession with billy corgan or your obsession with me.

237. Dystopic - 10:03 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

After reading lots of comments, but not having the opportunity to watch/hear the YouTube videos, I was expecting to hear a noticeable improvement with ol’ Mikey. The dude knows how to play a roll, but he’s got such a terrible feel; no finesse or nuance. The breakdown of Tristessa really underscores this, and the bridge of BWBW for that matter. Adam really hit the nail on the head, it’s like watching someone on YouTube play Pumpkins drum covers — except I could listen to that 1111phil1111 guy all day compared to Mike.

It’s disappointing too, because Billy & Jeff sounded really good. It’s nice to see a “Pumpkins” concert in a laid back setting, no costumes, berating, etc, etc. But man, I can’t get past Mike. Oh well, I guess I should keep my opinions to myself, right?

238. Adam - 10:03 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@pinkmnm probably 150 of those posts are either typed by me or directed toward me.. i’m almost as popular as the videos in this thread (jk).

239. Bigpumpkins - 10:05 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Adam I’m not obsessed with Billy. Whatever you may think. There are things he’s done I like less but I won’t talk about it with the biggest Billy basher I know.

240. Adam - 10:06 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

yes dystopic, you don’t want big pumpkins and a few others who can’t create an intelligent counter argument creating an unhealthy obsession with how you must live your life.

241. Spumkin33 - 10:06 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Hah, so I wonder if Mike ever reads some of this shit?

I mean, he’s a youngin – he uses the interwebs. If I ever joined the pumpkins, I would avoid the hell out of this site.

What is with Mike’s arms while drumming? They seem like they are in a lock position, he doesn’t look loose at all. Nerves? A newly learned discipline? BUT he NAILED Tristessa.

Drummers are a pain in the ass. Especially young ones – the fact that Mike didn’t add a bunch of extra fills to show off speaks lengths about what he may be capable of. Worst case scenario – he leaves SP some day with the greatest experience from one of the greatest bands ever. Billy would make a great mentor for younger musicians. And he’s not like an ex addict, so he wouldn’t inundate you with all that Jesus crap – wait..

I KIDD I KIDD! Billy seems to be in a really great place right now, and whatever he’s doing he needs to keep on keeping on. He’s a good dude.

242. Exclaimed - 10:07 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Adam, you’re entitled to your opinion, I just thoroughly enjoyed the show; I had a great time.

I know that Mike isn’t Jimmy, but let’s face it, no one can drum like Jimmy can except Jimmy. I’m sure that if the SOAD drummer became the SP drummer, there would be stuff to nitpick at too. Jimmy is one fucking monster of a drummer, but I have to say that I was impressed with his improvement since the SITS tour. I talked to him after the show and said that I was iffy about him playing Jimmy’s stuff while I was waiting in the line and he said that he was incredibly nervous playing his hero’s songs in his hero’s band. I don’t blame him.

You’ve got my respect for expressing your opinion, though, Adam. Takes the flame and doesn’t afraid of anything. ;)

243. pinkmnm - 10:07 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Adam
Hahaha! Awesome!

@Bigpimpkins
That makes me feel better, b/c I hate it when people are mad at me. Even if ive never met them in person. :)

244. Adam - 10:09 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

“the fact that Mike didn’t add a bunch of extra fills to show off speaks lengths about what he may be capable of.”

see, i saw way too much of this. there were some really musically pointless fills during ava adore, and the ending of stand inside your love is just too much, sounds like he’s at a complete disconnect with the rest of the instruments in that band, in a lot of these songs.

245. purple pumpkin - 10:10 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

QOSTA was always a mixed bag, unfair criticism.

@Adam
You’re an intriguing fella. Do you have a Facebook page?

246. Adam - 10:11 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

i how jimmy feels about mike… probably no ill will towards mike but more towards billy, if it truly exists.

247. Spumkin33 - 10:12 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

While we’re critiquing SP’s drumming through the years, you know what sucked? The MACHINA era drumming.

After the Arising tour, Jimmy either super-improved past the point of down to earth drumming or practiced with a faulty metronome – but that shit was WAAAYYY too fast. It was hard to follow the fills, and when he would speed up (esp older songs) it just killed the vibe.

Probably had something to do with Billy, too and the tensions with the pity party playing Guitar begrudgingly – but it was not good.

So far Jimmy Chamberlain > Mike Byrne = Matt Walker > Kenny Aronoff > Jimmy (Machina Era)

Maybe it was the Yamaha kit 1999-2000?

248. Adam - 10:12 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

purple pumpkin, why do you want to know that? i doubt it’s because you want to instigate friendly chat with me.

249. Woody - 10:13 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

The Beatles were bigger than Jesus and now Adam is bigger than the Pumpkins!

250. BitterT - 10:14 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Am i the only one who doesnt like the song Baby? i find it kinda silly and a bit lame. i hope it is not on teargarden. i much rather prefer other short sweet songs like caroline yes. i think its good for just a one-off b-side tho, but does not seem like future teargarden “A” material. id rather have this as a concert thing

251. Adam - 10:14 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Spumkin33- the machina tour was bad, but the drumming was the best part! man.. his playing was top notch at that point imo. are we forgetting fuck you from metro? rock on? don’t want to get too in depth with the machina tour, but i disagree his drumming sucked during that period.

252. purple pumpkin - 10:16 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Adam

I think the main difference between us is that you nitpick about every drum fill or whatever it may be instead of just enjoying the song. I have friends who are the same way who get all caught up on those things and it makes for a less enjoyable experience. I’m not saying chill out or anything but just let loose a bit and you’d find some light. Maybe ignorance is bliss when it comes to this b/c i feel like I have the advantage here in just enjoying the music and seeing how a new young drummer develops.

253. Spumkin33 - 10:16 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Adam
Have you ever played with a 19 year old drummer, hah?! That was nothing. Be grateful he kept his shirt on, didn’t have a multi tom and cymbal kit, not hit a drum while Billy was talking to the audience or tuning, pick up his cell phone to txt up a girl (or boy?), update his Twitter mid show, etc. Those fills were nothing, the kid’s gotta put some personal flair in there. “But a part’s a part”.

254. Adam - 10:16 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

and pumpkins drummers, imo, Jimmy > Matt Walker > Kenny Aronoff + Adore percussion ensemble > Drum Machine > Mike Byrne.

I really, really loved the percussion for the adore tour.

255. pinkmnm - 10:18 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@BitterT

Ya, i agree with you. I didn’t hate it, but i dont think its Great either. I’m just not a fan of the ukulele to be honest.

256. Adam - 10:19 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Spumkin33 – played with about 5 drummers that are 19-21 year olds. all were extremely professional except for this one guy who would show up late constantly, only to show up completely baked.

purple pumpkin – it’s deeper than that. i can’t even feel any sense of musical energy from his drumming. maybe ignorance is bliss though.

257. gyang333 - 10:20 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

@Adam
I don’t know, I think you’re being sort of a hater for no reason. I understand everyone has their opinions, but how can Mike be worse than drum machine? If he was worse, why would Billy take him then? He had other options, including going with a machine, which he did not do. I’m sure most can accept that Jimmy > Matt > Kenny + Percussion Ensemble > Mike. But including the drum machine was just spiteful.

258. purple pumpkin - 10:21 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

Adam, just because I disagree with 99% of your opinions here doesn’t mean I have hate towards you. I wouldn’t judge you completely based on your negativity towards SP (or even if you were a Pats fan) but we’ve been talking a lot here and I’m sure we can find some common ground. It must be irritating to others that we talk back and forth on this blog.

259. Adam - 10:21 pm // Sunday, April 18, 2010

that was totally a joke, gyang333. i thought people would pick up on that but apparently i’m taken way too seriously.

271. Trickknee - 1:13 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

I was there and I was very impressed. I’ve seen SP for every tour and this was a fantastic show. Especially the sing choices. The band was having a really good time and so was the crowd. Billy stayed after and postponed having dinner with Linda Strawberry (very pregnant) to sign autographs.
Technically it wasn’t perfect but I enjoyed that. It was laid back, intimate and raw. Something I’ve not heard or felt from the band in years. There was no pretense or bad vibes and a sense of humility, humor and appreciation from Billy.

272. wombat77 - 2:00 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

Well I have to say that I would love to see Adam and his fellow HU readers (enemies) at an SP concert together. Adam from what I have read I don’t think your’e a true fan and it seams you would rather be having a fist fight or an argument about the band whilst SP is rocking right in front of you. I hate fans like that who ruin it for everyone especially during a show. Why do you bither if you don’t like them that much. It seams like you are striving for perfection in the band but there is no such thing as perfect. But in cyberspace it’s even more annoying cos we have to deal with you for longer periods of time. HU.com is is for SP. Adam is for BS.com

I am still enjoying this big buzz form the youtube clips from the recent show and SP is so cool right now. From now on that is what all fans should focus on and just ignore Adam and his negativity! That’s what I am gonna do… no more reading anything from Adam.. Sorry mate! You are an embarrasment to the name “Adam”. As my real name is the same! Doh

Adam, try to reach you spiritual side more often an let all that negative energy be released to the abyss.

273. Chein - 2:48 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

Another Tristessa vid, nice quality + shows the beginning….thanks taper!

274. Angel - 2:58 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

Quite the contrary I think Adam is a HUGE Sp fan, and nobody would be here this much replying to as many comments as he does. I think Jimmy Chamberlin leaving was just quite possibly the last straw for him as it was for many. Thus theres this aura of hatred for Mike Byrne coming from him, but hes not a bad drummer! I can see why you wouldn’t like him however. His emphasis seems to be on speed and I thought Jimmy would hit pretty hard some times unnecessarily and Mikey just bashes his kit while playing all the time. No i’m not a drummer btw, I’ve played with a few though.

Still 19 year old drummer…do be glad he kept his shirt on… didn’t back talk to billy, annoyingly tap the bass pedals, etc.. /joke

I’m still completely buzzed, I think the new songs blended pretty well with the old ones. They sound like they belong in the same set list, Adore was awesome, Bullet was exciting and the new stuff sounded amazing. Particularly Baby and Song for a Son.

275. cologne23 - 4:00 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

“Thus theres this aura of hatred for Mike Byrne coming from him, but hes not a bad drummer!”
Angel is not hate… like Adam & Dystopic I also think he not good enough for SP…I miss JC.
but nevertheless I’m still a huge SP fan.

276. axelease - 7:33 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

the guy holding up the tristessa single in the tristessa video above (comment 273) is hilariously perfect!

277. skullivan - 8:55 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

While I always hate to interrupt the beating of a dead horse, I’d like to take this opportunity to point out that Amazon once again has EP#1 for $23.99.

@107 Axelease: A friend of mine actually snagged the last copy of the Astral Planes 7″ from Amoeba for me yesterday (or so the clerk said, there could very well be more hidden in the back, I dunno).

278. doug - 10:45 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

Kenny Aronoff couldn’t play BWBW either…

279. purple pumpkin - 11:01 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

280. purple pumpkin - 11:30 am // Monday, April 19, 2010

nvm

281. MM - 1:06 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

I apologize if this was mentioned and I simply missed it, but does anyone know if anyone recorded this for the audio archive? I’d love to have this show on my iPod.

282. jcoriha - 2:00 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

I personally did not care for Kenny as a Pumpkin. I would still rank my list as – Jimmy, Matt, Mike, but Mike had a good first stab at it here from what I’ve seen. I’ve long since given up on a drummer having a perfect night (with the exception of Jimmy!)

283. StuckInVain - 3:21 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

Didn’t Jimmy always have tempo issues? Not to disagree that he’s a great drummer (of course he is), but can anyone really point to a perfect night? Has he been deified to a degree?

284. gyang333 - 3:33 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

@StuckInVain

well, I don’t think that there really is anyone who has perfect tempo. But I really liked what Jimmy brought to the drumming.

285. Bigpumpkins - 3:47 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

Maybe at some point we can stop always comparing Mike to Jimmy. I understand it’s normal to do it but…. at some point it might be more positive to just appreciate or judge Mike as an individual, an original drummer.

286. Bigpumpkins - 3:48 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

Jimmy is and will always be the reason my favorite drummer and he is the reason why I started playing drums but I don’t see the need to compare any new drummer playing with SP to him. No one will ever be Jimmy except Jimmy himself and he’s gone.

287. Dystopic - 4:18 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

First of all, you can’t avoid comparing Mike to Jimmy when Mike is playing Jimmy’s parts. However, my grievance with Mike is not that he’s not Jimmy. My grievance is that he doesn’t sound good (imho, obviously) in the Smashing Pumpkins. Matt Walker wasn’t Jimmy, but he sounded fine. Kenny Aronoff wasn’t Jimmy, and I didn’t like him either. It’s just a matter of finding the right guy for the job, and I don’t think Mike is it. As I said before, the guy can play, but being a good musician and being a complementary musician are two totally different things.

@Dystopic

Fair enough, that’s a fair critic. I don’t agree at all but I get your point.

There is a way to analyse Mike’s playing without necessarily comparing him to Jimmy, even though he’s playing some of his parts.

289. Adam - 4:52 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

it’s hard not to compare him to jimmy to when he attempts to rip jimmy off in his playing.

and jesus, fair criticism, huh gauphil? dystopic basically summed up everything ive been saying all along. since when have you been able to see a view point that didn’t agree with yours? oy vey.

290. StuckInVain - 4:57 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

It’s all about presentation, Adam.

291. doug - 5:11 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

alright…that was pretty funny.

292. Adam - 5:12 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

oh presentation my ass.

293. Bigpumpkins - 5:59 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

It is all about presentation AND intentions. You say things just to save your face or to piss people up. I gave you the benefit of the doubt a long time before I realised you were just being a moron Adam. I even defended you for quite a while. I’d never do that anymore.

294. Bigpumpkins - 6:00 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

Yeah your presentation is like an ass indeed.

295. pinkmnm - 6:19 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

@Bigpumpkins
That was really funny! Good comeback!

And yes, i agree. Presentation is a big help in communicating you views on life.

296. Adam - 8:26 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

man, what are you in 6th grade?

you got me all wrong. and you seem like the only one who gets a little more pissed than normal around here.

297. Bigpumpkins - 11:57 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

I’ve got to admit, Adam, that you’re a bit wasting it for me around here.

I decided like a year ago that I’d try to go on internet forums about SP. At this moment I had been the biggest fan of SP I had met, even though in the mid 90′s I was far from being the only fan of the band around, to say the least. In 2007 I had no idea what Netphoria was, and HU even less.
So in 2008 or 2009 I decided to participate in an internet “community”. For some reason, I really thought I was gonna find a message of love. What SP had always been in my head. For 15 years SP meant love to me. They Meant loud fucking rock of course but they were also associated with a “cheesy”, mellow side that wasn’t necessarily present in all the alternative rock bands of that era. To me, the Smashing Pumpkins had to be attracting people that had a particularly heartfelt view on the world, like I thought I had, in a way.

Anyway, it’s hard for me to write that kind of complex message in my second language but I’ve got to give you that you are harmful Adam. If deeply that is what you want to be, well done man. You’re one of the first “bad” things I saw of SP. Someone that’s dedicated to spend that much time bashing everything the band does and pointing out as quick as possible every negative aspects of their evolution, that’s what you are.

You’re along with the departure of Jimmy. Bad stuff that’s happened to SP these last years. The kind of “fan” that you are and the departure of Jimmy. How ironic.

i really don’t understand what you are saying here completely, but you really, really need to come off of it. you have me completely misunderstood, you have no understanding and a total disrespect for my own history as an SP fan (and i don’t find it necessary to explain it to you anymore).. but get over it. don’t read me. simple as that. leave me alone. you infatuation with me is really starting to freak me out a bit.

299. Bigpumpkins(Gaweful for Adam) - 12:29 am // Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Good, at least I succeed in that.

300. Adam - 12:45 am // Tuesday, April 20, 2010

so what do you want to get out of this, big pumpkins? what do you want from me?

301. Adam - 12:48 am // Tuesday, April 20, 2010

and you know, for someone accusing me of being so filled with hate, you seem to be filling yourself up with just as much if not more hate.

302. Bigpumpkins(Gaweful for Adam) - 9:05 am // Tuesday, April 20, 2010

I really don’t think so.
Anyway…if you don’t agree, nothing can come out of it. Ok.
