trackback

Short and shorthanded podcast this week, as we devoted most of our time to the recently-emerged details on the Songs for a Sailor EP, with a bit of time devote to random news bits from the past few weeks since the last podcast.

Listen to the whole show (43:42)

(download)(iTunes)

This week’s topics:

Panelists
-Chris, Jill, and Andrew

-Fans who pre-order Songs for a Sailor from indie record stores get a special bonus.  We discover that all three of us are afraid of independent record stores and make many more obelisk jokes.  (20:42)

-The EP will cost a fairly hefty $30.  Is it worth the decreased sales for Billy to be able to release what he wants artistically? (10:15)

-Random topics from the past few weeks, and Jill talks about Billy’s relationship with photographer Art Shay. (7:43)

Song of the Week
-7 Shades of Black, Asheville, NC June 26, 2007

We still haven’t resolved the issue of the podcast entry in the iTunes store, so if you want to subscribe to the podcast in iTunes, go to Advanced…, Subscribe to Podcast, and then use the following URL: http://hipstersunited.com/blog/podcast/rss.xml. I apologize for the confusion.

Really interesting points on the tbk release and promotion. I would have liked to get them eventually but I cannot do so right now. I think that is my only complaint, that it is limited and won’t be available in the future.

When did Billy spend all of this time at the art institute researching, was it for tbk? Kristin Burns may be young but she simply does not have the same quality or style to ever take those kind of photographs, she is much more of a modern and commercial photographer. By the way, Billy met Art Shay through Florence (Art’s wife). She owns and operates a rare books store in Highland Park that Billy frequents.

bill’s always gone in the direction he wanted to artistically.

3. purple pumpkin - 9:47 pm // Tuesday, March 30, 2010

I postponed ordering the EP from amazon so I could find a record shop but I’m wondering how fast 10,000 copies could be sold (?) If anyone has any insight that it will sell out quick I’ll probably just order it this week but I’d prefer to wait and get the poster. Decisions decisions.

@ purple pumpkin, well all things considered, if Zeitgeist sold 142,000+ copies in one week, albeit through a much more mainstream medium, I’d say it’s safe to say that 5000 would go fairly quickly.

And, thanks for that podcast subscription link!

You could always order on Amazon and cancel it if you need to. Amazon has the added bonus of giving you the lowest price if they lower it after you pre-order. They had it for $23.99 for awhile but since raised it back to $26.99.

I honestly don’t think they’re making 10000 copies of the EP in the first run. They’ll probably make 2000-3000 and will press more if they need to. 10000 copies is an awful lot to be stuck with if it turns out that they overestimated what people are willing to pay for an EP. Either way I don’t think you’ll have a hard time tracking one down.

Great podcast, but I just want to add that, for example, my decision to not buy this ep is all about the quality of the product, not in the price in itself..
(I found the songs terrible but it’s my personal opinion/taste)
that’s why I wouldn’t pay for those, and I know many other “troo” fan that think that way

if the next ep would have songs like 99 floors, as rome burns, tom tom and gossamer, I would obiouvsly buy it..

7. to arpeggi - 1:54 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

agree with you. there’s a possibility that one of those tracks will be a b-side to ep 1 but it doesn’t matter. in any case this time i won’t buy it, but I’ll download LOSSLESS. that’s not a crime. if it is, then okay, arrest me, internet officers.

8. alex - 5:26 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

I didn’t particularly like SFAS or WWMM, thought Stitch was ok, but I ordered the EP anyway. I’ve been a fan for too long to jump ship now. And I’m just crazy enough to hope that as we get further into the project the music will improve. I’d hate to be stuck with an imcomplete set in 4 or 5 years.

“When did Billy spend all of this time at the art institute researching, was it for tbk?”

LOL hope he was able to avoid the ex.

9. chaja - 5:48 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

I Liked ‘A Song for a Son’ and ‘A Stitch in Time’. But Widow and Astral are the reason of many more other reasons, why it would be stupid to buy the EP.

now Im listening to pre-Gish SP songs.. ‘There it Goes’. an amazing, dreamy, mystical, 80s sound…

10. to alex - 5:50 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

5-6 years? and I thought that TbK will be released in 2-3 years.

11. alex - 7:14 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

“5-6 years? and I thought that TbK will be released in 2-3 years.”

LOL yeah ok

12. Bigpumpkins - 9:43 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Oh yeah I’m much into “Mashed potatoes” lately and I do see the relation to TBK up to now. It seems to me Billy is doing the Pre-Gish feel once again, finally. With the new settings of course.

13. MonteLDS - 9:45 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

so the show will be at 4pm so i can’t seeing the show being too long

14. gyang333 - 10:14 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Thanks chaja for sharing that, I never really paid attention to Mashed Potatoes, but this is awesome.

15. pinkmnm - 10:35 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

I LOVE mashed potatoes! They are best with a little butter on top :)

16. Bigpumpkins - 11:18 pm // Wednesday, March 31, 2010

With sour cream!

17. purple pumpkin - 12:32 am // Thursday, April 1, 2010

Y queso!

Nice vid btw! Pre-Gish material has some of their best songs. Listened to Why Am I So Tired today for maybe the 2nd time in my life, totally underrated!

18. chaja - 6:52 am // Thursday, April 1, 2010

gyang333 , no problem mate :).

19. Aaron - 5:46 am // Saturday, April 3, 2010

Why you gotta make fun of the obelisk aura, man? I’m totally feelin’ it!

20. 34 - 6:58 pm // Monday, April 19, 2010

Way late, I know, but Jill? Target was TOTALLY around when we were kids. I used to get Commodore 64 games there, which means it was pre-middle school, when I got my Amiga 2000. :P”
