Billy Corgan, Kerry Brown, and Mark Tulin have formed another one-off band to perform in Los Angeles under less-than-joyous circumstances.  A press release says the three will play under the name “Backwards Clock Society” at an event to benefit Laura Ann Masura, the operator (ca. 1993) of the short-lived Smashing Pumpkins Fan Club, who suffered a severe leg injury in a motorcycle crash last month.

The benefit concert will be held at Echoplex on Sunday, November 8.  The Backwards Clock Society headlines and will be joined by the Happy Stars, the Pulsars, Tim Rutili, Pity Party, and Light FM.  Showtime is an early 5pm; tickets are twelve dollars and can be purchased through TicketWeb.

Also to support Masura, Corgan will be auctioning a bass guitar he used very early in the Pumpkins’ career as well as the drum kit played by Jimmy Chamberlin during the recording of Gish (currently owned by Masura herself).  These will apparently be the first items to be offered through the eBay “memorabilia division” for which plans were announced in April.  An eBay seller page for the band has appeared under “officialspmemorabilia”, but no items are yet listed.

UPDATE: SmashingPumpkins.com has pictures of Billy and Jimmy signing the bass and drums; the auction is to begin tomorrow.

(6:43 PM) chris: so will the Backwards Clock Society be covering Spirits in the Sky songs?
(6:43 PM) jjb: oh, here we go.
(6:44 PM) jjb: what? is this post a setup to start comparing them to Spirits in the Sky?!
(6:44 PM) jjb: WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS POST

I’m starting to think all these projects were those Billy mentionned when he said he had 3-4 bands he’d play with in mind…?

Or maybe this one was totally unplanned…

(6:48 PM) jjb: i suppose anthony kiedis will be singing
(6:48 PM) chris: haha, he’ll also be the one who convinces them to play all the good covers
(6:48 PM) jjb: lol

The occasion is sad, but glad they’re helping her out with the benefit. Very sweet. Jason, you and Chris raise some (questionably) interesting points which threaten to make my brain explode.

The ticket says Backward Clock Society but the press release says Backwards Clock Society. I sense a new “The Smashing Pumpkins” vs. “Smashing Pumpkins” type debate in the works. Anyway, I’m looking forward to the BBQ if nothing else. Can’t beat $12.00

Should at least be able to get a good ribeye

8. chris - 5:58 pm // Tuesday, October 20, 2009

@gauphil: I think that remains to be seen. Personally I think it would be really funny if every time he played with Kerry and Mark the band had a totally different name. Kind of an FU to the people who fixate on Billy’s use of the name “Smashing Pumpkins”.

@chris

True. Well said!

I’m still curious about that “multiple bands” thing of him.

Damn that’s some cool new info! I wonder what they’ll play? Hmm…

Yes, I agree with you. I hope she is okay and recovers soon.

So, she is a childhood friend of James and encouraged to be a drummer by Jimmy… I’m just wondering if James and Jimmy also are asked to join this benefit show…

Cool! Wonder if those pics were taken in Billy’s house? There is some sort of animal (cat?) cage in the background.

So is this eBay memorabilia thing another one of the projects that Billy has followed through on?

Ah well this letter from Jimmy answers my question. He just signed it recently. I suppose this could mean Billy and him are in correct term, which would be great news I think!

Usually not the kind of things I think about but I would be curious to see Billy without his hat these days. I wonder if he may grow hair and play with it love live despite the fact that he probably doesn’t have that much hair left.

For some reason I think it would fit with the atmosphere of the “new” SP if he assumed his baldness in public. Anyone with me on this one? Just speculating of course.

27. lol - 7:07 pm // Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Geez, $3049 Billy vs $1315 Jimmy. These bidders do not know sniping.
